(NARRATOR)>> TODAY ON DETROIT MUSCLE, IT'S TIME TO GRAB THE SAND PAPER AND GET TO SCRATCHING. PROJECT HARD CHARGER IS READY FOR BODY WORK.
(TOMMY)>> HEY GUYS, WELCOME TO DETROIT MUSCLE. TODAY'S A PRETTY SPECIAL DAY FOR US. WE FINALLY GET TO DO SOME BODY WORK ON THIS '69 CHARGER THAT WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON FOR A LONG TIME. IT'S GONNA BE A WHOLE LOT OF WORK, BUT IT'S GONNA BE WORTH IT IN THE END.
(MARC)>> YEAH AND A BIG JOB LIKE THIS NORMALLY TAKES DAYS OR WEEKS, EVEN MONTHS TO ACCOMPLISH JUST BECAUSE THE AMOUNT OF MAN HOURS IT TAKES, AND ONE WAY TO SPEED THAT UP IS TO BRING IN EXTRA HELP. FOR EXAMPLE, WE'VE GOT SPIKE HERE FROM SPIKE'S PERFORMANCE AND REFINISHING, AND HE'S GONNA BE GIVING US A HAND TODAY.
(TOMMY)>> NOW HE'S NOT THE ONLY ONE, BUT HE'S THE FIRST ONE THAT SHOWED UP, BUT IT'S TIME TO GET STARTED. WHEN WE PICKED UP THIS CHARGER IT WAS A FAIRLY ROUGH RUNNING AND DRIVING CAR, BUT AFTER A WHOLE LOT OF FIXING SHE'S READY FOR SOME BODY WORK.
(MARC)>> WELL THE FIRST THING THAT I'M GONNA GET STARTED ON IS I'M GONNA WORK ON THESE FRONT FENDERS AND HOOD. YOU CAN SEE THEY'VE STILL GOT THAT FACTORY ECOAT ON THEM CAUSE THESE WERE BRAND NEW. WHAT WE NEED TO DO IS WE NEED TO PUT SOME 120 ON A D/A ON THERE JUST TO GIVE IT A ONCE OVER TO IMPROVE THE MECHANICAL ADHESION. WHAT THAT MEANS IS THAT'S GONNA GIVE THIS THING SOME TEXTURE. SO WHATEVER WE GO WITH NEXT, WHETHER IT BE PRIMER OR FILLER, IT'LL GIVE IT SOMETHING GOOD TO STICK TO. [ d/a spinning ]
(MARC)>> NOW THIS THING DOES ITS WORK PRETTY QUICKLY. SO WE NEED TO KEEP IT MOVING AND NOT SPIN VERY MUCH TIME IN ANY ONE SPOT. WE'RE JUST ROUGHING IT UP, NOT GOING DOWN TO BARE METAL. [ d/a spinning ]
(MARC)>> SEE HERE'S SOME TAPE OR GLUE FROM THE PACKING MATERIAL THIS HOOD WAS PACKED IN. WE NEED TO GET THAT OFF BEFORE WE SAND. SO I'VE JUST GOT SOME LACQUER THINNER HERE ON A RAG. I'M GONNA WIPE IT OFF FIRST, AND THEN I'M GONNA DRY IT WITH A DRY ONE.
WITH THAT DONE I CAN FINISH ROUGHING UP THESE NEW PANELS.
(TOMMY)>> WHENEVER WE GOT OUR DOORS BACK FROM THE BLASTER WE NOTICED THAT ONE OF THEM HAD BEEN INVOLVED IN A FENDER BENDER AT SOME POINT, AND THE REPAIR THAT WAS MADE ISN'T UP TO OUR STANDARDS. IT'S GOT SOME HOLES IN IT THAT ARE EVIDENCE OF THAT OLD SCREW TYPE DENT PULLER, AND THAT'S NOT WHAT WE'RE GONNA USE TO MAKE OUR REPAIR. WHAT WE'VE GOT IS A STUD TYPE WHERE IT TAKES ONE OF THESE LITTLE THINGS AND WELDS IT TO THE PANEL. THEN YOU USE THE LITTLE SLIDE HAMMER TO SNATCH IT BACK OUT. NOW I'M GONNA LET SPIKE DO THE DUTY IF YOU WILL AND I'M GONNA GET BUSY DOING SOMETHING ELSE. SPIKE'S GONNA START BY GRINDING OFF SOME OF THE PRIMER. HE RUNS SPIKE'S REFINISHING IN OCALA, FLORIDA, AND COMES HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
(SPIKE)>> IN MY BUSINESS I DO A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING. I SPECIALIZE MORE IN PAINTING AND DOING SOME BODY WORK. AFTER WE GOT THIS PROCESS DOWN, GRINDING, NOW WE'RE GONNA USE THE STUDS SO WE CAN REMOVE THE DENT.
