COLD AIR KIT, AND MORE. PLUS WE'LL MAKE ROOM FOR
OUR TANKS, TIRES, AND TOOLS, THEN ROLL OUT.
(IAN)>> TODAY WE'VE GOT OUR DIESEL POWERED SERVICE TRUCK BACK IN THE SHOP. A VEHICLE THAT WAS ONCE USED TO TAKE CARE OF CRANES ON CONSTRUCTION SITES HAS BEEN GIVEN A NEW LIFE AS A CHASE TRUCK TO SUPPORT DESERT RACE TEAMS. NOW LAST TIME WE HAD THIS RIG IN THE SHOP, WE SHOWED YOU GUYS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BUILDING A CHASE TRUCK AND JUST BUILDING A LIFTED STREET TRUCK. WE THREW AN AFTERMARKET SUSPENSION SYSTEM AT THIS, AS WELL AS A BUNCH OF STEERING UPGRADES TO ENSURE IT COULD HANDLE SOME HARDCORE OFF ROADING. TODAY THE FIRST THING THAT WE'RE GONNA DO IS ADD A BUNCH OF POWER UNDERNEATH THE HOOD OF THIS TRUCK.
(CHRIS)>> THEN WE'LL CLEAN UP THIS SERVICE BED AND ADD ALL THE COOL STUFF THAT YOU WOULD FIND IN THE BACK OF A CHASE TRUCK, LIKE THE TOOLS YOU NEED AND WHAT YOU HAVE TO CARRY TO SUPPORT YOUR RACE TEAM.
(IAN)>> WE REMOVED THE FACTORY AIR BOX FROM THE MOTOR BECAUSE IT IS VERY RESTRICTIVE. WE'RE GONNA REPLACE IT WITH A HIGH FLOWING AFE UNIT AND REUSABLE FILTER ELEMENT. BUT THE REAL REASON THAT WE PULLED IT OUT WAS SO WE COULD GAIN ACCESS TO THE INTAKE IN OUR MOTOR AND ADD TO THIS SNOW PERFORMANCE MPG MAX SYSTEM. NOW I'M SURE YOU GUYS ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE THEORY BEHIND WET METHANOL INJECTION. ON A DIESEL MOTOR YOU SIMPLY INJECT A MIXTURE OF WATER AND METHANOL TO GET MORE POWER OUT OF THE ENGINE. BUT THE MPG MAX SYSTEM IS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT. IT USES A NEW STYLE OF CONTROLLER THAT SLOWLY ADDS THE METHANOL AND THE WATER TO THE ENGINE ALL ACROSS THE POWER BAND. EVEN WHEN YOU HAVE THE CRUISE CONTROL APPLIED. THAT HELPS YOU PICK UP A LITTLE BIT EXTRA MILEAGE WHEN YOU'RE DRIVING THE TRUCK, USUALLY AROUND ONE TO THREE MILES PER GALLON. BUT THEN AT THE SAME TIME WHEN YOU REALLY LOAD THAT MOTOR DOWN AND NEED THE EXTRA POWER, THIS CAN ADD UP TO 70 HORSEPOWER INSIDE THE ENGINE. THE NOZZLES FOR THE WATER/METHANOL INJECTION NEED TO BE INSTALLED AFTER THE INTERCOOLER, JUST BEFORE THE AIR CHARGE ENTERS THE ENGINE. THE BEST PLACE TO INSTALL THEM ON OUR DIESEL IS IN THE EGR BRIDGE JUST AFTER THE AIR HEATER. WITH IT REMOVED FROM THE MOTOR, WE'LL BOTH DRILL AND TAP FOR THE NEW NOZZLES. THEN REINSTALL THEM, MOUNT THE WATER/METHANOL TANK IN THE BACK OF THE TRUCK, RUN THE FEED TUBES OVER TO THE PUMP, AND HOOK UP THE CONTROLLER. THE COLD AIR KIT REPLACES THE ENTIRE FACTORY AIR BOSS ASSEMBLY, AND REUSES THE STOCK MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR. THE CONCENTRATED MIXTURE THAT WE'RE GONNA RUN IN OUR SYSTEM IS FROM SNOW PERFORMANCE AND IT'S CALLED BOOST JUICE, AND IT BUILDS POWER A COUPLE DIFFERENT WAYS. OBVIOUSLY THE METHANOL IN THERE IS FLAMMABLE. ADD THAT TO ANY ENGINE AND YOU'RE GONNA BUILD MORE POWER, BUT THE WATER IS JUST AS IMPORTANT TO A DIESEL. THAT WATER IS GONNA HELP KEEP OUR EGT'S, OR EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURES, AT A REASONABLE RATE. IF YOU CAN KEEP THOSE DOWN, YOU CAN PUT MORE TURBO BOOST TO THE ENGINE AND BUILD MORE POWER. NOW OUR MPG MAX KIT COMES WITH A PYROMETER, WHICH IS SIMPLY A PROBE THAT WILL GO IN THE EXHAUST BEFORE THE TURBO. IT'LL MEASURE THOSE EGT'S AND WORK WITH THE CONTROLLER TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING STAYS AT A REASONABLE LEVEL. IF YOU COAT THE DRILL BIT WITH HEAVY GREASE BEFORE YOU DRILL, YOU CAN GET AWAY WITHOUT REMOVE THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD. ALL THE CHIPS FROM DRILLING WILL STICK TO THE HEAVY GREASE. DO THE SAME THING TO THE TAP, AND CLEAN THE HOLE OUT WITH A MAGNET BEFORE INSTALLING THE PIPE FITTING.
