(NARRATOR)>> TODAY ELIZA AND JEREMY ARE GETTING THEIR OVERLAND SCOUT READY FOR CAMPING. THEY'RE ADDING WATER, AIR, POWER, STORAGE, AND EVEN A FRIDGE. THEN THEY'RE TEARING APART THEIR JK TO GET STARTED ON A NEW PROJECT. IT'S ALL RIGHT HERE ON XOR.
(ELIZA)>> HEY, WELCOME TO XOR. TODAY WE'RE BACK ON OUR OVERLAND SCOUT, AND WE'RE THROWING IN SOME CREATURE COMFORTS INTO THIS BEAST. WHEN YOU'RE CAMPING OR OVERLANDING, ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS IS WATER. SO WE'RE STARTING WITH A WATER STORAGE SYSTEM.
(JEREMY)>> AND THAT ALL STARTS WITH GOOD OLE FASHIONED PVC PIPE. IT'S CHEAP, YOU CAN PICK IT UP AT ANY HARDWARE STORE, AND THE BEST THING ABOUT IT IS YOU DON'T NEED A WELDER TO PUT IT TOGETHER. WE'RE GONNA BE USING SCHEDULED 40 FOUR INCH PVC PIPE. NOW WE WENT AND PICKED UP A BUNCH OF ADAPTERS TO GET THE SYSTEM BUILT. THIS CAP AND "T" IS GONNA ALLOW FOR WATER TO GO INTO THE SYSTEM. THIS CAP IS GONNA BE FOR THE SIDE BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT WATER RUNNING OUT, AND WE PICKED UP SOME OTHER BUSHINGS SO WE CAN PUT A BOILER DRAIN IN AND A HOSE ON TO HELP US GET THE WATER OUT. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, WE'RE GONNA BE INSTALLING AN RV WATER FILTER TO HELP US CLEAN ALL THAT WATER. WE'RE GONNA WANT THE TOTAL LENGTH TO BE ABOUT SEVEN FEET, AND I'M GONNA PUT THE FILL "T" JUST ABOVE THE LIGHTS AT ABOUT FIVE AND A HALF FEET.
LIKE I SAID, PVC IS PRETTY SIMPLE TO WORK WITH, AND WITHOUT A DOUBT THIS IS THE EASIEST JOB OUR SAW BLADE DOT COM CHOP SAW HAS HAD IN A LONG TIME.
[ saw cutting plastic ]
(JEREMY)>> MOST EVERYBODY KNOWS YOU HAVE TO GLUE PVC TOGETHER, AND THAT'S A TWO STEP PROCESS. FIRST IS YOUR PURPLE PVC PRIMER, AND SECOND IS YOUR PVC CLEAR GLUE. THE GLUING PROCESS ACTUALLY GENERATES HEAT, WHICH MAY TRY TO PUSH YOUR TWO PIECES APART. SO IT'S A GOOD IDEA TO KEEP PRESSURE AGAINST THE TWO PIECES FOR A COUPLE OF SECONDS. THE PRIMING AND GLUING PROCESS IS SOMETHING THAT YOU WILL HAVE TO DO A LOT IN A PROJECT LIKE THIS.
THE THREADED COUPLER AND CAP WILL ALLOW US TO GET WATER INTO THE SYSTEM. BUT REMEMBER, OPEN THE CAP WHEN YOU START TAKING WATER OUT OF THE SYSTEM BECAUSE IT'S GONNA CREATE A VACUUM AND YOU MAY NOT GET MUCH WATER OUT IF YOU DON'T. THE OVERALL LENGTH OF OUR SYSTEM IS ROUGHLY SEVEN FEET. AT A DIAMETER OF FOUR INCHES, THAT MEANS WE'LL BE ABLE TO STORE ABOUT FOUR AND A HALF GALLONS OF WATER, BUT BY GOING WITH SIX INCH PVC THE SAME LENGTH SYSTEM WOULD ALLOW YOU TO HAVE OVER 10 GALLONS OF WATER.