(MARC)>> USING A STUD GUN LIKE THIS ONE INSTEAD OF THE OLD STYLE SCREW IN SLIDE HAMMER SAVES A LOT OF WORK BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO BACK AND ADDRESS A BUNCH OF HOLES.
WITH THE STUDS ATTACHED, SPIKE CAN GO BACK AND PULL OUT THIS LONG, NARROW DENT WITH THE SPECIAL SLIDE HAMMER.
THE STUDS CAN BE CUT OFF, AND AFTER THAT THE REMAINS CAN BE GROUND DOWN FLUSH. [ grinding metal ] [ welder cracking ]
(TOMMY)>> THERE ARE A COUPLE OF HOLES TO WELD UP FROM A PREVIOUS REPAIR, WHICH ALSO NEED TO BE GROUND DOWN. THEN SPIKE IS GONNA GRAB A D/A SANDER TO PREP THE AREA FOR FILLER. [ d/a spinning ]
(TOMMY)>> THESE CARS HAVE A PRONOUNCED BODY LINE IN THE FROM OF A SIMULATED SCOOP ON THE DOOR, WHICH IS A HALLMARK OF THESE SECOND GEN CHARGERS. IT'S A REAL CHALLENGE TO REPAIR DOORS ON THESE CARS CAUSE YOU HAVE TO FIX THE PROBLEM AREA, WHICH IS THE DENT ITSELF, BUT YOU'VE ALSO GOT TO DO IT WITHOUT ALTERING THE SHAPE OF THE BODY LINES.
(MARC)>> WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? LOTS OF QUALITY TIME WITH FILLER AND A LONG BOARD, AND MAYBE A SANDER AS WELL. SPIKE IS USING GUIDE COAT TO HELP IDENTIFY HIGH AND LOW SPOTS ON THE PANEL.
(SPIKE)>> MAN WE'VE STILL GOT SOME MORE WORK TO DO, BUT IT'S GONNA LOOK GREAT.
(TOMMY)>> WELL WE'RE READY TO START FILLING THIS FACTORY JOINT WHERE THE ROOF AND THE QUARTER PANEL MEET UP. WHAT I'M GONNA BE USING ISN'T JUST A STANDARD RUN OF THE MILL TYPE FILLER. IT'S ACTUALLY AN ALUMINUM REINFORCED FILLER, AND IT HAS A COUPLE OF BENEFITS TO IT. ONE OF THEM, IT'S A LOT STRONGER THAN THAT STANDARD STUFF. PLUS IT'S WATERPROOF, AND WITH IT BEING REALLY CLOSE TO THIS DRIP RAIL, THAT'S A BIG BENEFIT. ONE THING TO KEEP IN MIND WHENEVER YOU'RE MIXING YOUR FILLER IS TO MAKE SURE TO USE IT ON A SURFACE THAT ISN'T GONNA WICK YOUR FILLERS OR YOUR HARDENER. NOW A LOT OF TIMES I'VE SEEN GUYS USE SOMETHING LIKE CARDBOARD, AND REALLY AND TRUTHFULLY THAT'S JUST PRACTICING TO SCREW UP.
SOMETHING LIKE THIS, IT'S A GOOD IDEA TO KINDA SMUSH IT INTO THAT CRACK OR THAT CREVICE.
NOW IF YOUR FILLER STARTS TO HARDEN UP DON'T TRY TO PUT IT ON THE PANEL. GO AHEAD AND THROW IT AWAY BECAUSE OTHERWISE YOU'LL BE RUNNING INTO PIN HOLE PROBLEMS, OR ADHESION, AND THAT KIND OF THING. NOW THIS STUFF CURES JUST LIKE ANY OF THE OTHER FILLER AND SANDS LIKE IT AS WELL. WE'RE GONNA LET IT DO ITS THING, AND COME BACK, AND SAND IT DOWN A LITTLE LATER.
