(MARC)>> BUT INSTEAD OF JUST REINSTALLING THAT BELT DRIVE THAT CAME ON OUR CAR FROM THE FACTORY WE DECIDED TO GO WITH SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT. NOW WE COULD DO A SERPENTINE SETUP OFF A LATER MODEL FOX BODY BUT WE DIDN'T WANT TO REALLY SOURCE ALL THOSE PARTS FROM A JUNKYARD OR TRY TO PIECE THEM TOGETHER. WE WANTED TO DO SOMETHING EXTRA SPECIAL. SO WE WENT WITH THIS KIT FROM JONES RACING PRODUCTS. THIS IS A COMPLETE BELT DRIVE SYSTEM THAT WE GOT FROM JONES, AND AT THE CENTER OF IT IS THIS BILLET HUB AND PULLEY ASSEMBLY HERE. NOW THIS THING WILL DRIVE THIS FIVE RIB BELT THAT SENDS THE POWER TO THE WATER PUMP. THE KIT ALSO COMES WITH THIS LIGHTWEIGHT ALTERNATOR AND BRACKET ASSEMBLY HERE, AND ALL THE HARDWARE TO GET IT INSTALLED ONTO THE ENGINE. NOW THEY OFFERED THIS IS A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT SIZES. YOU CAN GET A 70 OR AN 80 AMP, OR EVEN 140 OR 170 AMP IF YOU NEED ONE THAT BIG. NOW AS FOR THE POWER STEERING PUMP IT COMES WITH THIS BABY RIGHT HERE. IT'S GOT A LATE MODEL ALUMINUM HOUSING PUMP, WHICH IS NICE AND COMPACT. IT'S GOT A BILLET PULLEY. IT'S GOT AN FITTINGS FOR THE FEED AND THE RETURN, AS WELL AS THIS 18 OUNCE BUILT IN RESERVOIR. THE LAST PIECE OF THE PUZZLE IS GONNA BE THIS PULLEY RIGHT HERE. NOW THIS HAS GOT GROOVES ON IT FOR THAT FIVE RIB BELT I SHOWED YOU EARLIER AS WELL AS GROOVES FOR THE COG BELT THAT'S GONNA DRIVE THAT ALTERNATOR, BUT WE NEED A WATER PUMP TO ATTACH IT TO, AND THAT'S WHERE THIS THING COMES. EDELBROCK MAKES THIS AND WE GOT IT FROM SUMMIT RACING. IT'S ALL ALUMINUM. IT'S GOT THIS NICE BLACK COATING ON IT BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY THIS IS THE ONE THAT JONES RECOMMENDS WITH THIS KIT. WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THIS IS SEALED UP REALLY WELL. SO SOME PERMATEX GASKET MAKER WILL HELP US ENSURE THAT WE DON'T HAVE ANY LEAKS. THEN WE CAN WORK ON GETTING THE PUMP BOLTED UP TO THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE.
THERE ARE A COUPLE OF PLUGS WE NEED TO INSTALL. SO WE'LL GO AHEAD AND DO THAT TOO WITH SOME THREAD SEALER.
(TOMMY)>> NOW FOR THE PULLEY ADAPTER, WHICH WE'LL BOLT TO THE BALANCER.
A COUPLE OF SPACERS THEN GO INTO PLACE ALONG WITH A KEY TO KEEP THE PULLEY FROM SPINNING ON THE ADAPTER. THEN WE CAN SLIDE THE PULLEY ITSELF INTO PLACE AND BOLT THAT SUCKER DOWN.
(MARC)>> A COUPLE OF STUDS WILL REPLACE THE WATER PUMP BOLTS WE RAN IN EARLIER, AND WITH SOME ANTISEIZE ON THEM WE CAN INSTALL THESE ALUMINUM POSTS.
WE'RE JUST ABOUT READY TO INSTALL THIS ALTERNATOR BUT THERE'S SOME COOL THINGS ABOUT THIS THAT I DIDN'T MENTION EARLIER. THAT IS THAT THIS THING IS A ONE WIRE ALTERNATOR. JUST HOOK UP THE BATTERY WIRE RIGHT HERE. YOU DON'T HAVE TO HOOK ANYTHING ELSE UP, AND THE REASON YOU CAN DO THAT IS BECAUSE THIS THING IS INTERNALLY REGULATED. THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR IS RIGHT HERE RATHER THAN MOUNTED ON THE FENDER WELL WHERE THIS MUSTANG WOULD HAVE BEEN FROM THE FACTORY.

