(MIKE)>> WELCOME TO ENGINE POWER. TODAY WE'RE FINISHING UP THE FRS AND TAKING IT BACK TO THE NATIONAL CORVETTE MUSEUM ROAD COURSE. NOW THIS CAR HAS CHANGED IN A LOT OF WAYS. IT'S MAKING 97 MORE HORSEPOWER AT THE REAR TIRES, HAS A MASSIVE BAER BRAKE KIT ON IT, HOOKER EXHAUST, AND SEVERAL ADJUSTABLE SUSPENSION COMPONENTS FROM THE FT 86 SPEED FACTORY.
(PAT)>> NOW IT'S TIME TO GIVE IT THE FINAL TOUCHES FOR TRACK DAY STATUS, AND THAT WILL INCLUDE NEW WHEELS AND TIRES, SETTING UP THE COIL OVERS, AND GOING OVER ALL THE FASTENERS, FLUID LEVELS, AND SYSTEMS ON THE CAR.
(MIKE)>> SETTING UP THE COIL OVERS IS NOT A ONE SHOT ADJUSTMENT. THERE ARE SEVERAL FACTORS INVOLVED, LIKE THE SIZE OF THE TIRE, HOW MUCH CLEARANCE IT HAS IN THE WHEEL WELL, AND THE AMOUNT OF GROUND CLEARANCE THE CAR HAS. NOW THEY ALL PLAY A ROLE. NOW THE FIRST THING WE NEED TO DO WITH THIS STYLE OF COIL OVER IS SET THE SPRING'S PRELOAD. THEN WE'LL SET THE RIDE HEIGHT. NOW AS FAR AS REBOUND AND COMPRESSION GO, THOSE WILL BE SET OUT AT THE TRACK. LET'S GET STARTED. SETTING THE PRELOAD IS DONE BY ROTATING THE SPRING ADJUSTOR TO PUT MORE TENSION ON THE SPRING. IF THIS IS NOT DONE THE SPRINGS WILL MAKE UNWANTED NOISES LIKE POPPING WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL DUE TO BINDING OR SPRING ROTATION. SIMPLY TIGHTEN THE ADJUSTOR UNTIL THE SPRING HAS QUITE A BIT OF ROTATING TENSION BUT IS NOT UNABLE TO ROTATE. IF IT'S NOT ENOUGH PRELOAD YOU'LL STILL HAVE NOISE WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED. JUST ADD MORE TO GET RID OF IT.
(PAT)>> RIDE HEIGHT IS ADJUSTED BY ROTATING THE BOTTOM MOUNT UP OR DOWN ON THE SHOCK BODY. NOW THIS IS INDEPENDENT OF SPRING PRELOAD, AND DUE TO THE FACT THAT THESE ARE ALREADY INSTALLED ON THE VEHICLE, HERE'S A QUICK WAY TO MAKE THAT ADJUSTMENT. WITH THE SWAY BAR LINK DETACHED AND THE TWO SPINDLE BOLTS LOOSENED AND REMOVED, LET THE SPINDLE DROP DOWN. SIMPLY ROTATE THE LOWER MOUNT CLOCKWISE TO LOWER THE CAR. THESE SAME STEPS WILL BE DONE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE. REMEMBER THIS IS JUST A ROUGH SETUP. WE TOOK A MEASUREMENT WITH THE FACTORY WHEELS AND TIRES AND HAVE A ROUGH IDEA OF WHERE WE NEED TO BE ON RIDE HEIGHT. THIS SIDE NEEDS TO BE LOWERED ABOUT THREE QUARTERS OF AN INCH.
(MIKE)>> THE REARS ARE DONE THE SAME WAY. WITH THE PRELOAD SET AND THE SWAY BAR END LINK AND COIL OVER DETACHED, THE BOTTOM BRACKET IS TURNED COUNTER CLOCKWISE TO RAISE THE REAR OF THE CAR, WHICH IS WHAT WE NEED TO DO.