(NARRATOR)>> COMING UP WE'LL GET SOME PRIMER ON THE CAR. THEN GET A FEW TRICKS FROM THE PROS.
(MARC)>> SO NOW BEGINS THE MOST BELOVED STAGE OF ANY BUILD. ALL THAT SANDING AND FILLER, SPREADING THAT EVERYBODY LOVES TO DO SO MUCH. THE BIG PLAN RIGHT NOW IS TO ROUGH IN THE SHAPE OF THE PANELS IN PREPARATION FOR THE CAR'S FIRST COAT OF FILLER PRIMER.
(TOMMY)>> WE'VE STILL GOT HELP FROM SPIKE, AND LUCKILY FOR US WE'VE HAD SOME MORE SHOW UP, IN THE FORM OF OUR OLD BUDDY KIWI. HEY GUYS, GLAD YOU MADE YOUR WAY BACK. WELL WE'VE GOT OUR CHARGER ALL SHAPED UP AND WE'RE PRETTY MUCH READY TO START SPRAYING ON SOME PRIMER. WE'VE GOT A LITTLE BIT OF TAPING TO DO, BUT THAT'S NO BIG THING. NOW WHAT WE'RE GONNA BE SPRAYING ON IS THIS SUPER HIGH BUILD POLYESTER PRIMER, AND THIS STUFF GOES ON JUST LIKE ANY OTHER TYPE OF PRIMER, BUT IT'S A WHOLE LOT THICKER. NO YOU ALSO MAY NOTICE WE GOT AN EXTRA GUY HERE. THIS IS KIWI. HE'S HELPED US OUT ON THE SHOW BEFORE, AND HE SCREWED UP AND ANSWERED THE PHONE WHENEVER I GAVE HIM A CALL.
(MARC)>> AND BOY ARE WE GLAD HE DID PICK THE PHONE UP BECAUSE WE'VE GOT A LOT OF WORK AHEAD OF US.
(KIWI)>> TOMMY BOSHERS WAS ON THE OTHER END, AND HE SAID, YOU WANT TO COME AND HELP OUT FOR A FEW DAYS? SO I SAID SURE! TOM'S ALWAYS FUN TO BE AROUND. WHEN I FIRST MET HIM IT WAS A LITTLE BIT LIKE BEING IN AN EPISODE OF GREEN ACRES, BUT YOU KNOW, OTHER THAN THAT, ONCE WE GOT PAST THAT IT WAS ALL GOOD.
(TOMMY)>> KIWI RUNS KIWI CLASSICS AND CUSTOMS IN FRANKLIN, TENNESSEE. WE KNOW HE DOES GOOD WORK. HE'S HELPED US BEFORE. SPEAKING OF WHICH, ANOTHER GOOD FRIEND, RICHARD WOOD, CAME TO LEND A HAND TOO.
(RICHARD)>> YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU'RE SPRAYING PRIMER AND YOU ALWAYS WANT TO KEEP A WET EDGE, AND YOU GIVE IT SOME FLASH TIME, BUT THEY WERE WHAT I CALL DOUBLE GUNNING IT. ONE ON EACH SIDE, AND WHEN THEY'RE USING THE POLYESTER, AS SOON AS YOU OPEN IT UP IT STARTS TO SKIM OVER ON THE TOP. SO IT HELPS, I HAD ONE IN EACH HAND KEEPING THEM GOING TO KEEP THEM STIRRED UP. AS SOON AS YOU QUITE STIRRING IT, IT STARTS TO TRY TO SKIM OVER. SO IF YOU REALLY DON'T HAVE THAT GOING ON THEY'LL HAVE TO GET OUT OF THE BOOTH, GET BACK IN THE BOOTH. SO IT HELPS TREMENDOUSLY FOR THEM JUST TO KIND OF POP THE CUP OUT. I'D FILL IT UP, AND THEN JUST KEEP ON SPRAYING.
(KIWI)>> IT'S LOOKING GOOD! WE'VE GOT A GOOD LAYER OF THE HIGH BUILD PRIMER ON THERE. WE'VE GOT TO LET IT CURE FOR OVERNIGHT, AND THEN START BLOCK SANDING.
(SPIKE)>> IT WAS A BIG CHALLENGE, BUT I THINK WE DID PRETTY GOOD.
