(NARRATOR)>> TODAY ELIZA AND JEREMY ARE BUILDING AND INSTALLING A ROLL CAGE IN OUR OVERLAND SCOUT PROJECT. THEN THEY'RE TAKING A UNIQUE AND BUDGET FRIENDLY APPROACH TO PAINTING THEIR RANGER PRERUNNER PROJECT, AND WE'LL SHOW YOU THE BEST WAY TO GET A HIGH QUALITY FINISH USING SPRAY PAINT. IT'S ALL TODAY ON XOR.
(JEREMY)>> HEY GUYS, WELCOME TO XOR. TODAY WE'RE BACK ON OUR OVERLAND SCOUT PROJECT, AND EVEN THOUGH THIS THING ISN'T GONNA SEE THE CRAZIEST OF TRAILS, WE'RE STILL THINKING ABOUT SAFETY. SO WE'RE GONNA BE INSTALLING A ROLL CAGE. THE COOL THING ABOUT THE ROLL CAGE WE'RE GONNA PUT IN IS THAT IT FITS UNDERNEATH THE OE TOP AND THE INSTALL IS A WHOLE LOT EASIER THAN YOU THINK. NOW ODDS ARE HARDLY ANYBODY HAS A TUBE BENDER AT HOME, MYSELF INCLUDED. WELL THE GUYS OVER AT DNC EXTREME HAVE THIS GREAT KIT THAT FITS PERFECTLY INTO OUR SCOUT. NOW THIS KIT BOLTS AND WELDS IN. SO ALL YOU NEED IS A LITTLE BIT OF TIME AND A GOOD WELDER.
(ELIZA)>> THE FIRST STEP IS TO REMOVE THE FRONT TWO BODY MOUNT BOLTS SO YOU CAN INSTALL THE ROLL CAGE FLOOR PLATES.
WITH THOSE BOLTED IN, THE CAGE SIDE PLATES ARE HELD IN PLACE WITH A MULTI ANGLE MAGNET.
WITH THE BACK HALF OF THE ROLL CAGE TAPED TOGETHER, FIND YOUR TALLEST BUDDY TO HELP YOU LIFT IT INTO PLACE.
NOW EVEN THOUGH IT'S JUST MOCKED UP, THE BED FLOOR PLATES NEED TO BE IN POSITION SINCE THEY PLACE THE CAGE AT THE CORRECT HEIGHT.
DOING THIS ALLOWS YOU TO CHECK THE FIT BETWEEN WHAT WILL BE THE TWO HALVES OF THE CAGE.
(JEREMY)>> THAT'S A PRETTY GOOD TEST FIT.
(ELIZA)>> NOW BEFORE WELDING MAKE SURE TO REMOVE ANY RESIDUE THAT THE TAPE MAY HAVE LEFT BEHIND.
(JEREMY)>> NOW THE FRONT LOOP ACTUALLY COMES IN TWO PIECES, AND WHY DO THEY DO THAT? CAUSE IT SAVES YOU ABOUT $60 BUCKS IN SHIPPING. SO WE'RE GONNA HAVE TO WELD THEM TOGETHER, AND ME, I DON'T MIND WELDING.
(ELIZA)>> WITH THE ALIGNMENT SLEEVE CENTERED BETWEEN THE PARTS, HIT THE PLUG WELDS ON EITHER SIDE BEFORE THE CENTER. [ welder crackling ]
(ELIZA)>> WE INTENTIONALLY LEFT A SLIGHT GAP BETWEEN THE TWO PIECES FOR BETTER WELD PENETRATION.
