(LT)>> THAT'S REALLY NOT IMPORTANT. WHAT'S IMPORTANT IS OUR BLAZER. NOW THE BODY, IT'S A LITTLE WAYS AWAY FROM BEING REUNITED WITH THE FRAME, BUT WE'RE MAKING PROGRESS EVERYDAY.
(JEREMY)>> SINCE THE LAST TIME YOU GUYS SAW THIS THING, UNFORTUNATELY, WE'VE BEEN BUSY METAL WORKING. WE PICKED UP WHAT WAS A PRETTY CLEAN BLAZER, BUT WHEN WE GOT IT BACK FROM THE SAND BLASTER IT HAD A LITTLE BIT OF RUST. SO WE GOT IT INTO EPOXY PRIMER. WE CUT OUT ALL THE CANCER, WELDED IN NEW SHEET METAL, AND THEN PRIMED OUR PATCHES. SO NOW WE'VE GOT A SOLID BODY.
(LT)>> WE'VE TAKEN THAT SOLID BODY AND MOUNTED IT ONTO A ROTISSERIE. THIS'LL LET US FLIP THE BODY UPSIDE DOWN SO WE HAVE EASY ACCESS TO DO A BUNCH OF WORK, CHECK IT OUT.

(JEREMY)>> YEP! ALL RIGHT, FOR EXAMPLE, HERE'S A PATCH PANEL WE DIDN'T HAVE JUST LAYING AROUND. SO THIS STARTED AS A FLAT PIECE OF SHEET METAL. I THEN BEAD ROLLED THIS HUMP IN TO MATCH THE FACTORY STAMPING AND BUTT WELDED IN THE SHEET METAL. NOW WHILE WE HAVE ACCESS TO ALL THIS IT'S A PERFECT TIME TO GIVE THE UNDERSIDE A GOOD COATING. IT'LL SEAL AND PROTECT ALL OF THE METAL, BUT NOT ONLY THAT MAKE IT LOOK REALLY GOOD. SO GIVE THIS BLAZER A NEW LEASE ON LIFE, AND SINCE WE WANT A QUIET, COOL RIDE IN OUR BLAZER WE'RE GOING TO COAT THE BOTTOM SIDE WITH LIZARD SKIN. WE'LL START OFF WITH A COAT OF THEIR SOUND CONTROL, FOLLOWED UP BY A COAT OF THEIR CERAMIC INSULATION. NOW THE SOUND CONTROL WILL DAMPEN VIBRATIONS AND KILL ANY ROAD NOISE WE MAY HAVE, BUT NOT ONLY THAT IT'LL PROTECT OUR BLAZER SO IT LASTS FOR YEARS. NOW ONE THING THAT I LOVE ABOUT THESE PRODUCTS IS THAT THEY'RE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY AND THEY CLEAN UP EASY WITH WATER. SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT MAKING A HUGE MESS IN YOUR SHOP. ALL WE NEED TO DO NOW IS SCUFF THE BOTTOM SIDE AND DO A LITTLE BIT OF MASKING. HOW'S IT GOING OVER?

(JEREMY)>> LIZARD SKIN CANNOT BE APPLIED OVER BARE METAL. SO MAKE SURE YOU PRIME THE SURFACE WHERE YOU PLAN TO USE IT. SINCE OUR PRIMER IS PAST THE WINDOW TO BE TOP COATED WE NEED TO MAKE SURE WE SCUFF IT UP SO THE LIZARD SKIN STICKS. FOR THIS WE'RE USING A RED SCUFF PAD. THEN WE CAN MASK THE EDGES OF THE SHEET METAL JUST TO SAVE TIME ON CLEAN UP. THIS IS LIZARD SKIN'S SUPER PRO APPLICATION KIT. IT COMES WITH THIS GUN THAT HAS A ONE QUART CUP, THE STIR PADDLE, AND A MILL THICKNESS GAUGE SO YOU SEE HOW MUCH YOU HAVE APPLIED TO THE PANEL. THERE IS NO MIXING INVOLVED. SO ONCE IT'S STIRRED IT CAN GO STRAIGHT INTO THE GUN. WE'RE STARTING BY LAYING DOWN ONE COAT OF THE SOUND CONTROL. NOW FOR THESE PRODUCTS TO WORK AT THEIR FULL POTENTIAL YOU'LL ALWAYS LAY THIS PRODUCT DOWN FIRST BEFORE THE CERAMIC INSULATION, AND THE LIZARD SKIN SUPER PRO SPRAYER HANDLES THE THICKNESS OF THE MATERIAL WITH EASE.