(MARC)>> WELL IT'S THE NEXT DAY AND OUR PRIMER'S HAD TIME TO CURE. WE WENT AHEAD AND LET KIWI AND SPIKE TAKE A BREAK, BUT WE KEPT RICHARD ON, AND HE'S GONNA GIVE US A HAND BLOCKING THE CAR. NOW I'M NOT REALLY SURE HOW TO DO THIS. IT'S A LITTLE OUT OF MY WHEEL HOUSE, BUT HE'S GONNA GIVE ME A FEW TIPS. ALL RIGHT RICHARD, I'VE GOT MY BLOCK HERE, READY TO START BLOCKING RIGHT?
(RICHARD)>> OKAY, THANK YOU! I'LL TAKE THAT FROM YOU.
(MARC)>> ALL RIGHT, SO WHAT DO WE DO?
(RICHARD)>> FIRST THING WE'RE GONNA DO IS, SPIKE DID A REALLY GOOD JOB OF STRAIGHTENING THESE PANELS OUT. WE DON'T WANT TO, FIRST ONE WE DON'T WANT TO MESS UP WHAT HE'S ALREADY DONE. SO WE PUT A LINE OUT HERE TO SAVE THE BODY LINE THAT HE'S ALREADY CREATED FOR US, AND WE TAKE SOME GUIDE COAT. I LIKE USING POWDER GUIDE COAT. NOT LIKE SPRAY CAN GUIDE COAT AND STUFF BECAUSE WHEN YOU SPRAY CAN IT GOES, KINDA ZEBRAS IT A LITTLE BIT. I'M JUST GONNA SMEAR IT ON.
IF YOU SEE LITTLE LINES LIKE THIS YOU WANT TO STAY AWAY FROM THESE CAUSE SPIKE TOOK A LOT OF TIME TO PUT THESE LITTLE. SO YOU DEFINITELY DON'T WANT TO DIG IN WITH A SANDING BLOCK, BUT I DON'T WANT TO REALLY PINCH IT BECAUSE IF YOU PINCH IT YOU DIG IN.
SO SAND DOWN TO THE LINE, AND WHAT THAT TAPE'S DOING IS SAVING WHAT HE HAS DONE.
YOU CAN SAND UP. SO WHAT THE GUIDE COAT DOES IS KIND OF SHOWS YOU THE HIGH SPOTS AND LOW SPOTS. SO WE'LL CONTINUE TO SAND THIS UNTIL WE EITHER HIT A GOOD SUBSTRAIGHT, WHICH HOPEFULLY WE WON'T HIT BARE METAL BUT WE MAY. AND WE JUST STOP SANDING AND GO FROM THERE.
(MARC)>> SO MY 36 IS NO GOOD?
(RICHARD)>> NO SIR, THAT'S A LITTLE AGGRESSIVE.
(MARC)>> WHENEVER YOU'RE BUILDING A CUSTOM CAR, OR UPGRADING YOUR RIDE, OR EVEN DOING A RESTORATION, THERE'S LOTS OF DIFFERENT OPTIONS FOR FASTENERS. NOW A LOT OF TIMES YOU PICK UP THE BOLTS THAT YOU USE BEFORE OR YOU MAY WANT TO UPGRADE TO SOMETHING THAT'S STRONGER OR BETTER LOOKING. NOW THERE'S SEVERAL DIFFERENT TYPES OF BOLTS, AND THEY DO DIFFERENT JOBS, AND TODAY WE'RE GONNA TALK ABOUT A FEW. WELL HERE WE'VE GOT THREE VERY SIMILAR LOOKING BOLTS BUT THEY ARE ALL DIFFERENT. THIS IS YOUR STANDARD BOLT HERE. THIS IS ZINC PLATED, AND YOU CAN TELL BY THE THREE TICKS HERE THAT THIS IS A GRADE FIVE, BUT WE'RE GONNA TALK ABOUT GRADING LATER. YOU CAN UPGRADE TO A CADMIUM PLATED BOLT LIKE THIS, WHICH IS A GRADE EIGHT, OR YOU CAN STEP UP A LITTLE BIT MORE TO THIS STAINLESS STEEL BOLT, WHICH IS RESISTANT TO CORROSION, AND YOU CAN