[ welder crackling ]
[ welder crackling ]
(ELIZA)>> NOW WE'RE NOT WELDING THE FLOOR PLATES TO THE BODY SINCE THEY WILL BE BOLTED IN PLACE DURING THE FINAL INSTALL. WE'RE JUST PUTTING SOME STRONG TACKS ON THEM FOR NOW. [ welder crackling ]
(JEREMY)>> NOW WITH A COUPLE OF TACKS IN PLACE WE'RE GONNA COME UP TOP AND MAKE SURE THAT THE CAGE IS PERFECTLY SQUARE. WE'RE USING THESE COOL LINCOLN ELECTRIC PIVOT ANGLE TOOLS, AND THEY'RE MAGNETIC AND THEY'RE HOLDING OUR CAGE IN THE PERFECT SPOT. SO WITH A COUPLE OF MORE CHECKS TO MAKE SURE IT'S ALL SQUARE, WE'RE GONNA THROW SOME MORE TACKS ON IT, TAKE THE FRONT SECTION OUT, SET IT ON THE GROUND, FINISH WELDING IT UP. [ welder crackling ]
(ELIZA)>> JUST LIKE THE FLOOR PLATES, THESE ARE ALSO HEAVY DUTY TACKS TO HOLD EVERYTHING IN PLACE SINCE THE CAGE WILL BE COMING BACK OUT, AND IT'S VERY IMPORTANT TO MAKE SURE THAT BOTH THE WINDSHIELD BAR AND THE DASH BAR ARE BOTH SQUARE AND LEVEL.
(JEREMY)>> ANYWHERE IS FINE. THERE YOU GO. WE MAY ONLY NEED TO WALK IN. THAT'S 28 AND THREEEIGHTHS. DO YOU HAVE A LINE ON THERE?
(ELIZA)> YEAH!
RIGHT THERE. ALL RIGHT, YEP, LET ME BORROW THAT SO I CAN...
(JEREMY)>> ARE YOU GONNA MARK?
(ELIZA)>> YEAH.
[ welder crackling ]
(ELIZA)>> YEP, YOU'RE LEVEL.
(JEREMY)>> PERFECT, HERE WE GO! WATCH YOUR EYES. [ welder crackling ]
(ELIZA)>> BEAUTIFUL!
(NARRATOR)>> UP NEXT WE'LL FINISH GETTING OUR ROLL CAGE INSTALLED, AND LATER A GREAT LOOKING PAINT JOB FOR A LOT LESS MONEY, STICK AROUND!
(ELIZA)>> HEY GUYS, WELCOME BACK TO XOR AND THE ROLL CAGE INSTALL ON OUR OVERLAND SCOUT PROJECT. NOW REMEMBER EARLIER WHEN I TOLD YOU TO FIND YOUR TALLEST FRIEND TO HELP LOAD THE CAGE INTO THE TRUCK? WELL EVIDENTLY THAT DOES NOT INCLUDE ME.
(JEREMY)>> OKAY, WALK BACKWARDS.
ALL RIGHT.
NOW WITHOUT HURTING YOURSELF... [ Eliza laughing ] OBVIOUSLY WITH THE CAGE OUT OF THE TRUCK AND ON THE GROUND IT'S EASY TO MOVE AROUND AND REACH ALL THE AREAS TO WELD, AND YOU CAN EVEN FLIP THE CAGE OVER IF YOU NEED TO. NOW YOU DON'T HAVE TO SPEND A FORTUNE ON YOUR WELDER. IN FACT WE'RE USING OUR LINCOLN POWER MIG 210 TO GET THE JOB DONE. [ welder crackling ]
[ welder crackling ]
(JEREMY)>> DON'T FORGET TO TURN YOUR WIRE SPEED UP WHEN YOU'RE BELOW THE MATERIAL AND THE GUN IS FACING UPWARDS.
NOW IT MAY LOOK LIKE THESE TWO PIECES AREN'T FIT PERFECTLY TOGETHER BUT AGAIN, A LITTLE GAP HELPS FOR WELDING PENETRATION. [ welder crackling ]
(ELIZA)>> OH THAT'S GONNA PARTY.
(JEREMY)>> NOW WITH THE FRONT HALF OF THE CAGE COMPLETELY WELDED AND BACK IN THE SCOUT WE CAN TACK THE REMAINING TUBES IN PLACE SO WE CAN LOCATE WHERE WE NEED TO DRILL THE HOLES TO MOUNT THE BED FLOOR PLATES.
OH AND WE'RE NARROW. JUST LIKE UP FRONT, MAKE SURE TO TAKE THE TIME TO SQUARE UP THE REAR CROSS BAR. THERE YOU GO.