(PAT)>> OUR SCION NEEDS A WHEEL THAT CAN HANDLE THE DEMANDS OF BOTH HEAVY TRACK DAYS AND EVERYDAY STREET DRIVING, AND THAT'S WHY WE CHOSE THE ENKEI WHEELS, AND FOR A FEW DIFFERENT REASONS. THIS IS THEIR "RAGIN'". NOW ASIDE FROM ITS OBVIOUS GOOD LOOKS THERE IS A TON OF ENGINEERING THAT GOES INTO THIS RACE INSPIRED WHEEL DESIGN. ENKEI USES MAT DURAFLOW FORMING TO MAKE A WHEEL THAT'S STRONG YET LIGHTWEIGHT, WHICH ENHANCES ITS STRAIGHT TO WEIGHT RATIO, AND THIS MANUFACTURING PROCESS ALLOWS THEM TO MAKE NEAR INFINITE STYLES AND SHAPES, AND THEIR SUPERIOR CRAFTSMANSHIP IS CLEARLY EVIDENT WHEN YOU HANDLE THEM, FINDING NO SHARP EDGES AND SEEING THEIR PREMIUM FINISH. NOW THESE ARE 18 BY NINE AND A HALVES, AND THEY'LL GO ON ALL FOUR CORNERS.
(MIKE)>> WRAPPED AROUND THOSE AWESOME WHEELS ARE MAXXIS VICTRA VR ONE ULTRA HIGH PERFORMANCE TIRES. NOW THESE ARE EXTREME SUMMER TIRES WITH A NEW COMPOUND THAT REACHES OPERATING TEMPERATURE QUICKLY AND PROVIDES EXCELLENT DRY TRACTION. NOW THEY HAVE A NEW PATTERN DESIGN THAT MAXIMIZES DRY PERFORMANCE AND MINIMIZES THOSE WHITE KNUCKLE MOMENTS IN WET WEATHER. NOW A NEW REENFORCED CASING AND SIDE WALL DESIGN PROVIDE A TELEPATHIC RESPONSE FOR THE ULTIMATE DRIVING EXPERIENCE. THE TREAD WEAR RATING IS 200. OUR GOAL IS TO HAVE AN AGGRESSIVE LOOK AND EXCELLENT HANDLING. 265/35 18'S WILL ACCOMPLISH THAT.
(PAT)>> THE RIDE HEIGHT HAS BEEN SET, AND WE DID HAVE TO MAKE A FEW MORE ADJUSTMENTS TO THE COIL OVERS ALL THE WAY AROUND TO GET IT RIGHT. NOW WE ARE GONNA WEIGH THE CAR TO SEE HOW IT SCALES OUT AS FAR AS FRONT TO BACK BIAS AND CROSS WEIGHT. WE'LL USE OUR INTERCOMP QUICK WEIGH SET THAT IS WIRELESS. THEY'RE PLACED UNDER EACH WHEEL ON THEIR ASSIGNED CORNER.
(MIKE)>> WE'RE INTERESTED IN A FEW THINGS. ONE IS THE TOTAL WEIGHT OF THE CAR, WHICH IS 2,792 POUNDS. FACTORY WEIGHT WAS 2,760. SO WE GAINED 32 POUNDS WITH THE BIGGER WHEELS AND TIRES, BRAKES, SUPERCHARGER, AND ALL THE SUSPENSION COMPONENTS. SECOND WE WANT TO SEE WHAT THE CROSS WEIGHT OF THE CAR IS PERCENTAGE WISE. FROM THE LEFT FRONT TO THE RIGHT REAR WE'RE SHOWING 49.14 PERCENT. FROM THE RIGHT FRONT TO THE LEFT REAR IT'S 50.86, SHOWING THAT THIS CAR IS REALLY, REALLY BALANCED. NOW THE LAST THING WE'RE GONNA LOOK AT IS THE ACTUAL LEFT TO RIGHT SIDE. 50 PERCENT ON THE MONEY ON THE SCALES THE FIRST TIME. IT DOESN'T GET MUCH BETTER THAN THAT. NOW PAT'S GONNA GET IN THE CAR SO WE CAN CHECK THE CROSS WEIGHT WITH A DRIVER IN IT LIKE IT WOULD BE OUT ON THE RACE TRACK. NOW THE CROSS WEIGHT FROM LEFT FRONT TO RIGHT REAR SHOWS 49.8 PERCENT, AND FROM THE RIGHT FRONT TO THE LEFT REAR IT SHOWS 50.20 PERCENT, STILL REALLY WELL BALANCED. THIS IS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF WHY SO MANY AFTERMARKET COMPANIES ARE MAKING AWESOME PARTS FOR THIS CAR. IT IS A PERFORMANCE MACHINE. WELL THE SUN DIDN'T STAY OUT AND THE TRACK TEMPERATURES NEVER CAME UP. THANKS WEATHER MAN! NOW ONE THING WE ARE IMPRESSED ABOUT ARE THE MAXXIS VICTRA TIRES WE'VE BEEN RUNNING TODAY. THESE THINGS ARE REALLY IMPRESSIVE EVEN IN THIS COLD WEATHER. SO WE'RE GONNA GIVE IT A SHOT AND MOVE UP TO THEIR RACE TIRE. NOW THIS IS A DOT APPROVED "R" COMPOUND THAT IS NAME THE VICTRA RC ONE. NOW WE'RE GONNA GO AHEAD AND BOLT THEM ON, TAKE THEM OUT ON THE TRACK, AND GET THEM SCRUBBED DOWN. AFTER A FEW SCRUB IN LAPS THESE RC ONES ARE COMING AROUND, EVEN IN THE COLD, AND THE VBOX PROVES IT. ON THE EXHAUST SIDE A SET OF HOOKER BLACKHEART SHORTY HEADERS WERE INSTALLED. THAT LEADS US TO PHASE TWO, WHICH WILL WRAP UP THE EXHAUST SYSTEM ALONG WITH NEW SUSPENSION, A BRAKE UPGRADE, PLUS ALL NEW WHEELS AND TIRES.