ONE COAT WILL GIVE US RIGHT AROUND 20 MILLS OF THICKNESS. WE'LL LET THAT FLASH FOR A FEW MINUTES AND LAY DOWN ONE MORE COAT, GIVING US A TOTAL OF 40 MILLS. WITH THE SOUND CONTROL LAID DOWN, WE NEED TO WAIT 24 TO 36 HOURS BEFORE WE LAY DOWN THE CERAMIC INSULATION. THIS GIVES THE WATER IN THE PRODUCT TIME TO EVAPORATE. IF WE WENT AHEAD AND LAID DOWN THE CERAMIC OVER THE WET SOUND CONTROL THIS COULD CAUSE BLISTERING DOWN THE ROAD, AND THE TWO PRODUCTS WOULD SEPARATE. SO MAKE SURE YOU READ THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE YOU SPRAY THIS STUFF. 24 HOURS LATER WE'RE READY TO LAY DOWN THE CERAMIC INSULATION. THIS IS A THERMAL COATING THAT CAN WITHSTAND UP TO 500 DEGREES, AND NOT ONLY WILL WE SPRAY THE BOTTOM OF OUR KFIVE BUT WE'LL END UP SPRAYING THE INSIDE AS WELL. THIS WILL CUT DOWN OUR INTERIOR TEMPS UP TO 30 DEGREES. I'M COVERING THE FLOOR OF THE CAB AND THE BED FLOOR BUT I'M STAYING OUT OF THE WHEEL WELLS. WE COATED THEM WITH SOUND CONTROL TO ELIMINATE ROAD NOISE BUT THERE IS NO HEAT CREATED IN THE WHEEL WELL. SO DON'T WASTE ANY PRODUCT WHERE IT'S NOT NEEDED. SAVE IT FOR THE NEXT PROJECT. WELL THERE YOU GO. NOT ONLY DOES IT LOOK GOOD, WE'VE GOT ONE QUIET, COOL, CLASSY KFIVE.

(JEREMY)>> YOU KNOW 10 OR SO YEARS AGO IF YOU WERE MAKING 400 HORSEPOWER WITH A DIESEL ENGINE, WELL YOU WERE DOING SOMETHING, BUT NOW DAYS YOU CAN RUN DOWN TO THE DEALERSHIP, BUY A BRAND NEW PICK, AND WITH A FEW UPGRADES MAKE NEARLY 1,000 HORSEPOWER PRETTY EASY.
(LT)>> IT'S A LITTLE MORE THAN A FEW UPGRADES, BUT I MEAN THE POINT IS 1,000 HORSEPOWER IS NOTHING ANYMORE. I WAS ACTUALLY AT A DYNO EVENT THIS SPRING AND I SAW TWO CUMMINS POWERED TRUCKS, TRIPLE TURBOS, TRIPLE FUEL PUMPS, PUT DOWN 2,400 HORSE TO THE WHEELS.
(JEREMY)>> UNBELIEVABLE, SO THAT'S WHAT WE'RE DOING HERE RIGHT?
(LT)>> WE MAY NOT MAKE 2,400, WE MIGHT NOT MAKE 1,000 FOR A LITTLE WHILE, BUT IF WERE BETWEEN 500 AND 600 HORSE AT THE WHEELS WHEN WE'RE DONE THAT'S PRETTY GOOD FOR STOCK BOTTOM END DURAMAX.
(JEREMY)>> BE A REALLY FUN TRUCK AT THAT MUCH. YOU KNOW WE'VE GOT OUR DURAMAX ENGINE ALL ASSEMBLED AND SET BACK INTO THE TRUCK, BUT CHECK THIS OUT. THESE ARE OUR STOCK ENGINE MOUNTS, AND YOU CAN SEE THEY'VE BEEN TORN APART FROM THE TORQUE OF THE ENGINE, AND THAT'S AT NEARLY STOCK POWER LEVELS, AND WE PLAN TO INCREASE POWER A BUNCH. SO WE NEEDED AN UPGRADE. SO WE INSTALLED MERCHANT AUTOMOTIVE HIGH PERFORMANCE MOTOR MOUNTS. THEY HAVE HALF INCH BOLTS AND URETHANE BUSHINGS. SO OUR ENGINE WILL BE HELD FIRMLY IN PLACE. WITH THE ENGINE ASSEMBLED WE NEED A WAY TO PUMP SOME AIR THROUGH IT. NOW THE STOCK TURBO, IT WORKED OKAY, IT PUSHED OUR LBSEVEN TO 374 REAR WHEEL HORSEPOWER, BUT THAT WAS AT A HIGHER BOOST LEVEL THAN STOCK. SO IF WE PUSHED IT ANY FURTHER IT WILL SOON RUN OUT OF ITS EFFICIENCY ZONE. BASICALLY ONCE WE GET TO A CERTAIN POINT WE CAN TURN UP THE FUEL AND SPIN THE TURBO FASTER AND FASTER, BUT IT WON'T BE FLOWING ANY MORE AIR BUT WILL BE PRODUCING MORE HEAT. WHEN COMBINED WITH MORE FUEL THAT'LL RAISE THE EGT'S OR EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURES TO AN UNSAFE LEVEL. SO THIS DUDE HAS GOT TO GO AND GET REPLACED WITH A LARGER TURBO.