(CHRIS)>> WITH THE ENGINE MAKING MORE POWER, WE NEED TO DEAL WITH THE EXHAUST ON OUR CHASE TRUCK. THIS MAGNAFLOW FIVE INCH FULL STAINLESS STEEL EXHAUST IS MANDREL BENT TO IMPROVE FLOW, AND INCLUDES A FLOW THROUGH MUFFLER WITH NO RESTRICTIONS. THIS KIT IS A TURBO BACKED SYSTEM THAT REPLACES EVERY PIECE OF EXHAUST FROM THE DOWN PIPE. THE STAINLESS STEEL CONSTRUCTION MEANS IT'LL LAST THE LIFETIME OF THIS TRUCK. THE HUGE DIAMETER AND MANDREL BENDS ALSO HELP KEEP OUR EGT'S DOWN.

(IAN)>> WITH ALL THE HARD PARTS INSTALLED ON OUR TRUCK, IT'S TIME TO TURN OUR ATTENTION TO WHAT IS REALLY GONNA BUILD POWER IN THIS DIESEL, AND THAT IS THE ELECTRONICS PACKAGE. IT'S GONNA START WITH A DIABLO SPORT TRINITY 1,000 AND A CUSTOM SOFTWARE UPLOAD. NOW WHY YOU CAN BUILD SO MUCH POWER WITH A MODERN DIESEL USING JUST ELECTRONICS HAS TO DO WITH HOW THE DIESEL ENGINE WORKS. AND ONCE YOU UNDERSTAND THAT IT ALL MAKES SENSE. A DIESEL ENGINE USES WHAT'S CALLED DIRECT INJECTION TECHNOLOGY. NOW THAT MEANS WE CAN LOOK FOR A LOT OF POWER AND NOT WORRY ABOUT ANY DETONATION INSIDE THE CYLINDER LIKE YOU'D HAVE WITH A GASOLINE ENGINE. NOW WHAT CAUSES DETONATION IN A GAS ENGINE HAS TO DO WITH HOW THE ENGINE WORKS. WHEN THE PISTON TRAVELS DOWN THE CYLINDER, IT'S DRAWING IN BOTH FUEL AND AIR AND MIXING THEM TOGETHER. THEN DURING THE COMPRESSION STROKE IT'S TAKING THAT MIXTURE AND COMPRESSING IT UP INTO THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER, AND PUTTING IT UNDER A LOT OF PRESSURE AND IT'S OPERATING AT A HIGH HEAT. THEN THE SPARK PLUG FIRES, IT IGNITES THAT FUEL AND AIR MIXTURE AND PUSHES THE PISTON BACK DOWN THE CYLINDER, AND THAT'S WHERE WE BUILD OUR EXTRA POWER. NOW THE PROBLEM COMES WHEN WE'RE LOOKING FOR MORE POWER. MAYBE YOU WANT MORE FUEL IN THERE, AND BY BOOSTING THE TURBO CHARGER YOU'RE GONNA GET MORE AIR. BUT THAT MAKES THE MIXTURE A LOT MORE VOLATILE. WHEN THE PISTON IS TRAVELING UP THE CYLINDER ON THE COMPRESSION STROKE, THE MIXTURE CAN ACTUALLY PREIGNITE JUST BECAUSE OF THE HEAT AND PRESSURE ON THE COMPRESSION STROKE. THAT SMALL FLAME FRONT WILL MOVE ACROSS THE CYLINDER. THEN THE SPARK PLUG WILL FIRE AND THOSE TWO FLAME FRONTS WILL COLLIDE, AND THAT'S WHAT CAUSES DETONATION FOR SPARK KNOT. NOW IT MIGHT NOT SOUND LIKE A BIG DEAL, BUT THERE'S ENOUGH PRESSURE IN THERE TO CAUSE DAMAGE TO INTERNAL COMPONENTS INSIDE A GASOLINE ENGINE. NOW DIESELS