(MARC)>> SO TO LIGHT THE FIRE ON OUR 427 WINDSOR THERE WE DECIDED TO GO TO PERTRONIX FOR A WHOLE BUNCH OF STUFF THAT YOU SEE HERE ON THE TABLE. FIRST THING I'M GONNA POINT OUT IS GONNA BE THIS DIGITAL HP IGNITION BOX. YOU'VE PROBABLY SEEN US INSTALL THESE BEFORE. WE ACTUALLY PUT ONE OF THESE ON OUR '72 CHEVELLE. IT IS SMALL BUT IT PACKS A BIG PUNCH. NOW IT DOES COME WITH THIS WIRING HARNESS, WHICH MAKES IT EASY TO INSTALL. JUST PLUG IT IN, THIS ONE LITTLE PLUG HERE, AND THIS LITTLE PIG TAIL WITH GO TO THE DISTRIBUTOR. IT'S ALL GOOD! FOR OUR COIL WE DECIDED TO GO WITH THIS FLAME THROWER HP. NOW THIS THING IS BUILT FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE ENGINES AND IT'S HEAT RESISTANT. FOR A DISTRIBUTOR WE WENT WITH THIS BILLET FLAME THROWER. IT HAS A MAGNETIC PICK UP, WHICH CONNECTS DIRECTLY TO THE IGNITION BOX. AND OF COURSE WE HAVE TO GET THE SPARK TO THE SPARK PLUGS, AND WE'RE GONNA DO THAT WITH THESE EIGHT MILLIMETER HIGH PERFORMANCE WIRES. THESE ARE FROM PERTRONIX'S FLAME THROWER LINE, AND THEY HAVE THE CERAMIC ENDS. THEY'RE CUT TO FIT. SO WE KNOW THEY'RE GONNA FIT NICE. FIRST THING I WANT TO DO IS I WANT TO GET THE COIL AND THIS IGNITION BOX MOUNTED. I'M GONNA DO THIS ONE FIRST.

(TOMMY)>> I'M GONNA DEMONSTRATE TO YOU GUYS HOW A VACUUM ADVANCE WORKS. WE'RE GONNA APPLY A VACUUM SOURCE TO THE FRONT SIDE OF THIS POD. IT'S GONNA CREATE THE VACUUM, COLLAPSE THE DIAPHRAGM, AND ROTATE THIS PLATE. NOW WHAT THAT JUST DID WAS ADVANCE YOUR TIMING.
(MARC)>> NOW I'M GONNA TALK ABOUT MECHANICAL ADVANCE, WHICH HAPPENS RIGHT UP HERE ON TOP. NOW ALL OF THIS STUFF SPINS AS THE ENGINE SPINS. AS ENGINE RPM INCREASES THESE WEIGHTS GET TAKEN OUTWARD BY CENTRIFUGAL FORCE. WHEN THAT HAPPENS THIS PLATE MOVES ADVANCING THE TIMING. Y
(TOMMY)>> YOUR MECHANICAL ADVANCEMENT CAN BE CHANGED UP SOMETIMES WITH A CURVE KIT. NOW NORMALLY IT COMES WITH A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT SPRINGS AND DIFFERENT WEIGHTS. NOW WHAT THAT DOES, THAT CHANGES THE RATE OF THE ADVANCEMENT. NOW ALSO THEY COME WITH THESE LITTLE BITY LIMITING STRAPS, AND WHAT IT DOES IS IT LIMITS HOW FAR THAT WEIGHT CAN GO OUT, THUS LIMITING HOW FAR YOU CAN ADVANCE THE TIMING.
(MARC)>> SO BY NOW I GUESS YOU'VE FIGURED OUT THAT AS ENGINE RPM GOES UP THE MECHANICAL ADVANCE GOES UP WITH IT, BUT VACUUM ADVANCE ACTUALLY WORKS OPPOSITE OF THAT. IT'S ACTUALLY MORE PROMINENT AT LOW RPM AND IDLE WHEN ENGINE VACUUM IS AT ITS HIGHEST. NOW AS YOU ACCELERATE, OPEN THOSE THROTTLE BLADES, THE VACUUM GOES DOWN AND DOWN GOES THE ADVANCE THAT GOES ALONG WITH IT.
(TOMMY)>> WHETHER YOU NEED EITHER ONE OF THESE ALL DEPEND ON YOUR APPLICATION. LIKE IF YOU'RE A NASCAR OR DIRT TRACK GUY YOU DON'T NEED EITHER ONE OF THOSE BECAUSE YOUR RPM LEVEL IS GONNA BE THROUGH THE ROOF.