(LT)>> TO REPLACE OUR FACTORY PARTS WE WENT TO SCREAMIN' DIESEL PERFORMANCE AND PICKED UP THIS TURBO KIT, AND IT ALL REVOLVES AROUND THIS GUY RIGHT HERE, A BORG WARNER S-366-SXE TURBO CHARGER. IT HAS A 66 MILLIMETER INDUCER ON THE COMPRESSOR WHEEL, A 74 MILLIMETER TURBINE, A TFOUR DIVIDED INLET FLANGE, AND A THREE INCH VBAND TO CONNECT TO THE DOWN PIPE. NOW A TURBO LIKE THIS WILL SUPPORT 675 HORSEPOWER WITH SOME FUELING MODS. NOW WE'RE ON A STOCK CPTHREE AND STOCK FUEL INJECTORS. SO WE'LL PROBABLY ONLY BE ABLE TO GET TO ABOUT 600 HORSEPOWER IF WE REALLY WANT TO LEAN ON IT. NOW THE NICE THING ABOUT A TURBO THIS SIZE ON A SIX POINT SIX LITER DIESEL IS THE FACT THAT THIS WILL ONLY SPOOL 150 TO 200 RPM'S HIGHER THAN STOCK. NOW THAT MEANS YOU CAN STILL USE YOUR DIESEL TRUCK AS A WORK TRUCK. YOU CAN STILL HAUL A HEAVY TRAILER, DAILY DRIVE THE TRUCK, TAKE TO THE DRAG STRIP ON THE WEEKENDS, AND JUST HAVE SOME FUN WITH IT, AND BEST OF ALL IT HAS ENOUGH AIR FLOW TO KEEP THOSE EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURES AT A COMFORTABLE LEVEL. SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT HURTING YOUR BOTTOM END. NOW YOU CAN BUY A TURBO CHARGER PRETTY MUCH ANYWHERE, BUT THE REAL TRICK ON A DIESEL IS FINDING ONE THAT'LL BOLT ON AS A KIT WITHOUT ANY MODIFICATIONS. WE ALREADY INSTALLED THE TFOUR TURBO PEDESTAL INTO THE VALLEY OF THE ENGINE WHEN WE HAD IT OUT OF THE TRUCK LAST TIME. IT'S JUST A LOT EASIER TO HOOK EVERYTHING UP. YOU GET ALL THE NECESSARY SILICONE COUPLERS AND CLAMPS YOU NEED FOR A COMPLETE INSTALLATION. THERE'S ALSO A NEW TURBO FEED LINE AND OIL DRAIN LINE, AND A COUPLE OF GASKETS. NOW THIS STUFF OVER HERE, THIS IS WHERE THE KIT REALLY STANDS OUT. WE CHOSE TO GET EVERYTHING POWDER COATED IN "ILLUSION ORANGE". IT COMPLIMENTS THE COLOR OF THE TRUCK NICELY, BUT SDP WILL POWDER COAT YOUR KIT IN NEARLY ANY COLOR UNDER THE RAINBOW. IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU WANT. OVER HERE WE HAVE A FOUR INCH HIGH FLOW TURBO INLET AND A CLEANABLE FILTER, AND WE HAVE SOME THREE INCH HIGH FLOW CHARGE PIPES. NOW EACH OF THEM HAVE TWO EIGHTH INCH NPT PORTS, BOTH BEFORE AND AFTER THE INTERCOOLER. SO YOU CAN MEASURE YOUR BOOST OR YOU CAN HOOK UP A METHANOL INJECTION NOZZLE. YOU ALSO GET A POWDER COATED UPPER RADIATOR HOSE, AND THIS IS A THREE INCH HIGH FLOW YBRIDGE. NOW THIS PIECE IS WHERE THE PRESSURIZED AIR ACTUALLY ENTERS THE ENGINE AND IT SPLITS OFF BETWEEN THE LEFT AND THE RIGHT CYLINDER BANK. WE HAVE A DRIVER'S SIDE CHARGE PIPE, A THREE INCH CERAMIC COATED DOWN PIPE, AND THE ICING ON THE CAKE IS THIS GUY, A POWDER COATED FABRICATED ALUMINUM COOLANT EXPANSION TANK.

(LT)>> WE'RE BACK ON TRUCK TECH ROCKIN' ON OUR STAGE TWO UPGRADES FOR PROJECT "SUPERMAX". INSTALLATION OF OUR SCREAMIN' DIESEL PERFORMANCE TURBO KIT STARTS BY PUTTING SOME NEW ORINGS ONTO THE YBRIDGE, LUBING THEM UP, AND SLIDING THE BRIDGE INTO THE VALLEY. IT DOES TAKE A BIT OF FORCE TO COMPRESS THE SEALS AND GET THE HARDWARE TO LINE UP. FOUR BOLTS ON EACH CYLINDER BANK CONNECT IT TO THE ENGINE. THE OIL DRAIN FITTING IS ATTACHED TO THE TURBO. THEN THE DRAIN LINE SLIDES UNDERNEATH THE PEDESTAL AND ATTACHES TO THE BLOCK IN THE ORIGINAL OIL RETURN PORT. THEN I CAN LOWER THE TURBO ONTO THE PEDESTAL, CONNECT THE LINE UNDERNEATH, AND FINALLY SECURE THE TURBO WITH FOUR BOLTS. I'VE COATED THE HARDWARE WITH ANTISEIZE IN THE EVENT WE EVER NEED TO REMOVE IT LATER ON. NEXT IS THE DOWN PIPE. IT SLIDES IN BETWEEN THE TURBO AND THE FIREWALL, AND IT'S HELD INTO PLACE WITH A VBAND CLAMP. I WON'T ATTACH THE OTHER END UNTIL WE GET THE TRANSMISSION IN PLACE LATER ON.