THEY MAKE ALL SORTS OF REDUCERS AND BUSHINGS FOR PVC PIPE. WE JUST CHOSE TO GO WITH THIS SETUP SO WE COULD RUN A SIMPLE BOILER DRAIN.
WITH OUR SYSTEM ASSEMBLED AND GLUE CURED, PREPPING IT FOR PAINT IS ALSO A TWO PART PROCESS. FIRST WE'LL TAKE 220 GRIT SAND PAPER AND SAND OFF THE OUTER MILDEW RESISTANT COATING BECAUSE PAINT WILL NOT ADHERE TO THAT VERY WELL.
AND SECOND WE'LL USE ACETONE. NOT ONLY DOES IT REMOVE THE SANDING DUST, BUT AS IT DRIES IT WILL OPEN THE PORES OF THE PLASTIC FOR BETTER ADHESION FOR THE PAINT, BUT BE SURE TO USE SAFETY GLOVES TO KEEP THE ACETONE OFF YOUR SKIN.
NOW ACETONE WILL EVAPORATE PRETTY QUICKLY. SO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PLENTY ON HAND WHEN CLEANING YOUR PROJECT.
AND WHEN YOU'RE ALL DONE, MAKE SURE AND ALLOW YOUR PROJECT TO DRY FOR AT LEAST 30 MINUTES. IT'S VERY IMPORTANT WHEN PAINTING PVC TO USE PAINT DESIGNED FOR PLASTIC. WE'RE USING DUPLICOLOR'S VINYL AND FABRIC SPECIALTY COATING SPRAY PAINT. FIRST A LIGHT TACK COAT GOES DOWN.
THE SECOND COAT GOES ON 10 MINUTES LATER, AND THIS TIME YOU CAN PUT IT ON A LITTLE HEAVIER FOR SOME GOOD COVERAGE.
WE'RE GONNA BE INSTALLING OUR WATER SYSTEM IN A PRETTY SIMPLE WAY BECAUSE WE MAY WANT TO TAKE IT ALL DOWN WHEN WE'RE NOT USING IT. SCOOCH IN THERE A LITTLE BIT, MOVE FORWARD. YEP, SOMEWHERE AROUND THERE.
(ELIZA)>> AWESOME!
(JEREMY)>> WHEN INSTALLING YOUR BOILER DRAIN DON'T FORGET TO ADD A LITTLE PIPE THREAD SEALANT, AND THE VERY LAST STEP IS TO INSTALL YOUR RV WATER FILTER.
NOW IT'S AS SIMPLE AS THAT, AND BY PAINTING IT BLACK IT RETAINS SOME HEAT FROM THE SUN. SO YOU MIGHT HAVE WARM WATER WHEN YOU'RE READY TO CLEAN UP AT THE END OF THOSE DUSTY TRAILS.
(NARRATOR)>> UP NEXT, WE'LL GET THE REST OF OUR CREATURE COMFORTS INSTALLED, AND LATER WE'RE RIPPING APART OUR JK.
(JEREMY)>> HEY GUYS, WELCOME BACK TO XOR. NOW THAT WE'VE GOT THE WATER STORAGE SYSTEM DONE UP TOP WE'VE GOT A LOT MORE ROOM IN THE BACK OF THE SCOUT. SO WE'RE GONNA GO AHEAD AND ADD A COUPLE MORE CREATURE COMFORTS.
(ELIZA)>> NOW THAT WE'VE GOT ONBOARD WATER IN OUR RIG WE NEED TO GET ON BOARD AIR AND ON BOARD POWER. SO WE WENT DOWN TO SEE OUR BUDDIES AT TRACTOR SUPPLY AND PICKED UP AN INVERTER. THIS TRAVELER 3,000 WATT INVERTER HAS A PEAK OUTPUT OF 6,000 WATTS, HAS THREE OUTLETS, AND ONE USB PORT. NOW TO POWER UP OUR INVERTER OUR BUDDIES DOWN AT OPTIMA SENT US THEIR BLUE TOP MARINE DEEP CYCLE BATTERY. NOW WE'RE GONNA TIE THIS INTO OUR SCOUT'S RED TOP SO THAT THAT WAY WE HAVE ENOUGH POWER WHETHER THE ENGINE'S ON OR OFF. WELL NOW THAT WE'VE GOT A PLAN FOR OUR RIG LET'S START WITH ONBOARD AIR.