A WHILE BACK WE DID A LITTLE PIECE ON THE TYPES OF SOLDERING IRONS TO USE, AND THE ONE WE'RE GONNA USE TODAY IS THIS LITTLE BUTANE SETUP, BUT BEFORE WE GET INTO ALL THAT LET'S TALK ABOUT THE CUTTERS. CUTTERS HAVE DIFFERENT DIAMETER HOLES FOR DIFFERENT GAUGES OF WIRE. IF YOU USE TOO SMALL OF A HOLE WELL YOU'RE GONNA GOUGE INTO THE WIRE AND CUT SOME OF THE STRANDS, AND THAT MESSES EVERYTHING UP. WHAT I LIKE TO DO IS TAKE IT, CUT IT, KINDA WIGGLE AROUND A BIT, AND THEN PULL IT OFF. THAT PREVENTS ANYTHING FROM GOUGING INTO THE WIRE. NOW THE FIRST JOINT THAT WE'RE GONNA DO IS CALLED A PIG TAIL. IT'S PRETTY BASIC. YOU JUST BASICALLY TAKE TWO OF THESE TWO WIRES, PUT THEM TOGETHER AND TWIST THEM, AND WE'LL SOLDER THEM UP.
I'M GONNA MOUNT THIS IS THE VICE TO KEEP EVERYTHING PUT, BUT THEY MAKE SPECIAL CLAMPS FOR THIS. IF YOU'RE GONNA USE A VICE JUST DON'T CRANK DOWN ON IT TOO HARD AND DAMAGE THE WIRE. WHAT YOU WANT TO DO IS TAKE YOUR HOT IRON, ATTACH IT TO THE BOTTOM OF THE WIRE, LET IT GET UP TO TEMPERATURE, AND WHEN YOU TOUCH THE SOLDER TO IT IT'LL MELT INTO PLACE. WHAT YOU DON'T WANT TO DO IS TAKE THE SOLDER AND TOUCH THE IRON AND BURN IT IN THAT WAY. WHAT THAT'LL DO IS CREATE A COLD JOINT AND CAUSE A FAILURE.
NOW THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT SPLICE BUT THE NEXT COUPLE WE'RE GONNA SHOW YOU ARE A LITTLE MORE APPEALING TO THE EYE. THIS ONE WILL INVOLVE MESHING THE TWO WIRES TOGETHER A BIT. SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO BEND THEM UP JUST A LITTLE AND PUSH THEM TOGETHER. THEN HOLDING ONE HALF, TWIST IT AROUND.
THIS THIRD ONE THAT WE'RE GONNA SHOW YOU IS VERY SIMILAR TO THIS ONE BUT YOU JUST DON'T HAVE TO MESH THE WIRES TOGETHER, BUT WHAT IT DOES REQUIRE YOU TO DO IS CUT THE INSULATION BACK JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE. PUT THE WIRES TOGETHER ABOUT MID WAY, HOLD THEM, AND TWIST ONE SIDE.
NOW TO DO THIS LAST ONE WE'RE GONNA USE THIS LITTLE MICRO TORCH. NOW THIS CAN REALLY SPEED UP THE SOLDERING PROCESS.

FROM THEN ON I TORE IT TO BITS AND I BOUGHT THE BODY KIT FROM CANADA. IT CAME IN WITH A 383. I SOLD THE ENGINE AND THEN I BOUGHT A 472 HEMI AND I PUT THAT IN IT, AND IT WASN'T QUICK ENOUGH. SO THEN I BOUGHT ANOTHER SUPER BIRD, ANOTHER RACE CAR WITH A 572 HEMI IN IT. AND I STRIPPED ALL THE RACE EQUIPMENT OUT OF THAT, PUT IT IN HERE. THE OTHER SUPER BIRD IS NOW A STREET CAR.