(LT)>> OH MAN, I HAD TWO BOWLS. BEFORE WE GO ANY FURTHER WE NEED TO INSTALL THE RADIATOR AND INTERCOOLER. THE A/C CONDENSER GOES IN, BUT YOU CAN'T RUSH PERFECTION, FOLLOWED BY THE FRONT RADIATOR SUPPORT BEAM. INSTEAD OF USING TRADITIONAL SILICONE COUPLERS, SDP USES BILLET DUAL SEAL CONNECTORS ON THE YBRIDGE AND THE COMPRESSOR OUTLET. TWO ORINGS, A SEALING SLEEVE, AND AN OUTER CLAMP AND THE CONNECTION WILL HOLD UP TO A TON OF BOOST, AND WILL STILL ALLOW FLEXIBILITY FOR ENGINE MOVEMENT. WITH THESE WE'LL NEVER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT BLOWING OFF A SILICONE COUPLER UNDER HIGH BOOST AGAIN. THE COMPRESSOR DISCHARGE NEEDS TO BE CLOCKED TO LINE UP PROPERLY WITH THE DRIVER'S SIDE TUBE, AND IT'S AN EASY FIX. JUST LOOSEN UP THE BOLTS, AND TWIST THE HOUSING, LINE UP THE CLAMP...
...AND TIGHTEN EVERYTHING BACK UP. NEXT OUR NEW COOLANT TANK WILL GO ON THE PASSENGER SIDE FENDER. THE NEW RADIATOR TUBE SLIPS INTO PLACE...
...AND THE FOUR INCH HIGH FLOW TURBO INLET ATTACHES, AND THE CLEANABLE NONOILED FILTER SEALS THE DEAL. ONE OF THE LAST THINGS WE NEED TO INSTALL IS A FEED LINE TO GET OIL FROM THE ENGINE UP INTO THE TURBO CHARGER. NO FROM THE FACTORY THE DURAMAX TURBO GETS OIL THROUGH THE VALLEY OF THE BLOCK BY THE SUPPORT RIGHT ABOVE A CAM BEARING. SO IF ANYTHING WERE TO EVER HAPPEN INSIDE THAT ENGINE AND THAT BEARING WERE TO SPIN THE TURBO WILL BE CUT OFF FROM OIL AND WOULD GET DAMAGED AS WELL. SO TO PREVENT THAT FROM HAPPENING SDP PROVIDES THIS NEW LONGER OIL FEED LINE THAT GRABS OIL FROM THE SIDE OF THE BLOCK DOWN BY THE OIL FILTER. SO NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS INSIDE YOUR ENGINE THE TURBO WILL ALWAYS RECEIVE FRESH OIL AND IT WON'T GET DAMAGED. WITH THE AN FITTING SECURED, THIS TURBO KIT IS DONE.
MANY VEHICLES COME FROM THE FACTORY WITH A TURBO CHARGER, AND IN THE AFTERMARKET WORLD IT'S COMMON PRACTICE TO ADD OR UPGRADE AN EXISTING TURBO LIKE WE'VE DONE ON OUR LBSEVEN DURAMAX SPORT TRUCK. NOW IN THE WORLD OF FORCED INDUCTION THERE A TON OF OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM YOU CAN HAVE A CENTRIFUGAL, ROOTS STYLE, OR A TWIN SCREW SUPER CHARGER, BUT LATELY THE TURBO CHARGER HAS GAINED POPULARITY AND IT'S QUICKLY BECOME THE GOTO OPTION FOR GUYS WANTING A WHOLE BUNCH OF POWER, BUT NOT EVERYBODY KNOWS HOW THEY WORK OR WHAT'S INSIDE. ONE OF THE REASONS WHY TURBO CHARGERS ARE SO POPULAR IS BECAUSE THEY USE FREE ENERGY TO DRIVE THEM, RATHER THAN ROBBING POWER FROM THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE WITH A BELT LIKE A SUPERCHARGER. PLUS THERE'S NO BELT TO SLIP. HOT EXHAUST GASES LEAVE THE ENGINE AND ENTER THE TURBINE HOUSING WHERE A TURBINE WHEEL IS SPUN, AND THE SPENT EXHAUST GASES EXIT THE TRUCK. ON THE OTHER SIDE A COMPRESSOR WHEEL DRAWS IN AIR FROM THE ATMOSPHERE AND FORCES IT INTO THE ENGINE. THE TURBINE WHEEL AND COMPRESSOR ARE CONNECTED BY A SHAFT THAT RIDES ON A HIGH SPEED BEARING OR BUSHINGS. SOME TURBOS CAN SPIN AS FAST AS 100,000 RPM. WITH THE BASICS EXPLAINED, LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT A REAL WORLD EXAMPLE. THIS IS A TURBO THAT WE PULLED FROM OUR LBSEVEN DURAMAX, AND THE HOUSINGS MAY LOOK A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT FROM YOUR STANDARD AFTERMARKET TURBO, BUT THE PRINCIPLES ARE EXACTLY THE SAME. FIRST OF ALL IT'S SUPER EASY TO TELL WHICH SIDE IS WHICH JUST BY LOOKING AT IT. THE TURBINE, OR EXHAUST SIDE, IS USUALLY MADE FROM CAST IRON, OR IN SOME