DON'T HAVE THAT PROBLEM BECAUSE REMEMBER THE INJECTOR IS BASICALLY THE SPARK PLUG. WHEN THE PISTON'S TRAVELING DOWN ON THE INTAKE STROKE, ALL THAT'S COMING INTO THE CYLINDER IS JUST AIR. THERE'S NO FUEL IN HERE YET. SO WHEN THE PISTON TRAVELS UP ON THE COMPRESSION STROKE, ALL IT'S DOING IS COMPRESSING AIR. THERE'S NOTHING THERE TO IGNITE. THEN WHEN YOU WANT IT TO IGNITE THE INJECTOR WILL FIRE AT THE PRECISE POINT, CREATE THE FLAME FRONT INSTANTLY AND PUSH THE PISTON BACK DOWN. NOW BECAUSE THERE'S NO FUEL IN THERE, WE DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT DETONATION. WE CAN ADD LOTS OF BOOST, LOTS OF FUEL, BUILD MONSTER POWER. THE FIRST STEP IN GETTING MORE POWER OUT OF OUR DIESEL IS TO HOOK THE TRINITY TO UP TO THE ALDL CONNECTOR UNDERNEATH THE DASH. AFTER GOING THROUGH THE VEHICLE SELECTION PROCESS WE CAN EITHER UPLOAD A TUNE RIGHT FROM THE HAND HELD, OR HOOK IT UP TO OUR LAPTOP AND BUILD A TUNE THAT'S ALL OUR OWN. WE'RE ALSO GOING TO INSTALL A FLEECE PERFORMANCE TURBO BRAKE SYSTEM TO GIVE US FULL CONTROL OVER OUR TRUCK'S VARIABLE VEIN TURBOCHARGER. THE HARNESS INSTALLS USING A JUMPER PACK IN THE TRUCK'S MAIN HARNESS ASSEMBLY. TO CONTROL THE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH, THE CONTROL WIRE MUST BE TAPPED INTO AT THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE, AND THE THROTTLE POSITION SIGNAL IS TAPPED INTO AT THE PEDAL HARNESS. THE TURBO BRAKE BASICALLY GIVES US FULL CONTROL OVER THE VEINS INSIDE OUR VARIABLE VEIN TURBOCHARGER. IF WE WANT MORE POWER OR MORE BOOST WE CAN SIMPLY DIAL IT UP RIGHT HERE ON THE DASH, HELP PULL A HEAVY LOAD AWAY FROM A DEAD STOP. BUT AT THE SAME TIME IT ALSO HELPS WITH BRAKING. UNDER HEAVY BRAKING IT'LL START TO CLOSE THE VEINS DOWN INSIDE THE TURBOCHARGER AND APPLY THE TORQUE CONVERTER. KINDA WORKING LIKE A JAKE BRAKE. NOW BECAUSE WE INSTALLED THE TURBO BRAKE AND THE SNOW PERFORMANCE KIT, THAT IS WHY WE HAVE THE CUSTOM TUNE PUT TOGETHER FOR OUR TRINITY 1,000. YOU COULD SIMPLY USE AN OFF THE SHELF TUNE REALLY WITH NO PROBLEM, BUT BECAUSE WE ADDED THESE TWO OTHER COMPONENTS, WE WORKED WITH DIABLO SPORT AND THEY PUT TOGETHER A PACKAGE THAT WOULD WORK IDEAL FOR US. THAT'S THE NICE THING ABOUT THIS TUNER. YOU CAN SIMPLY INSTALL IT RIGHT NOW AND GO. IF YOU ADD MORE POWER ADDERS LATER ON, YOU CAN GO INSIDE, CHANGE THAT TUNE TO SUIT YOUR TRUCK PERFECTLY.