(MIKE)>> IN MY BOOK A MODIFIED CORVETTE HAS TO SOUND AGGRESSIVE. RECENTLY PAT AND I HEARD A CSIX CORVETTE WITH ONE OF HOOKER BLACKHEART'S AXLE BACK EXHAUST SYSTEMS, AND THAT TRIGGERED US TO PUT ONE ON THIS CAR. NOW IT'S A THREE INCH STAINLESS STEEL SYSTEM THAT USES A HIGH FLOW STRAIGHT THROUGH MUFFLER. NOW THIS WILL GIVE YOU AN AGGRESSIVE SOUND DURING ACCELERATION AND A NICE MELLOW TONE DURING IDLE. NOW IT HAS FOUR INCH DUAL WALLED STAINLESS STEEL TIPS, AND THIS BIG CAN HERE IS A HELMHOLTZ STYLE RESONATOR THAT HELPS CONTROL INTERIOR RESONANCE. THE EXISTING MUFFLERS ARE NOT FACTORY. WE'RE REMOVING THEM BECAUSE WE WANT A DIFFERENT SOUND. BASICALLY USER PREFERENCE. THE OVER AXLE PIPES GO ON FIRST, ONE FOR THE RIGHT SIDE, ONE FOR THE LEFT. NOW THE FACTORY HANGERS GO ON THE NEW MUFFLERS, AND THE ASSEMBLIES ARE INSTALLED ONE AT A TIME. THIS MUFFLER LOGO PLATE TIES THE TWO MUFFLERS TOGETHER AND ENSURES PROPER ALIGNMENT.

(ALEX)>> WE'RE GOING TO ADJUST THE INJECTOR DATA, AND WE'RE GOING TO ADJUST THE IDLE TO ACCOUNT FOR THE CAM. SINCE YOU HAVE THE CAM PRESENT THE EFFICIENCY OF ENGINE IS GOING TO DROP SOME AT IDLE. SO WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO TAKE SOME FUEL OUT ESSENTIALLY AT IDLE. JUST TO GET THINGS GOING INCREASE THE AIR FLOW AS WELL SO WE CAN GET IT ACTUALLY STARTED UP AND START GETTING SOME DATA TO MAKE MORE ADJUSTMENTS.

THERE ARE SEVERAL FACTORS INVOLVED, LIKE THE SIZE OF THE TIRE, HOW MUCH CLEARANCE IT HAS IN THE WHEEL WELL, AND THE AMOUNT OF GROUND CLEARANCE THE CAR HAS. NOW THEY ALL PLAY A ROLE. NOW THE FIRST THING WE NEED TO DO WITH THIS STYLE OF COIL OVER IS SET THE SPRING'S PRELOAD. THEN WE'LL SET THE RIDE HEIGHT. NOW AS FAR AS REBOUND AND COMPRESSION GO, THOSE WILL BE SET OUT AT THE TRACK. LET'S GET STARTED. SETTING THE PRELOAD IS DONE BY ROTATING THE SPRING ADJUSTOR TO PUT MORE TENSION ON THE SPRING. IF THIS IS NOT DONE THE SPRINGS WILL MAKE UNWANTED NOISES LIKE POPPING WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL DUE TO BINDING OR SPRING ROTATION. SIMPLY TIGHTEN THE ADJUSTOR UNTIL THE SPRING HAS QUITE A BIT OF ROTATING TENSION BUT IS NOT UNABLE TO ROTATE. IF IT'S NOT ENOUGH PRELOAD YOU'LL STILL HAVE NOISE WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED. JUST ADD MORE TO GET RID OF IT.