WITH EVERYTHING IN PLACE, IT'S TIME FOR EVEN MORE STRONG TACKS BECAUSE ONCE AGAIN THE ENTIRE CAGE WILL HAVE TO COME OUT TO FINISH WELD IT.
[ drill spinning ]
(JEREMY)>> BUT BEFORE THAT WE NOW KNOW EXACTLY WHERE TO DRILL TO BOLT OUR FLOOR PLATES TO THE BODY. A FEW OF THE HOLES MAY REQUIRE LONGER BOLTS DUE TO DRILLING THROUGH BODY CROSS MEMBERS.
[ drilling spinning ]
(JEREMY)>> HEY GUYS, WE THOUGHT WE'D TAKE A LITTLE BIT OF TIME TO SHOW YOU SOME OF THE COOL NEW TOOLS THAT WE HAVE IN THE SHOP. NOW LINCOLN ELECTRIC HAS COME IN AND HAS GIVEN US EVERY TOOL WE MAY NEED TO SOLVE PRETTY MUCH ANY PROBLEM WE MAY FIND.
[ welder crackling ]
(JEREMY)>> NOW YOU'RE NOT GONNA WELD ANYTHING WITHOUT A GOOD HELMET. WELL LINCOLN HAS COME UP WITH A GREAT NEW DESIGN BECAUSE LET'S FACE IT, WE'VE ALL WORN THOSE OLD HELMETS WHERE YOU JUST CAN'T SEE WHAT YOU'RE DOING. NOW OUR GOOD BUDDY CHASE IS HERE FROM LINCOLN ELECTRIC TO TELL US ALL ABOUT THESE GREAT NEW HELMETS. CHASE WHAT DO WE GOT?
(CHASE)>> SO RIGHT HERE WE HAVE A VIKING 33-50 SERIES AUTO DARKENING WELDING HELMET. SO FIRST I WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE DESIGN. SO THIS WAS DESIGNED WITH COMFORT IN MIND. SO THE FIRST THING TO POINT OUT IS THE PIVOT STYLE HEAD GEAR. SO WHAT THIS ALLOWS THE OPERATOR TO DO IS ADJUST IT FOR A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT FEATURES TO MAINTAIN COMFORTABILITY. THE SECOND DESIGN FEATURE I WANT TO CALL OUT IS THE SHELL DESIGN. SO WE USED A LIGHT WEIGHT NYLON PLASTIC, WHICH OFFERS FLEXIBILITY BUT ALSO DURABILITY FOR ANY TYPE OF WELDING ENVIRONMENT.
(JEREMY)>> NOW WE TALKED BEFORE THAT YOU REALLY CAN'T SEE OUT OF THOSE OLD WELDING HELMETS, AND LINCOLN'S GOT A GREAT LINE. THAT'S, "YOU CAN'T WELD WHAT YOU CAN'T SEE", AND I KNOW THERE'S SOME PRETTY COOL OPTICS GOING ON INSIDE HERE. SO WHAT'S THAT ALL ABOUT?
(CHASE)>> OUR LINCOLN WELDING HELMETS USE AN LCD DISPLAY. TRADITIONAL WELDING HELMETS USE A LIME GREEN COLOR THAT OPERATORS VIEW THROUGH THE HELMET. [ welder crackling ]
(CHASE)>> HOWEVER OUR ENGINEERS DEVELOPED FOURC LENS TECHNOLOGY, WHICH ALTERS THIS COLOR TO MORE OF A COOL BLUE, WHICH ALLOWS YOU TO SEE THE ARC AND PUDDLE CLEARER, AND ALSO REDUCES EYE STRAIN.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO TAKE MY WORD FOR IT. WE SCORED A PERFECT RATING ON THE ONLY AUTO DARKENING OPTIC TEST IN THE WORLD.
(JEREMY)>> WELL IN THE PAST I WOULD JUST USE MY WELDING HELMET TO WELD. WELL LINCOLN HAS MADE THESE THINGS PRETTY VERSATILE. WHY DON'T YOU TELL ME ABOUT IT?