NOT ONLY IS THE PIT IN A DIFFERENT PLACE FOR EVERY RACE, BUT QUITE OFTEN YOU'RE GONNA LOAD UP ALL YOUR GEAR AND FOLLOW THE CAR AS IT TRAVELS DOWN THE RACE COURSE. THAT'S WHY THE TRUCKS ARE CALLED CHASE TRUCKS. NOW PUT ON TOP OF THAT THE FACTORY THAT IF YOU DON'T BRING IT WITH YOU, YOU AIN'T GOT IT, YOU END UP PUTTING A LOT OF GEAR INTO THE BACK OF THIS TRUCK. YOU HAUL SPARE TIRES FOR BOTH THE RACE CAR AND THE TRUCK. A WHOLE BUNCH OF TOOLS AND A PILE OF SPARE PARTS, FUEL FOR BOTH VEHICLES. FINDING SPACE FOR ALL OF THIS CAN BE A LITTLE BIT CHALLENGING.
(CHRIS)>> AND EVEN THOUGH THIS TRUCK HAS A SERVICE BED LIKE MOST CHASE TRUCKS, YOU CAN RUN OUT OF ROOM PRETTY FAST WHEN YOU START LOADING IT UP GETTING READY FOR A RACE.
(IAN)>> THAT'S WHY CHASE TRUCKS ARE USUALLY OUTFITTED WITH A GOOD, STRONG ROOF RACK. JUST TO GIVE YOU A LITTLE BIT EXTRA STORAGE SPACE. NOW OURS WILL BE BUILT OUT OF INCH AND FIVEEIGHTHS TUBING ANCHORED TO THE SERVICE BED AND TRAVELING UP OVER THE TOP OF THE CAB.
(CHRIS)>> UNLIKE YOUR TYPICAL STREET TRUCK, NOTHING GOES ON A CHASE TRUCK WITHOUT A SPECIFIC PURPOSE. YEAH, THESE BUSHWACKER POCKET STYLE FENDER FLARES WILL MAKE THE TRUCK LOOK GREAT BUT THEY'LL ALSO PROTECT THE WINDSHIELD FROM MUD, SAND, AND WATER WHEN WE'RE CHASING THE RACE CAR. AFTER CLEANING THE FLARES AND APPLYING A GOOD COAT OF DUPLICOLOR BLACK PAINT, THE CHROME HEAD FASTENERS AND LOCK NUTS ARE INSTALLED. THE RUBBER GASKET IS APPLIED TO THE EDGE OF THE FLARE, AND THEY ARE BOLTED ONTO THE FENDER USING THE ORIGINAL MOUNTING HOLES.
(IAN)>> NOW BEFORE I PULL THIS RACK OFF, FINISH WELD IT, AND GIVE IT A COAT OF PAINT TO MATCH THOSE FLARES, WE WANT TO ADD SOME TABS FOR SOME OFF ROAD LIGHTING. NOW SOME OF THE OFF ROAD LIGHTING ON A CHASE TRUCK SERVES THE SAME PURPOSE THAT IT DOES ON THE RACE CAR. IT'S THERE TO SEE YOUR WAY DOWN THE RACE COURSE AS YOU'RE FOLLOWING THE RACE TEAM. AND TO DO THAT WE'RE GONNA INSTALL ONE OF THESE 42 INCH LONG BLACK NIGHT LIGHTING LED BARS UP FRONT. IT'LL BE SUPER BRIGHT AND GIVE US LOTS OF LIGHT UP OVER THE HOOD ALL THE WAY DOWN THE COURSE. BUT WE'RE GONNA ADD MORE LIGHTING THAN JUST THAT. WE WANT TO HAVE LIGHTS THAT'LL WORK AS WORK LIGHTS WHEN WE'RE IN THE PITS. SO FOR THAT WE GOT THESE SMALLER LITTLE BLACK NIGHT PANELS. THEY'LL SIMPLY MOUNT OFF THE SIDE OF THE TRUCK AND FACE DOWN. THAT WAY WHEN YOU'RE WORKING ON THE RACE CAR YOU'LL HAVE A LOT OF WORK LIGHT RIGHT DOWN IN THE PITS. NOW THAT IS ONE OF THE BENEFITS TO USING LED LIGHTS. BECAUSE THEY HAVE SUCH A LOW AMP DRAW WHEN THEY'RE LIT, YOU DON'T HAVE TO HAVE THE TRUCK RUNNING. YOU CAN HAVE THE TRUCK SHUT DOWN, HAVE ALL THE LIGHTS ON, SEE WHAT YOU'RE DOING, LET THE TEAM GO TO THE PITS AND CARRY ON AND THE TRUCK WILL STILL HAVE ENOUGH JUICE IN THE BATTERIES TO FIRE UP AND HEAD ON TO THE NEXT PIT. THE FRONT LIGHT WILL HAVE TABS WELDED DIRECTLY ONTO THE ROOF BAR. THE SIDE LIGHTS ARE GONNA BE CLAMPED ON TO THE ROOF RACK. THAT WAY WE CAN FINE TUNE THEIR LOCATION DEPENDING ON WHERE THE CAR IS IN THE PITS.