(PAT)>> RIDE HEIGHT IS ADJUSTED BY ROTATING THE BOTTOM MOUNT UP OR DOWN ON THE SHOCK BODY. NOW THIS IS INDEPENDENT OF SPRING PRELOAD, AND DUE TO THE FACT THAT THESE ARE ALREADY INSTALLED ON THE VEHICLE, HERE'S A QUICK WAY TO MAKE THAT ADJUSTMENT. WITH THE SWAY BAR LINK DETACHED AND THE TWO SPINDLE BOLTS LOOSENED AND REMOVED, LET THE SPINDLE DROP DOWN. SIMPLY ROTATE THE LOWER MOUNT CLOCKWISE TO LOWER THE CAR. THESE SAME STEPS WILL BE DONE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE. REMEMBER THIS IS JUST A ROUGH SETUP. WE TOOK A MEASUREMENT WITH THE FACTORY WHEELS AND TIRES AND HAVE A ROUGH IDEA OF WHERE WE NEED TO BE ON RIDE HEIGHT. THIS SIDE NEEDS TO BE LOWERED ABOUT THREE QUARTERS OF AN INCH.

SO WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO TAKE SOME FUEL OUT ESSENTIALLY AT IDLE. JUST TO GET THINGS GOING INCREASE THE AIR FLOW AS WELL SO WE CAN GET IT ACTUALLY STARTED UP AND START GETTING SOME DATA TO MAKE MORE ADJUSTMENTS.

DEPENDING ON THE MANUFACTURER THE CARDS WILL LOOK DIFFERENT BUT THEY ALL CONVEY THE SAME INFORMATION. THE TERMINOLOGY USED IS INDUSTRY STANDARD IN REGARDS TO THE VALVE'S EVENTS. KEEP MIND THE CAM'S JOB IS TO ACCURATELY OPEN AND CLOSE THE INTAKE AND EXHAUST VALVES IN RELATIONSHIP TO THE CRANK SHAFT'S POSITION. FROM AN ENGINE BUILDER'S POINT OF VIEW THE FIRST NUMBERS WE LOOK AT IS THE DURATION AT 50 THOUSANDTHS LIFT. EVERY CAM CARD WILL HAVE THIS MEASUREMENT NO MATTER THE BRAND. THIS IS HOW WE COMPARE CAM SHAFTS TO ONE ANOTHER BECAUSE THIS IS AN INDUSTRY STANDARD MEASUREMENT. DURATION IS THE AMOUNT OF DEGREES THE VALVE IS OPEN, AND FOR COMPARISON IT'S MEASURED AT 50 THOUSANDTHS VALVE LIFT AS THE VALVE OPENS, AND AT 50 THOUSANDTHS VALVE LIFT BEFORE IT CLOSES. THIS CARD STATES THAT THOSE EVENTS OCCUR A HALF A DEGREE BEFORE TDC, AND 55.5 DEGREES AFTER BDC. HERE'S WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE. ADVERTISED DURATION IS WHAT A LOT OF COMPANIES USE TO MAKE THEIR CAM SEEM BIGGER, BUT YOU CAN'T USE THEM FOR COMPARISON PURPOSES BECAUSE THEY DON'T USE THE SAME VALVE LIFT MEASUREMENTS FOR THE NUMBERS LIKE THE INDUSTRY STANDARD 50 THOUSANDTHS. ADVERTISED DURATION IS MOSTLY USED FOR MARKETING PURPOSES. NEXT UP IS LOBE LIFT, AND IT'S THE PHYSICAL AMOUNT OF LIFT THE LOBE HAS FROM ITS BASE CIRCLE TO ITS NOSE. THIS NUMBER IS COMBINED WITH A ROCKER ARM RATIO TO GIVE YOU THE GROSS VALVE LIFT. KEEP IN MIND THIS MEASUREMENT IS NOT FROM THE BOTTOM TO THE TOP OF A LOBE. IT IS THE TOP OF ITS BASE CIRCLE JUST TO THE NOSE, AND THIS IS WHAT WE USE TO CALCULATE BOTH GROSS AND NET VALVE LIFT. THE LOBE LIFT MULTIPLIED BY THE ROCKER RATIO EQUALS GROSS VALVE LIFT MINUS ANY LASH THAT YOU HAVE, AND THAT EQUALS NET VALVE LIFT. FOR EXAMPLE, OUR CAM CARD SAYS WE HAVE 368 THOUSANDTHS LIFT MULTIPLIED BY ONE POINT SEVEN, WHICH IS OUR ROCKER RATIO, AND THAT EQUALS 625 THOUSANDTHS GROSS VALVE LIFT.