CASES STAINLESS STEEL, AND IT WILL BE RUSTED OR DISCOLORED FROM THE HEAT OF THE EXHAUST. THE COMPRESSOR HOUSING IS NEARLY ALWAYS MADE FROM ALUMINUM SINCE THERE IS VERY LITTLE HEAT FOR IT TO DEAL WITH. THE CENTER OF THE TURBO IS REFERRED TO AS A CARTRIDGE, AND THIS IS WHERE THE BEARINGS SIT AND THE SHAFT GETS LUBRICATED AND COOLED. PRESSURIZED OIL FROM THE ENGINE ENTERS THE TURBO FROM THE TOP AND GRAVITY DRAINS OUT THE BOTTOM. WHEN MOUNTING YOUR TURBO IT'S CRITICAL THAT THE OIL DRAIN BE FACING STRAIGHT DOWN. IF IT'S JUST A LITTLE BIT OFF THE OIL WON'T DRAIN PROPERLY, AND IT CAN PUSH PAST THE SEALS AND CAUSE SMOKE. ON SOME TURBOS LIKE THIS ONE THERE ARE TWO ADDITIONAL PORTS IN THE SIDE OF THE CARTRIDGE. NOW ENGINE COOLING CAN CIRCULATE THROUGH THESE AND IT'LL PULL ADDITIONAL HEAT AWAY FROM THE BEARINGS, KEEPING EVERYTHING NICE AND HAPPY. A WASTE GATE'S FUNCTION IS TO CONTROL BOOST LEVEL. NOW THIS ONE IS INTERNAL TO THE EXHAUST HOUSING, AND IT'S CONTROLLED BY A DIAPHRAGM WITH SPRINGS INSIDE, AND IT USES A BOOST REFERENCE. BASICALLY IF YOUR BOOST IS TOO HIGH THE WASTE GATE IS GONNA OPEN UP AND IT'LL BYPASS EXHAUST AROUND THE TURBINE. IT'LL SLOW DOWN AND YOUR BOOST LEVEL WILL GO DOWN WITH IT. OR IF YOUR BOOST IS TOO LOW, THE GATE STAYS SHUT AND THE BOOST LEVEL WILL RAISE. NOW WE'RE REALLY JUST SCRATCHING THE SURFACE BUT NOW YOU KNOW JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT TURBO CHARGERS.

WE CUT OUT ALL THE CANCER, WELDED IN NEW SHEET METAL, AND THEN PRIMED OUR PATCHES. SO NOW WE'VE GOT A SOLID BODY.

I THEN BEAD ROLLED THIS HUMP IN TO MATCH THE FACTORY STAMPING AND BUTT WELDED IN THE SHEET METAL. NOW WHILE WE HAVE ACCESS TO ALL THIS IT'S A PERFECT TIME TO GIVE THE UNDERSIDE A GOOD COATING. IT'LL SEAL AND PROTECT ALL OF THE METAL, BUT NOT ONLY THAT MAKE IT LOOK REALLY GOOD. SO GIVE THIS BLAZER A NEW LEASE ON LIFE, AND SINCE WE WANT A QUIET, COOL RIDE IN OUR BLAZER WE'RE GOING TO COAT THE BOTTOM SIDE WITH LIZARD SKIN. WE'LL START OFF WITH A COAT OF THEIR SOUND CONTROL, FOLLOWED UP BY A COAT OF THEIR CERAMIC INSULATION. NOW THE SOUND CONTROL WILL DAMPEN VIBRATIONS AND KILL ANY ROAD NOISE WE MAY HAVE, BUT NOT ONLY THAT IT'LL PROTECT OUR BLAZER SO IT LASTS FOR YEARS. NOW ONE THING THAT I LOVE ABOUT THESE PRODUCTS IS THAT THEY'RE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY AND THEY CLEAN UP EASY WITH WATER. SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT MAKING A HUGE MESS IN YOUR SHOP. ALL WE NEED TO DO NOW IS SCUFF THE BOTTOM SIDE AND DO A LITTLE BIT OF MASKING. HOW'S IT GOING OVER?

(JEREMY)>> LIZARD SKIN CANNOT BE APPLIED OVER BARE METAL. SO MAKE SURE YOU PRIME THE SURFACE WHERE YOU PLAN TO USE IT. SINCE OUR PRIMER IS PAST THE WINDOW TO BE TOP COATED WE NEED TO MAKE SURE WE SCUFF IT UP SO THE LIZARD SKIN STICKS. FOR THIS WE'RE USING A RED SCUFF PAD. THEN WE CAN MASK THE EDGES OF THE SHEET METAL JUST TO SAVE TIME ON CLEAN UP. THIS IS LIZARD SKIN'S SUPER PRO APPLICATION KIT. IT COMES WITH THIS GUN THAT HAS A ONE QUART CUP, THE STIR PADDLE, AND A MILL THICKNESS GAUGE SO YOU SEE HOW MUCH YOU HAVE APPLIED TO THE PANEL. THERE IS NO MIXING INVOLVED. SO ONCE IT'S STIRRED IT CAN GO STRAIGHT INTO THE GUN. WE'RE STARTING BY LAYING DOWN ONE COAT OF THE SOUND CONTROL. NOW FOR THESE PRODUCTS TO WORK AT THEIR FULL POTENTIAL YOU'LL ALWAYS LAY THIS PRODUCT DOWN FIRST BEFORE THE CERAMIC INSULATION, AND THE LIZARD SKIN SUPER PRO SPRAYER HANDLES THE THICKNESS OF THE MATERIAL WITH EASE.
