(MIKE)>> WELCOME TO ENGINE POWER. TODAY WE'RE STARTING A BUILD THAT'S GONNA TAKE A FEW SHOWS TO GET FINISHED. NOW THIS ENGINE IS A FAMILIAR POWER HOUSE WE NAMED LITTLE BLACK AND BLUE. AND EVEN THOUGH YOU CAN'T HEAR, IT'S BEGGING TO GET BETWEEN THE FRAME RAILS OF A DESERVING RIDE.

(PAT)>> AND THAT RIDE IS THIS 1963 FORD GALAXIE

TWO DOOR POST MODEL. IT HAS A SUPER SOLID BODY AND THIS IS THE ORIGINAL 52 YEAR OLD PAINT. I BOUGHT IT STRAIGHT OUT OF THE PITS AT THE NHRA US NATIONALS UP IN INDIANAPOLIS, BACK IN 2007, AND ASIDE FROM THE WHEELS AND TIRES THE CAR WAS COMPLETELY ORIGINAL.

I REMOVED THE ORIGINAL 260 CUBIC INCH VEIGHT AND REPLACED IT WITH A 351 WINDSOR BUILT OUT OF SPARE

PARTS I COLLECTED OVER THE YEARS. IT'S GOT A SOLID ROLLER VALVETRAIN, NINE POINT THREE TO ONE COMPRESSION, IRON RHS 180cc HEADS, SUMMIT RACING DUAL PLANE INTAKE, AND A HOLLEY 750 HP CARB. THE POWER IS SOMEWHERE AROUND 400 HORSE.

IN MY PREVIOUS LIFE I BUILT NHRA PRO STOCK ENGINES FOR THE SUMMIT RACING TEAM.

THIS ENGINE COMBINES SOME OF THEIR CATALOG PARTS WITH SOME OF THAT RACING TECHNOLOGY. THIS MSD DIGITAL SEVEN PROGRAMMABLE IGNITION BOX ACTUALLY POWERED GREG ANDERSON TO THE NHRA WORLD PRO STOCK CHAMPIONSHIP IN 2010. NOW THAT'S COOL!

THE INTERIOR WILL TAKE YOU BACK IN TIME.

IT'S 52 YEARS OLD AND HAS THAT DISTINCTIVE OLD CAR AROMA THAT WE LOVE. CHECK OUT THE DIAMETER OF THE STEERING WHEEL. IT'S THE SAME SIZE AS A SCHOOL BUS AT 17 INCHES, AND NOTICE THAT SHIFTER LEVER. IT'S A THREE ON THE TREE, MEANING A THREE SPEED COLUMN SHIFTED TRANSMISSION.

THE REST OF IT SPEAKS FOR ITSELF, ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE ORIGINAL FACTORY CARPET. THE TRUNK IS THE SAME WAY, NO ROT, AND BIG ENOUGH TO USE AS A CAMPER.

(MIKE)>> ALONG WITH LITTLE BLACK AND BLUE THE GALAXIE IS ALSO GETTING THIS CUSTOM TREMEC MAGNUM SIX SPEED TRANSMISSION PREPPED BY AMERICAN POWERTRAIN. NOW THIS ISN'T YOUR STANDARD SIX SPEED GEAR BOX. THIS THING IS RATED TO HANDLE 1,100 POUND FEET OF TORQUE. NOW THE INTERNALS HAVE BEEN TUNED UP AND RECEIVED A SPECIAL PROCESS TO ACHIEVE THAT RATING. ALONG WITH IT IS A HYDRAULIC CLUTCH SETUP, AND A TWIN DISC CLUTCH IS IN THE WORKS.

(PAT)>> PUTTING ALL THAT POWER TO THE PAVEMENT IS THIS CUSTOM NINE INCH REAR END FROM CURRIE. THEIR OWN NINE PLUS NODULAR CASE HOUSES AN EATON TRUE TRACK DIFFERENTIAL SPINNING A YUKON GEAR 370 RING AND PINION. THE FAB NINE HOUSING HAS BEEN CONVERTED TO A NASCAR STYLE RIG WITH BAER'S TRACKER FULL FLOATER AXLE CONVERSION AND BAER'S MASSIVE 14 INCH DRILLED AND SLOTTED ROTORS ALONG WITH THEIR SIX PISTON CALIPERS WILL BRING IT ALL TO A STOP IN A HURRY.

(MIKE)>> SINCE WE HAVE THE EQUIPMENT, LET'S SEE WHAT THIS OLD '63 WILL PUT DOWN AT THE TIRES. PAT GUESTIMATES THE ENGINE MAKES 400 HORSEPOWER. SO TO THE ROLLERS WE GO. ALRIGHT PAT IT'S ALL YOU. I'M TAKING A FEW STEPS AWAY FROM THE PATH

OF THE DRIVESHAFT. NO TELLING HOW LONG THAT UJOINT HAS BEEN THERE. AND FOR ALL YOU YOUNGUNS, HERE'S HOW A THREE SPEED ON THE COLUMN WORKS. IN THIRD GEAR AND RPM STABILIZED AT 2,700, HERE WE GO.

MAN IT HAS CRISP THROTTLE RESPONSE.

IT'S ON ITS WAY TO 5,500 WITHOUT A HICK UP. 288 ON POWER, 324 ON TORQUE, NOT BAD!