EVEN POLISH IT UP IF YOU'D LIKE. THESE HERE ARE SOCKET CAP BOLTS, WHICH TAKES A HEX KEY TO DRIVE THEM, AND IF YOU NOTICE THE HEAD IS SMALLER FOR THE SIZE OF THE BOLT, WHICH MEANS YOU CAN GET THESE INTO A TIGHTER SPOT. SAY IF YOU'RE WORKING ON AN ACCESSORY DRIVE FOR AN ENGINE. NOW THESE COME IN DIFFERENT FINISHES, OR COARSE THREAD AND FINE THREAD, AND THIS ONE IS ACTUALLY CHROME PLATED. THESE ARE CALLED BUTTON HEAD BOLTS, AND THEY COME IN DIFFERENT FINISHES AND FINE AND COARSE THREAD AS WELL. THESE ARE FOR AREAS WHERE YOU DON'T WANT THE HEAD OF THE BOLT TO GET CAUGHT ON THINGS, AND THESE ARE ALSO DRIVEN BY A HEX KEY. NOW IF A BUTTON HEAD'S NOT LOW PROFILE ENOUGH YOU CAN GO WITH A COUNTER SUNK BOLT LIKE THIS ONE. YOU JUST HAVE TO TAPER THE HOLE, AND THEN THIS WILL MOUNT FLUSH WITH THE TOP OF WHATEVER YOU'RE BOLTING IT TO. THIS TAKES A HEX KEY TO DRIVE AS WELL, AND THESE ARE ALSO AVAILABLE IN DIFFERENT SIZES AND THREAD PITCH. THIS IS AN ARP BOLT. IT'S KIND OF UNIQUE IN THAT IT HAS A 12 POINT HEAD HERE. SO YOU HAVE TO USE A 12 POINT SOCKET TO DRIVE IT, BUT THESE ARE SUPER STRONG. THIS IS ACTUALLY A STAINLESS VERSION, AND BECAUSE THE HEAD IS SO SMALL YOU CAN USE IT WHERE YOU WOULD NORMALLY USE A SOCKET HEAD BOLT, LIKE WHEN YOU'RE INSTALLING ACCESSORIES ON AN ENGINE. AS A MATTER OF FACT ARP MAKES ENTIRE KITS TO DO SUCH A THING. ANOTHER UNIQUE TYPE OF BOLT IS METRIC. NOW A LOT OF VEHICLES, EVEN DOMESTIC VEHICLES BUILT FROM THE MID '80'S AND NEWER, REQUIRE A METRIC BOLT. SO IF YOU'VE GOT THREADS THAT ARE TAPPED INTO THE VEHICLE YOU'RE GONNA NEED TO USE THESE. NOW YOU CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A STANDARD AND A METRIC BY WHAT'S STAMPED ON THE HEAD. THIS IS A STANDARD BOLT HERE, AND YOU CAN TELL IT'S STANDARD BECAUSE IT HAS THE LINES, WHICH INDICATES THE GRADE. WHERE AS THE METRIC HAS A NUMBER, WHICH INDICATES THE GRADE. WELL THIS IS CERTAINLY NOT ALL OF THE TYPES OF BOLTS THAT ARE OUT THERE BUT THIS IS A PRETTY GOOD SELECTION OF WHAT YOU'LL SEE FOR AUTOMOTIVE APPLICATIONS. NOW EARLIER I MENTIONED BOLT GRADING, BUT THERE'S MORE TO IT THAN THAT. SO NEXT TIME I'M GONNA TALK ABOUT BOLT GRADING, HOW TO MEASURE A BOLT BOTH FOR LENGTH AND DIAMETER, AND ALSO HOW TO MEASURE THREAD PITCH.
(NARRATOR)>> NEXT RICHARD SHOWS US HOW TO FINISH THAT BODY LINE.
(MARC)>> HEY EVERYBODY, WELCOME BACK. WELL RICHARD GOT THE TOP OF OUR DOOR BLOCKED HERE ABOVE THAT BODY LINE. RICHARD, WHAT'S NEXT?