(IAN)>> NOW SO FAR TODAY WE'VE ALREADY SHOWN YOU SOME OF THE THINGS WE PLAN TO CARRY IN THE BACK OF OUR TRUCK. THINGS LIKE SPARE TIRES, SPARE PARTS, AND EVEN TOOLS, BUT THAT'S THE SAME TYPE OF THING YOU'D THROW JUST IN BACK OF YOUR TOW RIG IF YOU WERE GOING OUT FOR A WEEKEND OF WHEELING. NOW THERE'S SOME VERY DEDICATED PIECES OF EQUIPMENT YOU'RE GONNA FIND IN A CHASE TRUCK SPECIFICALLY, AND THIS IS THE FIRST ONE. A VERY LARGE 30 POUND CO TWO TANK. NOW THIS TANK IS CHARGED WITH CO TWO AND THEN THE REGULATOR SYSTEM ON THE TOP BLEEDS IT OFF AS COMPRESSED AIR. A TANK LIKE THIS CAN BLEED OFF 90 PSI AND RUN AIR TOOLS ALL DAY LONG IN YOUR PIT OR EVEN BE USED TO REFILL TIRES ON A RACE CAR. NOW AT THE SAME TIME THE NEXT ITEM YOU'LL FIND IS A COMPLETE NITROGEN FILL STATION. NOW THIS REGULATOR FROM POWER TANK WILL SCREW INTO A FULL SIZE BOTTLE OF NITROGEN GAS. AND THEN THE EXTRA LONG HOSE ALLOWS YOU TO TAKE THAT NITROGEN GAS OUT INTO THE PIT AND COMPLETELY SERVICE ALL THE SHOCKS ON THE RACE CAR, BOTH THE COIL OVERS AND THE BYPASSES. THAT WAY YOU CAN COMPLETELY CHANGE THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM ON THE CAR WITHOUT HAVING TO TEAR IT ALL APART AND BRING IT BACK TO THE SHOP.

(IAN)>> ANOTHER PIECE OF EQUIPMENT THAT YOU'LL ONLY FIND IN A CHASE TRUCK IS NOT IN THE BACK OF THE TRUCK AT ALL. IT'S UP HERE IN THE CAB, AND THAT IS A DEDICATED COMMUNICATION SYSTEM SO YOU CAN TALK TO THE RACE CAR. IT STARTS WITH A GOOD BASE STATION RADIO LIKE THIS 50 WATT UNIT THAT WE GOT FROM RUGGED RADIOS. NOW THIS IS NOT A CB RADIO. THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE THESE IS THEY'RE A BUSINESS TO BUSINESS TYPE OF COMMUNICATION. THEY OPERATE BETWEEN 134 AND A 174 MEGAHERTZ, AND THE CHANNELS ARE PREPROGRAMMED INTO BOTH RADIOS BY RUGGED BEFORE YOU INSTALL THEM. (IAN)>> TODAY WE'VE GOT OUR DIESEL POWERED SERVICE TRUCK BACK IN THE SHOP. A VEHICLE THAT WAS ONCE USED TO TAKE CARE OF CRANES ON CONSTRUCTION SITES HAS BEEN GIVEN A NEW LIFE AS A CHASE TRUCK TO SUPPORT DESERT RACE TEAMS. NOW LAST TIME WE HAD THIS RIG IN THE SHOP, WE SHOWED YOU GUYS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BUILDING A CHASE TRUCK AND JUST BUILDING A LIFTED STREET TRUCK. WE THREW AN AFTERMARKET SUSPENSION SYSTEM AT THIS, AS WELL AS A BUNCH OF STEERING UPGRADES TO ENSURE IT COULD HANDLE SOME HARDCORE OFF ROADING. TODAY THE FIRST THING THAT WE'RE GONNA DO IS ADD A BUNCH OF POWER UNDERNEATH THE HOOD OF THIS TRUCK.