(MIKE)>> THE PULLS ARE THE SAME FROM 2,700 TO 6,000, AND IT ALREADY SOUNDS A LITTLE BETTER. THAT'S A PRETTY BIG TUNE UP THERE SIR! WE WENT FROM 295 TO 315 ON POWER AND TORQUE PICKED UP EIGHT FOOT POUNDS TO 334. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO NEXT?

CHASSIS DYNO TO THE LIFT.

WE HAD A COOL IDEA DURING THE BREAK, AND SINCE WE HAVE THE ABILITY WE'RE REMOVING THE ENGINE AND PLACING IT ON THE ENGINE DYNO TO SEE HOW MUCH POWER IS ABSORBED THROUGH THE TRANS AND THE REAR END OF THIS 52 YEAR OLD VEHICLE. THE FIRST ITEM TO BE REMOVED IS THE DRIVESHAFT. AS FAR AS I CAN TELL IT'S THE ORIGINAL.

(MIKE)>> THE CLUTCH LINKAGE IS FAR FROM ORIGINAL AND HAD TO BE CHANGED FOR THE 351 SWAP. NOW PAT GOT THE GEOMETRY JUST RIGHT, AND CHECK OUT THE CLUTCH FORK PUSH ROD. BUILT OUT OF NECESSITY, A WRENCH WAS USED. BY PULLING THE CLIPS THE LINKAGE CAN BE REMOVED

FROM THE TRANS. NOW MISTER NECESSITY CAN BE PULLED OUT OF THE WAY, AND USING A RUBIK'S CUBE TACTIC THE STARTER COMES OUT TOO. THE EXHAUST GOES AWAY AND WILL NOT BE REUSED. NOW OUR MATCO TRANSMISSION JACK CAN SUPPORT THE TRANS SO WE CAN UNBOLT ITS CROSSMEMBER, REMOVE THE

BELL HOUSING FASTENERS, SEPARATE THE TRANS FROM THE BLOCK.

(PAT)>> YOU'RE CLEAR BABY.

(MIKE)>> AND LOWER IT ALL DOWN.

(PAT)>> THIS IS THE PINNACLE OF 1963 TECHNOLOGY. NOW WE CAN DRAIN THE COOLANT. WE'LL ALSO DRAIN THE BLOCK ONCE WE GET IT ON THE RUN STAND SO WE DON'T MIX ANY OF IT WITH THE DYNO'S WATER.

FROM THE TOP WE CAN REMOVE THE COIL WIRE, DISTRIBUTOR LEAD FROM THE IGNITION BOX, TEMP SENDER WIRE, OIL

PRESSURE LINE, UNHOOK THE HOSES, FUEL LINE, REMOVE THE CARB, AND ATTACH THE LIFT PLATE. DETACH THE RADIATOR, AND WITH THE ENGINE MOUNT NUTS

REMOVED AND HOMEMADE ENGINE LIMITER TAKEN OFF, IT'S COMING OUT. WE LEFT THE DISTRIBUTOR IN THE SAME PLACE AND WILL NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES TO THE CARB. THIS THING'S SO BIG YOU COULD STICK TWO ENGINES IN IT. WE'RE ALSO RUNNING THESE HEADERS SO THE TEST IS THE REAL DEAL.

SO ON THE RUN CART IT GOES. OUR DRIVE PLATE FOR THE DYNO HAS MOST PRESSURE PLATE BOLT PATTERNS. THIS ALLOWS US TO RUN THE SAME FLYWHEEL WE USED IN THE CAR. FOR SAFETY WE ARE REMOVING THE MECHANICAL FAN BUT THE WATER PUMP WILL STILL BE TURNED BY THE BELT. GOING FROM THE CHASSIS DYNO TO THE ENGINE DYNO SEEMS BACKWARDS BUT IT WILL GIVE A REAL WORLD REPORT OF HOW MUCH POWER IS SOAKED UP BY THE GALAXIE'S DRIVELINE. THE CHASSIS DYNO IS INERTIA DRIVEN, MEANING THE LOAD THE ENGINE SEES IS BY THE WEIGHT OF THE DRUM THAT IT'S SPINNING OUT BACK. AN ENGINE DYNO LOADS WITH A WATER BREAK. WE INPUT PARAMETERS TO CONTROL THE ENGINE'S ACCELERATION RATE. WHILE THEY LOAD THE ENGINE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT, IF THEY'RE REPEATABLE THEY WILL BOTH GIVE ACCURATE RESULTS.

(MIKE)>> FOR AN ACCURATE COMPARISON WE'RE RUNNING 35 DEGREES OF TIMING, THE SAME HEADERS, AND EVEN DRAINED THE GAS OUT OF THE CAR AND PUT IT IN THE DYNO CELL. ALRIGHT 27 TO SIX, EVERYTHING'S SET UP AS IT WAS IN THE CAR, READY?

(MIKE)>> GOOD DEAL! TO DO THAT WE OPEN A VALVE THAT ALLOWS COOL WATER TO ENTER THE HOLDING TANK FOR ABOUT 25 SECONDS.

THEN CLOSE THE VALVE TO TRAP IT IN THE TANK. IT WON'T CIRCULATE INTO THE ENGINE UNTIL IT'S

RUNNING SINCE WE HAVE A MECHANICAL WATER PUMP. WITH IT IDLING THE TEMPERATURE DROPS, WHICH COOLS THE HEAD'S CHAMBERS AND THE BLOCK. ALRIGHT, GOT OIL TEMP IN HER, WATER TEMP'S DOWN WHERE WE WANT IT, COOL THE CHAMBER.

(PAT)>> THIS IS THE GRAND FINALE.