(CHASE)>> THIS HELMET ACTUALLY HAS THREE SEPARATE MODES. THE FIRST MODE IS CUT. SO THAT IS SHADES FIVE TO EIGHT. SO THIS ALLOWS YOU TO PLASMA CUT OR OXY FUEL CUT. [ torch cutting metal ]
(CHASE)>> THE SECOND MODE IS WELD, WHICH IS GONNA BE SHADE RANGES NINE TO 13, WHICH IS YOUR TRADITIONAL AUTO DARKENING SHADE RANGES.
AND THEN THE LAST MODE IS GRIND MODE. SO WHAT THIS DOES IS IT TURNS OFF THE HELMET'S ARC SENSORS AND KEEPS THE HELMET IN THE SHADE THREE POINT FIVE RANGE. THIS ALLOWS YOU TO USE A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT METAL FABRICATION TOOLS AND SEE CLEARLY.
(JEREMY)>> WELL CHASE, THANKS FOR GIVING US THESE AWESOME WELDING HELMETS, AND YOU KNOW US. WE'LL DEFINITELY PUT THEM TO GOOD USE.
(CHASE)>> THANKS FOR HAVING ME TODAY, I KNOW YOU WILL.
(NARRATOR)>> AFTER THE BREAK WE'LL SHOW YOU THE RIGHT WAY TO PREP YOUR PROJECT FOR PAINT, STAY TUNED!
(ELIZA)>> HEY GUYS, THERE'S ALWAYS THAT ONE PART OF THE PROJECT THAT IS SUPER INTIMIDATING, AND THAT IS PAINTING.
YOU ALWAYS SEE THE GUYS WITH THE FANCY SPRAY BOOTH AND THE FANCY SPRAY GUNS, AND ALL DECKED OUT IN THE SAFETY GEAR, AND IT JUST LOOKS LIKE A LOT TO TAKE ON WHEN ALL YOU HAVE IS A GARAGE AND A SMALL AIR COMPRESSOR.
(JEREMY)>> SO TODAY WE'RE GONNA BE SHOWING YOU HOW TO GET A GREAT LOOKING PAINT JOB ON YOUR PROJECT WITHOUT USING A HIGH DOLLAR SPRAY SYSTEM. WE'RE GONNA BE USING OUR PRERUNNER RANGER PROJECT WE'RE GONNA CALL "PREFUNNER RANGER", AND WE'RE GONNA GIVE YOU A STEP BY STEP PROCESS ON HOW TO GET A QUALITY FINISH BY USING SPRAY PAINT. WE'RE ALSO GONNA BE DOING IT LIKE WE'RE STANDING IN YOUR GARAGE AND NOT BREAK THE BANK. NOW TO DO THIS IN YOUR GARAGE YOU'RE GONNA NEED JUST A COUPLE OF THINGS. YOU'RE GONNA NEED SOME PLASTIC TO PUT AROUND THE VEHICLE ON THE FLOOR, SOME MASKING TAPE AND SOME PAPER, WAX AND GREASE REMOVER, AND SOME SCUFF PADS, AND THAT SHOULD GET YOU GOING.
WE'RE JUST GONNA START WITH THE CAB FOR NOW, AND OBVIOUSLY YOU CAN SEE WE ALREADY MASKED IT OFF. SO THE NEXT STEP IS TO GET YOUR GREASE AND WAX REMOVER AND START CLEANING. NOW AFTER APPLYING IT IT'S VERY IMPORTANT TO SWITCH TO A CLEAN RAG TO GET RID OF ANY RESIDUAL RESIDUE. WE'RE USING SCOTT SHOP TOWELS. NOW PAINT HAS TWO TYPES OF ADHESION, MECHANICAL AND CHEMICAL. WE'RE GONNA BE USING RED SCUFF PADS TO GIVE IT THAT MECHANICAL ADHESION.
AND BE SURE TO BLOW OFF THE CLEAR COAT DUST YOU JUST CREATED BEFORE ONE MORE ROUND OF GREASE AND WAX REMOVER.