(RICHARD)>> WELL NOW THAT WE SANDED DOWN TO THE TAPE, WE ACTUALLY PUT SOME MORE TAPE ON HERE, AND WE'RE GONNA SAND UP TO THE TAPE, AND THE REASON BEING. SPIKE DID A REALLY GOOD JOB AT BODY WORK, AND HAD THE LINES REALLY STRAIGHT, BUT WHEN YOU BLOCK IT SOMETIMES YOU CAN THEM DO THIS. WELL WHEN YOU BLOCK DOWN TO THE TAPE IT MAKES IT STRAIGHT AS AN ARROW. SO WE'RE GONNA PUT THE TAPE AND BLOCK UP TO IT, AND IT MAKES IT SUPER, SUPER STRAIGHT, REALLY CRISP LINES. SO WHEN YOU LOOK DOWN THE CAR YOU'VE GOT A PERFECTLY STRAIGHT BODY LINES.
(MARC)>> COOL, LET'S DO IT!
(RICHARD)>> LET'S DO IT. IT'S GONNA TOUCH IT, TOUCH IT, TOUCH IT, TOUCH IT, AND THEN YOU START PADDING IT, AND THEN YOU CAN KIND OF RUB IT. YOU JUST START RUBBING TAPE IT'LL MAKE IT MOVE ON YOU. SO THAT'S WHY YOU KIND OF PAD IT FIRST. THEN YOU LOOK DOWN AT IT STRAIGHT, STRAIGHT, STRAIGHT.
(MARC)>> WITH THE OLD TAPE REMOVED, SOME GUIDE COAT CAN BE APPLIED.
(RICHARD)>> WE SEE A LITTLE SPOT HERE.
LOOK FOR THE, OBVIOUSLY THE DARK SPOTS, AND JUST SAND UNTIL THEY'RE GONE. IT ONLY TAKES ABOUT AN HOUR.
(MARC)>> THAT'S TIME FOR ME TO GO TO LUNCH THEN.
(RICHARD)>> BODY WORK IS AN ART, AND EITHER YOU HAVE IT OR YOU DON'T. SO I WOULD SAY IT'S NOT FOR EVERYBODY. YOU CAN TRY ALL DAY LONG BUT IT'S TOUGH STUFF.
(MARC)>> RICHARD OWNS RICHARD WOOD CUSTOMS IN AUSTIN, TEXAS. WE'VE WORKED WITH HIM ON A COUPLE OF PROJECTS, INCLUDING A FIRST GEN MUSTANG SEMA BUILD. HE'S THE RIGHT MAN FOR THE JOB TO HELP GET THIS CHARGER STRAIGHTENED UP.
(RICHARD)>> JUST GOT DONE SANDING UP TO THIS LINE, AND AS YOU'LL NOTICE, AS I PULL THIS YOU'LL SEE THIS LITTLE BLACK LINE. THAT'S WHAT'S LEFT. THAT SHOWS THE ACTUAL STYLE LINE. SO WHEN WE GET DONE PULLING THIS WE'LL COME BACK WITH THE SAND PAPER AND WE'LL SOFTEN THIS LINE. THEN YOU KINDA JUST...
...AND AS YOU CAN SEE, THAT SOFTENS THE LINE JUST ENOUGH TO WHERE IT'S NOT TOO SHARP. YOU'RE JUST GONNA CHASE IT ALL THE WAY BACK.
THERE YOU GO!
(MARC)>> YOU'VE SEEN US USE ETHREE SPARK PLUGS ON OUR PROJECT VEHICLES HERE IN THE SHOP BUT NOW ETHREE IS OFFERING EVERYTHING ELSE YOU NEED TO GET YOUR ADDITION STARTED. THEY OFFER SPARK PLUG WIRES, WHICH ARE CUT TO FIT, ALONG WITH A BUNCH OF PRODUCTS FROM THEIR ALL NEW DIAMOND FIRE IGNITION LINE, LIKE AN ASSORTMENT OF COILS, A TWO STEP, TACH ADAPTER, A CDI IGNITION BOX, AND OF COURSE, DISTRIBUTORS. TO SEE WHAT THEY OFFER FOR YOUR RIDE GO TO ETHREE SPARK PLUGS DOT COM.
(NARRATOR)>> STILL AHEAD, INSTALLING THE COBRA'S ENGINE!