(CHRIS)>> THEN WE'LL CLEAN UP THIS SERVICE BED AND ADD ALL THE COOL STUFF THAT YOU WOULD FIND IN THE BACK OF A CHASE TRUCK, LIKE THE TOOLS YOU NEED AND WHAT YOU HAVE TO CARRY TO SUPPORT YOUR RACE TEAM.
(IAN)>> WE REMOVED THE FACTORY AIR BOX FROM THE MOTOR BECAUSE IT IS VERY RESTRICTIVE. WE'RE GONNA REPLACE IT WITH A HIGH FLOWING AFE UNIT AND REUSABLE FILTER ELEMENT. BUT THE REAL REASON THAT WE PULLED IT OUT WAS SO WE COULD GAIN ACCESS TO THE INTAKE IN OUR MOTOR AND ADD TO THIS SNOW PERFORMANCE MPG MAX SYSTEM. NOW I'M SURE YOU GUYS ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE THEORY BEHIND WET METHANOL INJECTION. ON A DIESEL MOTOR YOU SIMPLY INJECT A MIXTURE OF WATER AND METHANOL TO GET MORE POWER OUT OF THE ENGINE. BUT THE MPG MAX SYSTEM IS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT. IT USES A NEW STYLE OF CONTROLLER THAT SLOWLY ADDS THE METHANOL AND THE WATER TO THE ENGINE ALL ACROSS THE POWER BAND. EVEN WHEN YOU HAVE THE CRUISE CONTROL APPLIED. THAT HELPS YOU PICK UP A LITTLE BIT EXTRA MILEAGE WHEN YOU'RE DRIVING THE TRUCK, USUALLY AROUND ONE TO THREE MILES PER GALLON. BUT THEN AT THE SAME TIME WHEN YOU REALLY LOAD THAT MOTOR DOWN AND NEED THE EXTRA POWER, THIS CAN ADD UP TO 70 HORSEPOWER INSIDE THE ENGINE. THE NOZZLES FOR THE WATER/METHANOL INJECTION NEED TO BE INSTALLED AFTER THE INTERCOOLER, JUST BEFORE THE AIR CHARGE ENTERS THE ENGINE. THE BEST PLACE TO INSTALL THEM ON OUR DIESEL IS IN THE EGR BRIDGE JUST AFTER THE AIR HEATER. WITH IT REMOVED FROM THE MOTOR, WE'LL BOTH DRILL AND TAP FOR THE NEW NOZZLES. THEN REINSTALL THEM, MOUNT THE WATER/METHANOL TANK IN THE BACK OF THE TRUCK, RUN THE FEED TUBES OVER TO THE PUMP, AND HOOK UP THE CONTROLLER. THE COLD AIR KIT REPLACES THE ENTIRE FACTORY AIR BOSS ASSEMBLY, AND REUSES THE STOCK MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR. THE CONCENTRATED MIXTURE THAT WE'RE GONNA RUN IN OUR SYSTEM IS FROM SNOW PERFORMANCE AND IT'S CALLED BOOST JUICE, AND IT BUILDS POWER A COUPLE DIFFERENT WAYS. OBVIOUSLY THE METHANOL IN THERE IS FLAMMABLE. ADD THAT TO ANY ENGINE AND YOU'RE GONNA BUILD MORE POWER, BUT THE WATER IS JUST AS IMPORTANT TO A DIESEL. THAT WATER IS GONNA HELP KEEP OUR EGT'S, OR EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURES, AT A REASONABLE RATE. IF YOU CAN KEEP THOSE DOWN, YOU CAN PUT MORE TURBO BOOST TO THE ENGINE AND BUILD MORE POWER. NOW OUR MPG MAX KIT COMES WITH A PYROMETER, WHICH IS SIMPLY A PROBE THAT WILL GO IN THE EXHAUST BEFORE THE TURBO. IT'LL MEASURE THOSE EGT'S AND WORK WITH THE CONTROLLER TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING STAYS AT A REASONABLE LEVEL. IF YOU COAT THE DRILL BIT WITH HEAVY GREASE BEFORE YOU DRILL, YOU CAN GET AWAY WITHOUT REMOVE THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD. ALL THE CHIPS FROM DRILLING WILL STICK TO THE HEAVY GREASE. DO THE SAME THING TO THE TAP, AND CLEAN THE HOLE OUT WITH A MAGNET BEFORE INSTALLING THE PIPE FITTING.