NOW THAT OUR TRUCK IS ALL PREPPED AND READY TO PAINT, WE'RE GONNA GO AHEAD AND USE DUPLICOLOR'S PREMIUM ACRYLIC ENAMEL. NOW DUPLICOLOR'S PREMIUM ACRYLIC ENAMEL IS A HIGH SOLIDS FORMULA. IT ALSO HAS ITS OWN ADHESION PROMOTOR TO HELP IT ADHERE TO BOTH METAL AND PLASTIC. NOW WE HAD OUR GOOD BUDDY BRIAN COME IN FROM DUPLICOLOR TO GIVE US A HAND AND KIND OF SHOW US WHAT TO DO. YOU KNOW BRIAN WE HAD TALKED ABOUT THIS HIGH SOLIDS FORMULA. WHAT'S THAT ALL ABOUT?
(BRIAN)>> WELL HIGH SOLID SIMPLY MEANS THAT THERE'S MORE PRODUCT AND SOLVENT IN THE CAN, WHICH ALLOWS FOR MORE COVERAGE WITH LESS COATS.
(JEREMY)>> PERFECT, SO IT SHOULD BE PRETTY SIMPLE TO PUT DOWN?
(BRIAN)>> YEAH, VERY EASY.
(JEREMY)>> FANTASTIC, LET'S GET TO IT!
(BRIAN)>> ALL RIGHT.
(ELIZA)>> NOW THE LAST STEP BEFORE PAINTING, YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU HIT THE WHOLE TRUCK WITH A TACK RAG.
THE FIRST COAT IS A LIGHT COAT. YOU'RE NOT TRYING TO CHANGE THE COLOR HERE. JUST GIVE IT A GOOD TACK COAT AS IT'S CALLED.
YOU CAN UTILIZE THE NATURAL BREAKS IN THE BODY LINES TO DEFINE GOOD STARTING AND STOPPING POINTS IN YOUR SWEEP. EVEN THOUGH YOU DON'T NEED A HIGH DOLLAR RESPIRATOR, YOU STILL NEED TO AT LEAST USE A PARTICLE MASK.
NOW FOR OUR BLUE COLOR WE ARE GOING TO BE APPLYING THREE SEPARATE COATS WITH 15 MINUTES OF FLASH TIME IN BETWEEN.
SO WHEN WE WERE COMING UP FOR THE LOOK FOR OUR PRERUNNER WE WENT ONLINE FOR SOME INSPIRATION, CAME UP WITH A COUPLE OF OUR OWN DESIGNS. ULTIMATELY WE LIKED THIS ONE. SO NOW ALL THAT'S LEFT TO DO IS START MASKING THE TRUCK AND GET TO PAINTING. OUR MASKING IS SIMPLE. WE'RE JUST COVERING THE BLUE AREAS WE WANT TO KEEP IN OUR DESIGN. SO NOW THAT OUR TRUCK IS COMPLETELY MASKED OFF HERE'S WHAT WE'RE GONNA DO. OUR BLUE EXPOSED PANELS WILL NOW BE SPRAYED WHITE. SO YOU MAY BE WONDERING WHY DID WE SPRAY THE WHOLE CAB BLUE IF WE WERE JUST GONNA COME BACK AND RESPRAY WHITE? WELL HERE'S A COUPLE OF REASONS. WE WEREN'T COMPLETELY SURE WHERE OUR DESIGN WAS GOING TO BE MASKED OFF AT, AND THIS WILL NOW GIVE US A CONSISTENT GLOSS OVERALL, AND DON'T WORRY, OUR BLUE WILL NOT BLEED THROUGH OUR WHITE.
(NARRATOR)>> WHEN WE COME BACK WE'LL PEEL OFF THE MASKING AND SEE HOW OUR PRERUNNER TURNED OUT, DON'T GO AWAY!