(JEREMY)>> THANK YOU!
(ELIZA)>> YOU'RE WELCOME!
(JEREMY)>> I WANT TO SEE WHERE THIS FITS.
THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE TO GETTING OUR COMPRESSOR MOUNTED IS THAT THE BOLTS GO THROUGH THE INNER QUARTER. SO WE HAVE TO REACH ALL THE WAY UP THROUGH THE INNER WHEEL WELL TO GET THEM STARTED.
(ELIZA)>> OKAY, DRILL BIT, YOU SEE IT?
(JEREMY)>> YEP, I SEE IT.
(ELIZA)>> OKAY!
THERE IT IS. OKAY, TIGHTEN.
(JEREMY)>> IT'S DEFINITELY A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE AN EXTRA SET OF HANDS TO GET THIS DONE.
THAT'S ABOUT WHERE WE WANT IT. WE'RE REPLACING ONE OF OUR BOLTS THAT HOLDS DOWN THE ROLL CAGE WITH A SPECIAL BOLT THAT WE WELDED A WASHER TO, TO HELP US HOLD DOWN OUR BATTERY.
WE TOOK SPECIAL CARE WHEN MARKING AND DRILLING THIS HOLE BECAUSE OUR FUEL FILLER NECK IS ON THIS SIDE, AND WE DEFINITELY DIDN'T WANT TO DRILL INTO IT.
ALL RIGHT ELIZA, GO AHEAD. ALL RIGHT, GOOD, PERFECT! WE'RE USING A RATCHET STRAP TO HOLD OUR BATTERY DOWN. THAT WAY IF THE BATTERY SHIFTS IT WON'T GROUND OUT AGAINST THE NYLON STRAP.
I PUT OUR INVERTER ON. WE'RE ACTUALLY GONNA UTILIZE A HOLE THAT'S ALREADY IN THE SIDE PANEL HERE. SO WE'RE JUST GONNA STRAIGHTEN THAT UP. MAKE SURE THAT STAYS THERE. THEN I'LL MARK THE BOTTOM SO WE CAN HANG IT DIRECTLY OFF THE BOTTOM. [ drill spinning ]
(JEREMY)>> PERFECT! TO POWER UP OUR INVERTER WE HAVE FOUR CONNECTIONS, TWO POWER CONNECTIONS AND TWO GROUND CONNECTIONS.
OUR DEEP CYCLE OPTIMA BATTERY HAS TWO THREADED POSTS. SO MAKING THE CONNECTIONS ARE PRETTY SIMPLE.
AND WE'LL ADD A LITTLE EXTRA SECURITY BY ADDING TWO RUBBER INSULATORS ON TOP OF THE POST. LET'S SEE IF IT WORKS. [ beep ]
(JEREMY)>> THERE YOU GO.
(ELIZA)>> NOW WITH THE POWER AND AIR INSTALLED INTO THE SCOUT WE DECIDED THAT WE NEEDED TO ADDRESS STORAGE. SO WE WENT OVER TO ROCK AUTO DOT COM AND PICKED OUT THE WESTIN BRUTE.
SO WE'RE GONNA NEED A LOT OF SPACE WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO OUR TRAIL GEAR, TOOLS, AND CAMPING STUFF, AND I THINK THIS WILL WORK JUST PERFECTLY.
(JEREMY)>> THAT SHOULD FIT PERFECTLY.
(ELIZA)>> IT SHOULD.
(JEREMY)>> FITS PERFECT.
(ELIZA)>> YEAH IT DOES, LOOKS GOOD!
[ drill spinning ]
(JEREMY)>> WE'RE USING THE BRACKETS SUPPLIED IN THE KIT, BUT WE'RE USING AN OVERSIZED NUT AS A SPACER TO HELP HOLD EVERYTHING DOWN.