(CHRIS)>> WITH THE ENGINE MAKING MORE POWER, WE NEED TO DEAL WITH THE EXHAUST ON OUR CHASE TRUCK. THIS MAGNAFLOW FIVE INCH FULL STAINLESS STEEL EXHAUST IS MANDREL BENT TO IMPROVE FLOW, AND INCLUDES A FLOW THROUGH MUFFLER WITH NO RESTRICTIONS. THIS KIT IS A TURBO BACKED SYSTEM THAT REPLACES EVERY PIECE OF EXHAUST FROM THE DOWN PIPE. THE STAINLESS STEEL CONSTRUCTION MEANS IT'LL LAST THE LIFETIME OF THIS TRUCK. THE HUGE DIAMETER AND MANDREL BENDS ALSO HELP KEEP OUR EGT'S DOWN.

IT'S GONNA START WITH A DIABLO SPORT TRINITY 1,000 AND A CUSTOM SOFTWARE UPLOAD. NOW WHY YOU CAN BUILD SO MUCH POWER WITH A MODERN DIESEL USING JUST ELECTRONICS HAS TO DO WITH HOW THE DIESEL ENGINE WORKS. AND ONCE YOU UNDERSTAND THAT IT ALL MAKES SENSE. A DIESEL ENGINE USES WHAT'S CALLED DIRECT INJECTION TECHNOLOGY. NOW THAT MEANS WE CAN LOOK FOR A LOT OF POWER AND NOT WORRY ABOUT ANY DETONATION INSIDE THE CYLINDER LIKE YOU'D HAVE WITH A GASOLINE ENGINE. NOW WHAT CAUSES DETONATION IN A GAS ENGINE HAS TO DO WITH HOW THE ENGINE WORKS. WHEN THE PISTON TRAVELS DOWN THE CYLINDER, IT'S DRAWING IN BOTH FUEL AND AIR AND MIXING THEM TOGETHER. THEN DURING THE COMPRESSION STROKE IT'S TAKING THAT MIXTURE AND COMPRESSING IT UP INTO THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER, AND PUTTING IT UNDER A LOT OF PRESSURE AND IT'S OPERATING AT A HIGH HEAT. THEN THE SPARK PLUG FIRES, IT IGNITES THAT FUEL AND AIR MIXTURE AND PUSHES THE PISTON BACK DOWN THE CYLINDER, AND THAT'S WHERE WE BUILD OUR EXTRA POWER. NOW THE PROBLEM COMES WHEN WE'RE LOOKING FOR MORE POWER. MAYBE YOU WANT MORE FUEL IN THERE, AND BY BOOSTING THE TURBO CHARGER YOU'RE GONNA GET MORE AIR. BUT THAT MAKES THE MIXTURE A LOT MORE VOLATILE. WHEN THE PISTON IS TRAVELING UP THE CYLINDER ON THE COMPRESSION STROKE, THE MIXTURE CAN ACTUALLY PREIGNITE JUST BECAUSE OF THE HEAT AND PRESSURE ON THE COMPRESSION STROKE. THAT SMALL FLAME FRONT WILL MOVE ACROSS THE CYLINDER. THEN THE SPARK PLUG WILL FIRE AND THOSE TWO FLAME FRONTS WILL COLLIDE, AND THAT'S WHAT CAUSES DETONATION FOR SPARK KNOT. NOW IT MIGHT NOT SOUND LIKE A BIG DEAL, BUT THERE'S ENOUGH PRESSURE IN THERE TO CAUSE DAMAGE TO INTERNAL COMPONENTS INSIDE A GASOLINE ENGINE. NOW DIESELS DON'T HAVE THAT PROBLEM BECAUSE REMEMBER THE INJECTOR IS BASICALLY THE SPARK PLUG. WHEN THE PISTON'S TRAVELING DOWN ON THE INTAKE STROKE, ALL THAT'S COMING INTO THE CYLINDER IS JUST AIR. THERE'S NO FUEL IN HERE YET. SO WHEN THE PISTON TRAVELS UP ON THE COMPRESSION STROKE, ALL IT'S DOING IS COMPRESSING AIR. THERE'S NOTHING THERE TO IGNITE. THEN WHEN YOU WANT IT TO IGNITE THE INJECTOR WILL FIRE AT THE PRECISE POINT, CREATE THE FLAME FRONT INSTANTLY AND PUSH THE PISTON BACK DOWN. NOW BECAUSE THERE'S NO FUEL IN THERE, WE DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT DETONATION. WE CAN