(BRIAN)>> TYPICALLY SPRAY PAINT IS USED FOR SMALLER PROJECTS AND NOT FOR PAINTING AN ENTIRE TRUCK. HERE I HAVE AN EXAMPLE OF A SMALL PROJECT THE WAY MOST PEOPLE WOULD DO IT. NOW I'M GONNA TAKE THIS APPROACH AND APPLY IT TO A LARGE JOB. AS YOU CAN SEE, THE SHORT PASSES USED FOR A SMALL JOB DON'T WORK WELL BECAUSE IT MAY CAUSE INCONSISTENT FINISH AND SHEEN. NOW HERE A FEW TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN SPRAY PAINTING. START SPRAYING OFF THE PANEL AND END OFF THE PANEL. HOLD THE CAN SIX TO EIGHT INCHES FROM THE SURFACE, AND APPLY THE PAINT WITH A 50 PERCENT OVERLAP TO KEEP A WET EDGE. KEEP THESE TIPS IN MIND WHEN MOVING FROM A SMALL PROJECT TO A LARGE PROJECT. YOUR SHORT PASSES NOW TURN INTO LONG PASSES DOWN THE ENTIRE PANEL FOR A SMOOTH, EVEN FINISH.
DUPLICOLOR OFFERS WHAT WE CALL AN EASY SPRAY NOZZLE FOR LESS FINGER FATIGUE, BUT FOR PAINTING LARGER PROJECTS LIKE A CAR OR TRUCK WE OFFER A SNAP AND SPRAY TRIGGER TO TRANSFORM A SPRAY CAN INTO A SPRAY GUN TO KEEP YOUR FINGER HAPPY.
(JEREMY)>> AND JUST LIKE WITH THE BLUE COAT, THE WHITE COAT GOES DOWN REALLY LIGHT. THIS IS OUR TACK COAT, AND WE'RE DEFINITELY NOT GOING FOR COMPLETE COVERAGE.
COMPARED TO TRADITIONAL PAINTING METHODS, THIS IS A VERY COST EFFECTIVE APPROACH TO GETTING A GREAT LOOK AND FINISH ON YOUR PROJECT. HAVING SAID THAT, YOU MAY SPEND A LITTLE MORE TIME PAINTING, BUT SINCE THIS CAN BE DONE IN YOUR GARAGE YOU CAN CONTROL THE PACE OF YOUR BUILD.
(ELIZA)>> NOW YOU CAN SEE WHAT I TALKED ABOUT EARLIER. EVEN THE FIRST LIGHT COAT OF WHITE IS DOING A GREAT JOB OF COVERING OUR BLUE.
LASTLY, THERE IS ONE IMPORTANT ASPECT OF PAINTING THIS WAY THAT WE HAVEN'T MENTIONED, AND THAT'S PROPER LIGHTING. YEAH, YEAH, SO I KNOW IT LOOKS LIKE WE MADE A BIG MISTAKE BY LEAVING ALL OF OUR TV LIGHTS OUT, BUT THAT WAS FOR A REASON. WHEN YOU'RE PAINTING YOU WANT TO HAVE AS MUCH LIGHT AS YOU CAN ON YOUR PAINTED SURFACE, AND THAT'S SO THAT YOU CAN FOLLOW YOUR WET EDGE AND HAVE THE PROPER OVERLAP. AGAIN, WITH 15 MINUTES OF FLASH BETWEEN EACH APPLICATION, OUR CAB WILL END UP WITH FOUR COATS OF WHITE ONCE WE ARE ALL DONE.
(JEREMY)>> NOW ONE OF THE LAST THINGS WE HAVE TO DO ON THE TRUCK IS PAINT THE FRONT END, BUT AS FAR AS THE REST OF THE PROJECT GOES I'M ACTUALLY PRETTY IMPRESSED. I'VE PAINTED A LOT OF TRUCKS IN MY TIME AND TO TAKE THIS UNIQUE APPROACH AT IT, IT ACTUALLY TURNED OUT REALLY WELL. WE'RE ALSO GONNA CARRY THIS WHITE LINE ACROSS THE BED SIDE, BUT WE HAVE TO MOUNT THE BED SIDE FIRST BECAUSE WE WANT THIS LINE TO BE ABSOLUTELY PERFECT.
(ELIZA)>> AND THE NEXT TIME YOU SEE OUR "PREFUNNER" IT'LL BE ROLLING BECAUSE WE'RE GONNA BE WORKING ON OUR LONG TRAVEL SUSPENSION.