(ELIZA)>> ALL RIGHT, WITH ALL THE ESSENTIALS IN PLACE WE NOW HAVE ROOM FOR A LITTLE BIT OF LUXURY. THAT AC/DC FREEZER FRIDGE COMBO IS THE PERFECT THING TO KEEP OUR COLD ONES COLD.
(JEREMY)>> WE HAD TO CHOOSE OUR MOUNTING LOCATION CAREFULLY CAUSE WE WANTED TO HIT ONE OF THE SUPPORTS THAT'S INSIDE THE STORAGE SYSTEM ITSELF.
[ drill spinning ]
(JEREMY)>> JUST LIKE WITH THE BATTERY, WE'RE USING A BOLT WITH A WASHER WELDED ON TOP OF IT BECAUSE IT WORKS GREAT FOR OUR TIE DOWNS.
(NARRATOR)>> WHEN WE COME BACK WE'LL GET STARTED ON PROJECT "CREEP IT REAL", STAY TUNED!
(JEREMY)>> HEY GUYS, WELCOME BACK TO XOR. NOW WE HAD A LOT OF FUN WORKING ON OUR OVERLAND SCOUT, BUT IT'S TIME TO START ROCKING ON OUR JK ROCK CRAWLER. SO LET'S TAKE ALL THE BIG PIECES OFF.
(ELIZA)>> LET'S DO IT!
READY?
(JEREMY)>> HEY!
[ drill spinning ]
(JEREMY)>> OH!
(ELIZA)>> CUT YOURSELF?
(JEREMY)>> LOOK AT THAT, LOOK AT THAT ONE! THAT'S A GOOD ONE! OH THAT'S GONNA BLEED! IT'S ALL PART OF THE JOB. GLOVES, NOW WE'LL PUT GLOVES ON. SO THERE'S A RIGHT WAY AND A WRONG WAY TO DO THIS. WE'RE JUST GONNA DO IT THE WRONG WAY, WHICH IS THE FASTER WAY. LIKE THAT!
(ELIZA)>> YEAH, I TOOK MY TIME TAKING MY OFF WITH CLIPS AND ALL.
(JEREMY)>> SORRY!
(ELIZA)>> THERE YOU GO!
(JEREMY)>> TAKE THAT!
(ELIZA)>> THERE WE GO!
I CAN SEE THE LONGEST BOLT EVER.
(JEREMY)>> AH, TAKE THAT!
(ELIZA)>> OH, THE EASE OF POWER TOOLS.
GET THESE OUT!
WE'RE NOT DONE YET, BUT IF YOU WANT ANYMORE INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT YOU'VE SEEN ON TODAY'S SHOW SO FAR HEAD ON OVER TO POWERNATION TV DOT COM.
(NARRATOR)>> AFTER THE BREAK WE'LL CUT THE ROLL CAGE OFF OUR JK, STICK AROUND!
(JEREMY)>> NOW SINCE THE ROLL CAGE, IT'S ACTUALLY BOLTED IN UP FRONT HERE DOWN IN THE LOWER AREA, BUT THEY HAVE IT WELDED BACK HERE. SO WE'RE JUST GONNA GO AHEAD AND CUT THE CAGE OFF ITSELF. THEN WE'LL COME BACK AND GET RID OF WHAT WE CAN OR WHAT WE DON'T NEED CAUSE WE'RE GONNA BUILD OUR OWN CAGE ALL AROUND HERE SOMEWHERE. [ torch cutting metal ]
(JEREMY)>> WOO, MY SIDE CAME!
(ELIZA)>> THERE IT IS!
(JEREMY)>> UP AND BACKWARDS.
TADA!
(ELIZA)>> YES!
(JEREMY)>> ONE USED ROLL CAGE.
(ELIZA)>> OH THAT LOOKS CRAZY! I LIKE IT! I THINK IT'S GONNA LOOK VERY, VERY DIFFERENT. OH YEAH, HOT TUB! HOT TUB!