ONE COAT WILL GIVE US RIGHT AROUND 20 MILLS OF THICKNESS. WE'LL LET THAT FLASH FOR A FEW MINUTES AND LAY DOWN ONE MORE COAT, GIVING US A TOTAL OF 40 MILLS. WITH THE SOUND CONTROL LAID DOWN, WE NEED TO WAIT 24 TO 36 HOURS BEFORE WE LAY DOWN THE CERAMIC INSULATION. THIS GIVES THE WATER IN THE PRODUCT TIME TO EVAPORATE. IF WE WENT AHEAD AND LAID DOWN THE CERAMIC OVER THE WET SOUND CONTROL THIS COULD CAUSE BLISTERING DOWN THE ROAD, AND THE TWO PRODUCTS WOULD SEPARATE. SO MAKE SURE YOU READ THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE YOU SPRAY THIS STUFF. 24 HOURS LATER WE'RE READY TO LAY DOWN THE CERAMIC INSULATION. THIS IS A THERMAL COATING THAT CAN WITHSTAND UP TO 500 DEGREES, AND NOT ONLY WILL WE SPRAY THE BOTTOM OF OUR KFIVE BUT WE'LL END UP SPRAYING THE INSIDE AS WELL. THIS WILL CUT DOWN OUR INTERIOR TEMPS UP TO 30 DEGREES. I'M COVERING THE FLOOR OF THE CAB AND THE BED FLOOR BUT I'M STAYING OUT OF THE WHEEL WELLS. WE COATED THEM WITH SOUND CONTROL TO ELIMINATE ROAD NOISE BUT THERE IS NO HEAT CREATED IN THE WHEEL WELL. SO DON'T WASTE ANY PRODUCT WHERE IT'S NOT NEEDED. SAVE IT FOR THE NEXT PROJECT. (LT)>> IT'S A LITTLE MORE THAN A FEW UPGRADES, BUT I MEAN THE POINT IS 1,000 HORSEPOWER IS NOTHING ANYMORE. I WAS ACTUALLY AT A DYNO EVENT THIS SPRING AND I SAW TWO CUMMINS POWERED TRUCKS, TRIPLE TURBOS, TRIPLE FUEL PUMPS, PUT DOWN 2,400 HORSE TO THE WHEELS.

THESE ARE OUR STOCK ENGINE MOUNTS, AND YOU CAN SEE THEY'VE BEEN TORN APART FROM THE TORQUE OF THE ENGINE, AND THAT'S AT NEARLY STOCK POWER LEVELS, AND WE PLAN TO INCREASE POWER A BUNCH. SO WE NEEDED AN UPGRADE. SO WE INSTALLED MERCHANT AUTOMOTIVE HIGH PERFORMANCE MOTOR MOUNTS. THEY HAVE HALF INCH BOLTS AND URETHANE BUSHINGS. SO OUR ENGINE WILL BE HELD FIRMLY IN PLACE. WITH THE ENGINE ASSEMBLED WE NEED A WAY TO PUMP SOME AIR THROUGH IT. NOW THE STOCK TURBO, IT WORKED OKAY, IT PUSHED OUR LBSEVEN TO 374 REAR WHEEL HORSEPOWER, BUT THAT WAS AT A HIGHER BOOST LEVEL THAN STOCK. SO IF WE PUSHED IT ANY FURTHER IT WILL SOON RUN OUT OF ITS EFFICIENCY ZONE. BASICALLY ONCE WE GET TO A CERTAIN POINT WE CAN TURN UP THE FUEL AND SPIN THE TURBO FASTER AND FASTER, BUT IT WON'T BE FLOWING ANY MORE AIR BUT WILL BE PRODUCING MORE HEAT. WHEN COMBINED WITH MORE FUEL THAT'LL RAISE THE EGT'S OR EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURES TO AN UNSAFE LEVEL. SO THIS DUDE HAS GOT TO GO AND GET REPLACED WITH A LARGER TURBO.