NOW WE COULD DO A SERPENTINE SETUP OFF A LATER MODEL FOX BODY BUT WE DIDN'T WANT TO REALLY SOURCE ALL THOSE PARTS FROM A JUNKYARD OR TRY TO PIECE THEM TOGETHER. WE WANTED TO DO SOMETHING EXTRA SPECIAL. SO WE WENT WITH THIS KIT FROM JONES RACING PRODUCTS. THIS IS A COMPLETE BELT DRIVE SYSTEM THAT WE GOT FROM JONES, AND AT THE CENTER OF IT IS THIS BILLET HUB AND PULLEY ASSEMBLY HERE. NOW THIS THING WILL DRIVE THIS FIVE RIB BELT THAT SENDS THE POWER TO THE WATER PUMP. THE KIT ALSO COMES WITH THIS LIGHTWEIGHT ALTERNATOR AND BRACKET ASSEMBLY HERE, AND ALL THE HARDWARE TO GET IT INSTALLED ONTO THE ENGINE. NOW THEY OFFERED THIS IS A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT SIZES. YOU CAN GET A 70 OR AN 80 AMP, OR EVEN 140 OR 170 AMP IF YOU NEED ONE THAT BIG. NOW AS FOR THE POWER STEERING PUMP IT COMES WITH THIS BABY RIGHT HERE. IT'S GOT A LATE MODEL ALUMINUM HOUSING PUMP, WHICH IS NICE AND COMPACT. IT'S GOT A BILLET PULLEY. IT'S GOT AN FITTINGS FOR THE FEED AND THE RETURN, AS WELL AS THIS 18 OUNCE BUILT IN RESERVOIR. THE LAST PIECE OF THE PUZZLE IS GONNA BE THIS PULLEY RIGHT HERE. NOW THIS HAS GOT GROOVES ON IT FOR THAT FIVE RIB BELT I SHOWED YOU EARLIER AS WELL AS GROOVES FOR THE COG BELT THAT'S GONNA DRIVE THAT ALTERNATOR, BUT WE NEED A WATER PUMP TO ATTACH IT TO, AND THAT'S WHERE THIS THING COMES. EDELBROCK MAKES THIS AND WE GOT IT FROM SUMMIT RACING. IT'S ALL ALUMINUM. IT'S GOT THIS NICE BLACK COATING ON IT BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY THIS IS THE ONE THAT JONES RECOMMENDS WITH THIS KIT. WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THIS IS SEALED UP REALLY WELL. SO SOME PERMATEX GASKET MAKER WILL HELP US ENSURE THAT WE DON'T HAVE ANY LEAKS. THEN WE CAN WORK ON GETTING THE PUMP BOLTED UP TO THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE.
THERE ARE A COUPLE OF PLUGS WE NEED TO INSTALL. SO WE'LL GO AHEAD AND DO THAT TOO WITH SOME THREAD SEALER.
(TOMMY)>> NOW FOR THE PULLEY ADAPTER, WHICH WE'LL BOLT TO THE BALANCER.
A COUPLE OF SPACERS THEN GO INTO PLACE ALONG WITH A KEY TO KEEP THE PULLEY FROM SPINNING ON THE ADAPTER. THEN WE CAN SLIDE THE PULLEY ITSELF INTO PLACE AND BOLT THAT SUCKER DOWN.
(MARC)>> A COUPLE OF STUDS WILL REPLACE THE WATER PUMP BOLTS WE RAN IN EARLIER, AND WITH SOME ANTISEIZE ON THEM WE CAN INSTALL THESE ALUMINUM POSTS.
WE'RE JUST ABOUT READY TO INSTALL THIS ALTERNATOR BUT THERE'S SOME COOL THINGS ABOUT THIS THAT I DIDN'T MENTION EARLIER. THAT IS THAT THIS THING IS A ONE WIRE ALTERNATOR. JUST HOOK UP THE BATTERY WIRE RIGHT HERE. YOU DON'T HAVE TO HOOK ANYTHING ELSE UP, AND THE REASON YOU CAN DO THAT IS BECAUSE THIS THING IS INTERNALLY REGULATED. THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR IS RIGHT HERE RATHER THAN MOUNTED ON THE FENDER WELL WHERE THIS MUSTANG WOULD HAVE BEEN FROM THE FACTORY.

JUST PLUG IT IN, THIS ONE LITTLE PLUG HERE, AND THIS LITTLE PIG TAIL WITH GO TO THE DISTRIBUTOR. IT'S ALL GOOD! FOR OUR COIL WE DECIDED TO GO WITH THIS FLAME THROWER HP. NOW THIS THING IS BUILT FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE ENGINES AND IT'S HEAT RESISTANT. FOR A DISTRIBUTOR WE WENT WITH THIS BILLET FLAME THROWER. IT HAS A MAGNETIC PICK UP, WHICH CONNECTS DIRECTLY TO THE IGNITION BOX. AND OF COURSE WE HAVE TO GET THE SPARK TO THE SPARK PLUGS, AND WE'RE GONNA DO THAT WITH THESE EIGHT MILLIMETER HIGH PERFORMANCE WIRES. THESE ARE FROM PERTRONIX'S FLAME THROWER LINE, AND THEY HAVE THE CERAMIC ENDS. THEY'RE CUT TO FIT. SO WE KNOW THEY'RE GONNA FIT NICE. FIRST THING I WANT TO DO IS I WANT TO GET THE COIL AND THIS IGNITION BOX MOUNTED. I'M GONNA DO THIS ONE FIRST.