(JEREMY)>> HEY GUYS, I THOUGHT WE'D TAKE A COUPLE OF MINUTES TO TALK ABOUT TIRES, AND THE SPECIFIC APPLICATION FOR THE TIRES, LIKE A TIRE THAT'S GOOD FOR THE ROCKS, OR A TIRE THAT'S GOOD FOR THE SNOW AND THE MUD AND THE SAND. I'VE GOT A TIRE THAT'S MORE OF AN ALL TERRAIN STYLE TIRE. A TIRE THAT'S ONLY FOR TRAILER USE, AND A GOOD HIGHWAY TREAD STYLE TIRE. WE'RE EVEN GOING TO SHOW YOU HOW TO REPAIR ONE WITHOUT TAKING IT OFF THE RIM. FIRST IS YOUR HIGHWAY TREAD STYLE TIRE. NOW THIS HAS MORE A STRAIGHT GROOVE, AND THAT'S JUST TO DISPERSE THE WATER CAUSE THAT'S REALLY ALL THIS IS USED FOR IS JUST BEING ON THE ROAD AND GETTING RID OF THE RAINWATER THAT'S ON THE ROAD ITSELF. PLUS YOU'VE GOT TO LOOK AT THE CONDITION OF THE TIRE. IT'S GOT WEATHER CRACKING INSIDE OF HERE, WHICH MEANS THAT THE U/V RAYS HAVE ACTUALLY BROKE DOWN THE COMPOSITION OF THE TIRE. SO THIS TIRE WE SHOULD DEFINITELY THROW AWAY. AND UP NEXT IS A TRAILER STYLE TIRE. NOW THIS IS FOR TRAILERS ONLY. THIS IS NOT MADE TO BE A DRIVE TIRE OR A STEER TIRE. THIS IS MADE FOR A HIGH LOAD CAPACITY, LIKE YOU WOULD HAVE ON YOUR TRAILERS. THE TREAD DESIGN IS PRETTY SIMPLE. JUST KIND OF LIKE YOUR HIGHWAY TIRE, STRAIGHT THROUGH JUST TO GET RID OF MOST OF THAT RAIN WATER. OTHERWISE THESE ARE GREAT TIRES, BUT THEY'RE ONLY DESIGNED FOR YOUR TRAILERS. NEXT IS AN ALL TERRAIN STYLE TIRE. NOW THESE ARE GOOD FOR YOU WEEKEND WARRIOR GUYS OUT THERE. THEY CAN GO THROUGH THE SAND, THROUGH THE MUD, THROUGH THE DIRT AND ROCKS. THEY CLEAN OUT EASILY, WHICH MEANS WHEN YOU'RE SPINNING YOUR TIRES IT'S ACTUALLY THROWING ALL THE STUFF AWAY FROM THEM, AND THE GOOD THING ABOUT THEM IS THAT THEY'RE REASONABLY PRICED. THEY'RE FOUND ON MOST TRUCKS AND SUV'S, AND A LOT OF YOU GUYS OUT THERE ARE RUNNING THEM, AND NEXT WE HAVE A MUD AND SAND STYLE TIRE. NOW THIS HAS REALLY DEEP GROOVES THAT ARE SPACED FAR APART. THAT'S SO WHEN YOU'RE TIRES ARE SPINNING IT'S REALLY THROWING THE STUFF OUT OF YOUR WAY. THIS IS ALSO A DIRECTIONAL STYLE TIRE. SO IT'S ONLY MADE TO SPIN IN ONE DIRECTION. SO IF YOU MOUNT THIS UP BACKWARDS IT ISN'T GONNA PERFORM AS GOOD AS IT SHOULD. AND LASTLY WE HAVE A ROCK CRAWLING TIRE. NOW THESE HAVE REALLY DEEP TREADS THAT ARE SPACED REALLY FAR APART, AND THE TREAD COMES AROUND THE SIDE. SO WHEN YOU GET INTO STICKY SITUATIONS YOU CAN GET YOUR SELF OUT. THEY ALSO ALLOW YOU TO AIR DOWN BECAUSE THEY HAVE A REALLY HEAVY SIDEWALL. NOW THAT MEANS YOU COULD LET SOME OF THE AIR OUT OF THE TIRE AND ACTUALLY MAKE YOUR TREAD PATTERN WIDER, AND THAT WILL HELP YOU WHEN YOU NEED IT. REPAIRING THE TIRE ON THE RIM IS PRETTY SIMPLE. FIRST YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE OBJECT THAT PUNCTURED THE TIRE. SECONDLY USE THE REAMING TOOL TO MAKE THE HOLE LARGE ENOUGH TO ACCEPT THE PLUG, AND LASTLY INSTALL THE RUBBER PLUG INTO THE EYELET ON THE TOOL AND FORCE THE PLUG INTO THE TIRE. ONCE THE PLUG IS SEATED JUST QUICKLY REMOVE THE TOOL AND YOU'RE REPAIR IS COMPLETE.