(LT)>> TO REPLACE OUR FACTORY PARTS WE WENT TO SCREAMIN' DIESEL PERFORMANCE AND PICKED UP THIS TURBO KIT, AND IT ALL REVOLVES AROUND THIS GUY RIGHT HERE, A BORG WARNER S-366-SXE TURBO CHARGER. IT HAS A 66 MILLIMETER INDUCER ON THE COMPRESSOR WHEEL, A 74 MILLIMETER TURBINE, A TFOUR DIVIDED INLET FLANGE, AND A THREE INCH VBAND TO CONNECT TO THE DOWN PIPE. NOW A TURBO LIKE THIS WILL SUPPORT 675 HORSEPOWER WITH SOME FUELING MODS. NOW WE'RE ON A STOCK CPTHREE AND STOCK FUEL INJECTORS. SO WE'LL PROBABLY ONLY BE ABLE TO GET TO ABOUT 600 HORSEPOWER IF WE REALLY WANT TO LEAN ON IT. NOW THE NICE THING ABOUT A TURBO THIS SIZE ON A SIX POINT SIX LITER DIESEL IS THE FACT THAT THIS WILL ONLY SPOOL 150 TO 200 RPM'S HIGHER THAN STOCK. NOW THAT MEANS YOU CAN STILL USE YOUR DIESEL TRUCK AS A WORK TRUCK. YOU CAN STILL HAUL A HEAVY TRAILER, DAILY DRIVE THE TRUCK, TAKE TO THE DRAG STRIP ON THE WEEKENDS, AND JUST HAVE SOME FUN WITH IT, AND BEST OF ALL IT HAS ENOUGH AIR FLOW TO KEEP THOSE EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURES AT A COMFORTABLE LEVEL. SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT HURTING YOUR BOTTOM END. NOW YOU CAN BUY A TURBO CHARGER PRETTY MUCH ANYWHERE, BUT THE REAL TRICK ON A DIESEL IS FINDING ONE THAT'LL BOLT ON AS A KIT WITHOUT ANY MODIFICATIONS. WE ALREADY INSTALLED THE TFOUR TURBO PEDESTAL INTO THE VALLEY OF THE ENGINE WHEN WE HAD IT OUT OF THE TRUCK LAST TIME. IT'S JUST A LOT EASIER TO HOOK EVERYTHING UP. YOU GET ALL THE NECESSARY SILICONE COUPLERS AND CLAMPS YOU NEED FOR A COMPLETE INSTALLATION. THERE'S ALSO A NEW TURBO FEED LINE AND OIL DRAIN LINE, AND A COUPLE OF GASKETS. NOW THIS STUFF OVER HERE, THIS IS WHERE THE KIT REALLY STANDS OUT. WE CHOSE TO GET EVERYTHING POWDER COATED IN "ILLUSION ORANGE". IT COMPLIMENTS THE COLOR OF THE TRUCK NICELY, BUT SDP WILL POWDER COAT YOUR KIT IN NEARLY ANY COLOR UNDER THE RAINBOW. IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU WANT. OVER HERE WE HAVE A FOUR INCH HIGH FLOW TURBO INLET AND A CLEANABLE FILTER, AND WE HAVE SOME THREE INCH HIGH FLOW CHARGE PIPES. NOW EACH OF THEM HAVE TWO EIGHTH INCH NPT PORTS, BOTH BEFORE AND AFTER THE INTERCOOLER. SO YOU CAN MEASURE YOUR BOOST OR YOU CAN HOOK UP A METHANOL INJECTION NOZZLE. YOU ALSO GET A POWDER COATED UPPER RADIATOR HOSE, AND THIS IS A THREE INCH HIGH FLOW YBRIDGE. NOW THIS PIECE IS WHERE THE PRESSURIZED AIR ACTUALLY ENTERS THE ENGINE AND IT SPLITS OFF BETWEEN THE LEFT AND THE RIGHT CYLINDER BANK. WE HAVE A DRIVER'S SIDE CHARGE PIPE, A THREE INCH CERAMIC COATED DOWN PIPE, AND THE ICING ON THE CAKE IS THIS GUY, A POWDER COATED FABRICATED ALUMINUM COOLANT EXPANSION TANK.

THEN I CAN LOWER THE TURBO ONTO THE PEDESTAL, CONNECT THE LINE UNDERNEATH, AND FINALLY SECURE THE TURBO WITH FOUR BOLTS. THE A/C CONDENSER GOES IN, BUT YOU CAN'T RUSH PERFECTION, FOLLOWED BY THE FRONT RADIATOR SUPPORT BEAM. INSTEAD OF USING TRADITIONAL SILICONE COUPLERS, SDP USES BILLET DUAL SEAL CONNECTORS ON THE YBRIDGE AND THE COMPRESSOR OUTLET. TWO ORINGS, A SEALING SLEEVE, AND AN OUTER CLAMP AND THE CONNECTION WILL HOLD UP TO A TON OF BOOST, AND WILL STILL ALLOW FLEXIBILITY FOR ENGINE MOVEMENT. WITH THESE WE'LL NEVER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT BLOWING OFF A SILICONE COUPLER UNDER HIGH BOOST AGAIN. THE COMPRESSOR DISCHARGE NEEDS TO BE CLOCKED TO LINE UP PROPERLY WITH THE DRIVER'S SIDE TUBE, AND IT'S AN EASY FIX. JUST LOOSEN UP THE BOLTS, AND TWIST THE HOUSING, LINE UP THE CLAMP...
...AND TIGHTEN EVERYTHING BACK UP. NEXT OUR NEW COOLANT TANK WILL GO ON THE PASSENGER SIDE FENDER. THE NEW RADIATOR TUBE SLIPS INTO PLACE...
...AND THE FOUR INCH HIGH FLOW TURBO INLET ATTACHES, AND THE CLEANABLE NONOILED FILTER SEALS THE DEAL. ONE OF THE LAST THINGS WE NEED TO INSTALL IS A FEED LINE TO GET OIL FROM THE ENGINE UP INTO THE TURBO CHARGER. NO FROM THE FACTORY THE DURAMAX TURBO GETS OIL THROUGH THE VALLEY OF THE BLOCK BY THE SUPPORT RIGHT ABOVE A CAM BEARING. SO IF ANYTHING WERE TO EVER HAPPEN INSIDE THAT ENGINE AND THAT BEARING WERE TO SPIN THE TURBO WILL BE CUT OFF FROM OIL AND WOULD GET DAMAGED AS WELL. SO TO PREVENT THAT FROM HAPPENING SDP PROVIDES THIS NEW LONGER OIL FEED LINE THAT GRABS OIL FROM THE SIDE OF THE BLOCK DOWN BY THE OIL FILTER. SO NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS INSIDE YOUR ENGINE THE TURBO WILL ALWAYS RECEIVE FRESH OIL AND IT WON'T GET DAMAGED. WITH THE AN FITTING SECURED, THIS TURBO KIT IS DONE.