(MARC)>> NOW IF Y'ALL KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ME, YOU KNOW HOW MUCH BODY WORK IS NOT MY THING. SO I DECIDED INSTEAD OF WALKING OUT THE DOOR I'D COME OVER HERE AND PUT IN A LITTLE WORK ON OUR FOX BODY MUSTANG, CALM MY NERVES A BIT. SO I'VE DECIDED I'M GONNA MATE THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION TOGETHER. I THINK I'VE GOT EVERYTHING HERE TO DO IT, AND I'M GONNA START WITH THIS RELEASE BEARING. WE NEED TO ATTACH THAT RELEASE BEARING TO OUR CLUTCH FORK, AND ONCE IT'S SNAPPED IN SLIDE THE FORK ONTO THE PIVOT SHAFT. NOW BEFORE WE CAN START INSTALLING THOSE CLUTCH PARTS WE NEED TO GET THE MOTOR PLATE INSTALLED. THIS ONE UP FRONT HERE IS THE ONE THAT CAME OFF OF OUR MUSTANG. THE ONE BEHIND IT, THE GOLDISH COLOR ONE, IS THE ONE WE GOT FROM AMERICAN POWERTRAIN. NOW THE BOLT HOLES ON THE BELL HOUSING ARE THE SAME, BUT RIGHT HERE WHERE THE STARTER GOES YOU CAN SEE THE HOLES DON'T ACTUALLY LINE UP. IT MUST BE SOMETHING DIFFERENT BETWEEN AUTOMATICS AND MANUALS. EITHER WAY WE'VE GOT TO USE THIS BOTTOM ONE. THIS THING JUST SLIDES UP AGAINST THE BLOCK AND WE'LL PUT A BOLT IN IT JUST TO HOLD IT FOR NOW. NEXT WE'LL KNOCK IN OUR PILOT BEARING, AND THEN GRAB OUR ARP FLYWHEEL BOLTS, WHICH NEED SOME ASSEMBLY LUBE ON THE BOTTOM SIDE OF THE HEAD AS WELL AS SOME PERMATEX THREAD LOCKER ON THE THREADS. THE FLYWHEEL IS READY TO GO ON. WE'LL SLIP IT INTO PLACE, AND INSTALL THOSE ARP BOLTS, RUN THEM DOWN TIGHT, AND GET THEM TORQUED TO 85 FOOT POUNDS.
A BLAST OF CRC BRAKE PARTS CLEANER WILL GET ALL THE GREASE AND GRIME OFF THE FLYWHEEL. YOU DON'T WANT THAT STUFF TO GET ON YOUR CLUTCH DISC, WHICH IS THE NEXT THING WE'RE GONNA INSTALL, ALONG WITH THE ALIGNMENT TOOL.
THE PRESSURE PLATE IS NEXT, WHICH WE'LL GET ATTACHED WITH THE BOLTS THAT CAME WITH OUR KIT FROM AMERICAN POWERTRAIN. THOSE GET TORQUED TO 24 FOOT POUNDS. NOW IT'S TIME FOR THE WEDDING CEREMONY. WE'LL GET OUR ENGINE IN PLACE AND MARRY IT TO THE TRANSMISSION. THESE ARP BOLTS WILL KEEP THESE TWO MATED FOR LIFE. FOR THE INSTALL WE RECRUITED JEREMY FROM TRUCK TECH. TELL ME HOW I'M LOOKING BACK THERE.
(JEREMY)>> YEAH, COME ON BACK WITH IT. ALL RIGHT, YOU CAN START EASING DOWN NOW.
ALL RIGHT, YOU'RE GOOD BACK HERE.
I'M HAVING TO HOLD IT DOWN. YEAH, WE'RE LOOK GOOD BACK HERE.
(MARC)>> I KNOW, ME TOO MAN.
WE'LL GRAB A JACK TO HELP RAISE THE TRANSMISSION. AFTER A LITTLE WIGGLING, THE MOUNTS FALL INTO PLACE. OKAY, PASSENGER SIDE'S IN.
(JEREMY)>> THERE WE GO!
(MARC)>> FITS!
(JEREMY)>> MONEY, THAT'S IT MAN!
(MARC)>> PUT A CROSS MEMBER IN IT AND FIRE IT UP.
(JEREMY)>> RIGHT ON, I'M OUT!
(MARC)>> APPRECIATE IT!
(JEREMY)>> YEAH MAN.
(MARC)>> IF YOU'RE A CSIX CORVETTE OWNER, THEN YOU ALREADY KNOW THAT GM DID A GREAT JOB BUILDING A GREAT MACHINE, BUT MAGNAFLOW HAS A CAT BACK KIT THAT CAN HELP YOU TAKE IT EVEN FURTHER.