(ELIZA)>> SO I HAVE JOE FROM LINCOLN ELECTRIC HERE, AND WHEN I STARTED WELDING I STARTED WELDING ON A STICK WELDER, AND MAKING THAT TRANSITION OVER TO MIG WELDING, WELL THE HARDEST PART WAS THE SETTINGS. IT WAS TWO BUTTONS AND YOU JUST KINDA DIDN'T GET ANY FEEDBACK FROM THE MACHINE AS TO WHERE YOU NEEDED TO BE. I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU GUYS HAVE SIMPLIFIED THAT PROCESS. CAN YOU TELL ME A BIT ABOUT IT?
(JOE)>> YEP, SO WHAT WE HAVE HERE IS A POWER MIG 210 MP, AND IT HAS A DIGITAL DISPLAY. WHAT I'D LIKE TO SHOW YOU GUYS IS THE READY, SET, WELD FEATURE. SO WE'RE GONNA SELECT MIG STEEL C-25. GO AHEAD AND CONFIRM OUT GAS MIX, WHICH IS 75 PERCENT ARGON AND 25 PERCENT COTWO. SELECT OUR WIRE DIAMETER, WHICH IS POINT ZEROTHREEZERO, AND NOW WE'RE GONNA SELECT OUR THICKNESS. NOW THIS DISPLAY IS TO SCALE, AND WE'RE WELDING WITH 10 GAUGE. NOW WE'RE READY TO WELD.
[ welder crackling ]
(ELIZA)>> OH WOW, THAT WAS SETUP PERFECT.
(JOE)>> THAT'S EXACTLY HOW WE DESIGNED IT.
(ELIZA)>> AWESOME, SO I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS NOT JUST A MIG. WHAT ELSE ARE WE GETTING?
(JOE)>> CORRECT, IF YOU SCROLL OVER WE CAN SEE YOU CAN MANUAL CV, FLUX CORE. WITH THE ADDITION OF A SPOOL GUN YOU COULD SPOOL GUN ALUMINUM. OBVIOUSLY YOU CAN STICK WELD, AND WITH ADDITIONAL ACCESSORIES YOU CAN ALSO TIG WELD.
(ELIZA)>> WE'VE BEEN USING 120 HOUSEHOLD OUTLET, BUT THIS IS SET UP FOR BOTH RIGHT?
(JOE)>> CORRECT, YEAH, THIS IS A DUAL INPUT VOLTAGE MACHINE. SO WE CAN RUN ON 120 OR WE CAN RUN ON 230.
(ELIZA)>> AWESOME, SO WHAT ARE THE OUTPUT RANGES FOR BOTH SETTINGS?
(JOE)>> SURE, SO ON 120 VOLTS YOU CAN GO UP TO 140 AMPS, AND THEN ON 230 VOLTS YOU COULD WELD UP TO 220 AMPS.
(ELIZA)>> WOW, THAT'S GREAT! WELL THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE EQUIPMENT AND THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR COMING DOWN OVER HERE TO SHOW US HOW TO USE IT.
(JOE)>> THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING ME!