MANY VEHICLES COME FROM THE FACTORY WITH A TURBO CHARGER, AND IN THE AFTERMARKET WORLD IT'S COMMON PRACTICE TO ADD OR UPGRADE AN EXISTING TURBO LIKE WE'VE DONE ON OUR LBSEVEN DURAMAX SPORT TRUCK. NOW IN THE WORLD OF FORCED INDUCTION THERE A TON OF OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM YOU CAN HAVE A CENTRIFUGAL, ROOTS STYLE, OR A TWIN SCREW SUPER CHARGER, BUT LATELY THE TURBO CHARGER HAS GAINED POPULARITY AND IT'S QUICKLY BECOME THE GOTO OPTION FOR GUYS WANTING A WHOLE BUNCH OF POWER, BUT NOT EVERYBODY KNOWS HOW THEY WORK OR WHAT'S INSIDE. ONE OF THE REASONS WHY TURBO CHARGERS ARE SO POPULAR IS BECAUSE THEY USE FREE ENERGY TO DRIVE THEM, RATHER THAN ROBBING POWER FROM THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE WITH A BELT LIKE A SUPERCHARGER. PLUS THERE'S NO BELT TO SLIP. HOT EXHAUST GASES LEAVE THE ENGINE AND ENTER THE TURBINE HOUSING WHERE A TURBINE WHEEL IS SPUN, AND THE SPENT EXHAUST GASES EXIT THE TRUCK. ON THE OTHER SIDE A COMPRESSOR WHEEL DRAWS IN AIR FROM THE ATMOSPHERE AND FORCES IT INTO THE ENGINE. THE TURBINE WHEEL AND COMPRESSOR ARE CONNECTED BY A SHAFT THAT RIDES ON A HIGH SPEED BEARING OR BUSHINGS. SOME TURBOS CAN SPIN AS FAST AS 100,000 RPM. WITH THE BASICS EXPLAINED, LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT A REAL WORLD EXAMPLE. THIS IS A TURBO THAT WE PULLED FROM OUR LBSEVEN DURAMAX, AND THE HOUSINGS MAY LOOK A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT FROM YOUR STANDARD AFTERMARKET TURBO, BUT THE PRINCIPLES ARE EXACTLY THE SAME. FIRST OF ALL IT'S SUPER EASY TO TELL WHICH SIDE IS WHICH JUST BY LOOKING AT IT. THE TURBINE, OR EXHAUST SIDE, IS USUALLY MADE FROM CAST IRON, OR IN SOME CASES STAINLESS STEEL, AND IT WILL BE RUSTED OR DISCOLORED FROM THE HEAT OF THE EXHAUST. THE COMPRESSOR HOUSING IS NEARLY ALWAYS MADE FROM ALUMINUM SINCE THERE IS VERY LITTLE HEAT FOR IT TO DEAL WITH. THE CENTER OF THE TURBO IS REFERRED TO AS A CARTRIDGE, AND THIS IS WHERE THE BEARINGS SIT AND THE SHAFT GETS LUBRICATED AND COOLED. PRESSURIZED OIL FROM THE ENGINE ENTERS THE TURBO FROM THE TOP AND GRAVITY DRAINS OUT THE BOTTOM. WHEN MOUNTING YOUR TURBO IT'S CRITICAL THAT THE OIL DRAIN BE FACING STRAIGHT DOWN. IF IT'S JUST A LITTLE BIT OFF THE OIL WON'T DRAIN PROPERLY, AND IT CAN PUSH PAST THE SEALS AND CAUSE SMOKE. ON SOME TURBOS LIKE THIS ONE THERE ARE TWO ADDITIONAL PORTS IN THE SIDE OF THE CARTRIDGE. NOW ENGINE COOLING CAN CIRCULATE THROUGH THESE AND IT'LL PULL ADDITIONAL HEAT AWAY FROM THE BEARINGS, KEEPING EVERYTHING NICE AND HAPPY. A WASTE GATE'S FUNCTION IS TO CONTROL BOOST LEVEL. NOW THIS ONE IS INTERNAL TO THE EXHAUST HOUSING, AND IT'S CONTROLLED BY A DIAPHRAGM WITH SPRINGS INSIDE, AND IT USES A BOOST REFERENCE. BASICALLY IF YOUR BOOST IS TOO HIGH THE WASTE GATE IS GONNA OPEN UP AND IT'LL BYPASS EXHAUST AROUND THE TURBINE. IT'LL SLOW DOWN AND YOUR BOOST LEVEL WILL GO DOWN WITH IT. OR IF YOUR BOOST IS TOO LOW, THE GATE STAYS SHUT AND THE BOOST LEVEL WILL RAISE. NOW WE'RE REALLY JUST SCRATCHING THE SURFACE BUT NOW YOU KNOW JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT TURBO CHARGERS.