NOW WHAT THAT DOES, THAT CHANGES THE RATE OF THE ADVANCEMENT. NOW ALSO THEY COME WITH THESE LITTLE BITY LIMITING STRAPS, AND WHAT IT DOES IS IT LIMITS HOW FAR THAT WEIGHT CAN GO OUT, THUS LIMITING HOW FAR YOU CAN ADVANCE THE TIMING.
(MARC)>> SO BY NOW I GUESS YOU'VE FIGURED OUT THAT AS ENGINE RPM GOES UP THE MECHANICAL ADVANCE GOES UP WITH IT, BUT VACUUM ADVANCE ACTUALLY WORKS OPPOSITE OF THAT. IT'S ACTUALLY MORE PROMINENT AT LOW RPM AND IDLE WHEN ENGINE VACUUM IS AT ITS HIGHEST. NOW AS YOU ACCELERATE, OPEN THOSE THROTTLE BLADES, THE VACUUM GOES DOWN AND DOWN GOES THE ADVANCE THAT GOES ALONG WITH IT.

CUTTERS HAVE DIFFERENT DIAMETER HOLES FOR DIFFERENT GAUGES OF WIRE. IF YOU USE TOO SMALL OF A HOLE WELL YOU'RE GONNA GOUGE INTO THE WIRE AND CUT SOME OF THE STRANDS, AND THAT MESSES EVERYTHING UP. WHAT I LIKE TO DO IS TAKE IT, CUT IT, KINDA WIGGLE AROUND A BIT, AND THEN PULL IT OFF. THAT PREVENTS ANYTHING FROM GOUGING INTO THE WIRE. NOW THE FIRST JOINT THAT WE'RE GONNA DO IS CALLED A PIG TAIL. IT'S PRETTY BASIC. YOU JUST BASICALLY TAKE TWO OF THESE TWO WIRES, PUT THEM TOGETHER AND TWIST THEM, AND WE'LL SOLDER THEM UP.
I'M GONNA MOUNT THIS IS THE VICE TO KEEP EVERYTHING PUT, BUT THEY MAKE SPECIAL CLAMPS FOR THIS. IF YOU'RE GONNA USE A VICE JUST DON'T CRANK DOWN ON IT TOO HARD AND DAMAGE THE WIRE. WHAT YOU WANT TO DO IS TAKE YOUR HOT IRON, ATTACH IT TO THE BOTTOM OF THE WIRE, LET IT GET UP TO TEMPERATURE, AND WHEN YOU TOUCH THE SOLDER TO IT IT'LL MELT INTO PLACE. WHAT YOU DON'T WANT TO DO IS TAKE THE SOLDER AND TOUCH THE IRON AND BURN IT IN THAT WAY. WHAT THAT'LL DO IS CREATE A COLD JOINT AND CAUSE A FAILURE.
NOW THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT SPLICE BUT THE NEXT COUPLE WE'RE GONNA SHOW YOU ARE A LITTLE MORE APPEALING TO THE EYE. THIS ONE WILL INVOLVE MESHING THE TWO WIRES TOGETHER A BIT. SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO BEND THEM UP JUST A LITTLE AND PUSH THEM TOGETHER. THEN HOLDING ONE HALF, TWIST IT AROUND.
THIS THIRD ONE THAT WE'RE GONNA SHOW YOU IS VERY SIMILAR TO THIS ONE BUT YOU JUST DON'T HAVE TO MESH THE WIRES TOGETHER, BUT WHAT IT DOES REQUIRE YOU TO DO IS CUT THE INSULATION BACK JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE. PUT THE WIRES TOGETHER ABOUT MID WAY, HOLD THEM, AND TWIST ONE SIDE.
NOW TO DO THIS LAST ONE WE'RE GONNA USE THIS LITTLE MICRO TORCH. NOW THIS CAN REALLY SPEED UP THE SOLDERING PROCESS.

FROM THEN ON I TORE IT TO BITS AND I BOUGHT THE BODY KIT FROM CANADA. IT CAME IN WITH A 383. I SOLD THE ENGINE AND THEN I BOUGHT A 472 HEMI AND I PUT THAT IN IT, AND IT WASN'T QUICK ENOUGH. SO THEN I BOUGHT ANOTHER SUPER BIRD, ANOTHER RACE CAR WITH A 572 HEMI IN IT. AND I STRIPPED ALL THE RACE EQUIPMENT OUT OF THAT, PUT IT IN HERE. THE OTHER SUPER BIRD IS NOW A STREET CAR.