ADD LOTS OF BOOST, LOTS OF FUEL, BUILD MONSTER POWER. THE FIRST STEP IN GETTING MORE POWER OUT OF OUR DIESEL IS TO HOOK THE TRINITY TO UP TO THE ALDL CONNECTOR UNDERNEATH THE DASH. AFTER GOING THROUGH THE VEHICLE SELECTION PROCESS WE CAN EITHER UPLOAD A TUNE RIGHT FROM THE HAND HELD, OR HOOK IT UP TO OUR LAPTOP AND BUILD A TUNE THAT'S ALL OUR OWN. WE'RE ALSO GOING TO INSTALL A FLEECE PERFORMANCE TURBO BRAKE SYSTEM TO GIVE US FULL CONTROL OVER OUR TRUCK'S VARIABLE VEIN TURBOCHARGER. THE HARNESS INSTALLS USING A JUMPER PACK IN THE TRUCK'S MAIN HARNESS ASSEMBLY. TO CONTROL THE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH, THE CONTROL WIRE MUST BE TAPPED INTO AT THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE, AND THE THROTTLE POSITION SIGNAL IS TAPPED INTO AT THE PEDAL HARNESS. THE TURBO BRAKE BASICALLY GIVES US FULL CONTROL OVER THE VEINS INSIDE OUR VARIABLE VEIN TURBOCHARGER. IF WE WANT MORE POWER OR MORE BOOST WE CAN SIMPLY DIAL IT UP RIGHT HERE ON THE DASH, HELP PULL A HEAVY LOAD AWAY FROM A DEAD STOP. BUT AT THE SAME TIME IT ALSO HELPS WITH BRAKING. UNDER HEAVY BRAKING IT'LL START TO CLOSE THE VEINS DOWN INSIDE THE TURBOCHARGER AND APPLY THE TORQUE CONVERTER. KINDA WORKING LIKE A JAKE BRAKE. NOW BECAUSE WE INSTALLED THE TURBO BRAKE AND THE SNOW PERFORMANCE KIT, THAT IS WHY WE HAVE THE CUSTOM TUNE PUT TOGETHER FOR OUR TRINITY 1,000. YOU COULD SIMPLY USE AN OFF THE SHELF TUNE REALLY WITH NO PROBLEM, BUT BECAUSE WE ADDED THESE TWO OTHER COMPONENTS, WE WORKED WITH DIABLO SPORT AND THEY PUT TOGETHER A PACKAGE THAT WOULD WORK IDEAL FOR US. THAT'S THE NICE THING ABOUT THIS TUNER. YOU CAN SIMPLY INSTALL IT RIGHT NOW AND GO. IF YOU ADD MORE POWER ADDERS LATER ON, YOU CAN GO INSIDE, CHANGE THAT TUNE TO SUIT YOUR TRUCK PERFECTLY.

THAT'S WHY THE TRUCKS ARE CALLED CHASE TRUCKS. NOW PUT ON TOP OF THAT THE FACTORY THAT IF YOU DON'T BRING IT WITH YOU, YOU AIN'T GOT IT, YOU END UP PUTTING A LOT OF GEAR INTO THE BACK OF THIS TRUCK. YOU HAUL SPARE TIRES FOR BOTH THE RACE CAR AND THE TRUCK. A WHOLE BUNCH OF TOOLS AND A PILE OF SPARE PARTS, FUEL FOR BOTH VEHICLES. FINDING SPACE FOR ALL OF THIS CAN BE A LITTLE BIT CHALLENGING.

(IAN)>> THAT'S WHY CHASE TRUCKS ARE USUALLY OUTFITTED WITH A GOOD, STRONG ROOF RACK. JUST TO GIVE YOU A LITTLE BIT EXTRA STORAGE SPACE. NOW OURS WILL BE BUILT OUT OF INCH AND FIVEEIGHTHS TUBING ANCHORED TO THE SERVICE BED AND TRAVELING UP OVER THE TOP OF THE CAB.
(CHRIS)>> UNLIKE YOUR TYPICAL STREET TRUCK, NOTHING GOES ON A CHASE TRUCK WITHOUT A SPECIFIC PURPOSE. YEAH, THESE BUSHWACKER POCKET STYLE FENDER FLARES WILL MAKE THE TRUCK LOOK GREAT BUT THEY'LL ALSO PROTECT THE WINDSHIELD FROM MUD, SAND, AND WATER WHEN WE'RE CHASING THE RACE CAR. AFTER CLEANING THE FLARES AND APPLYING A GOOD COAT OF DUPLICOLOR BLACK PAINT, THE CHROME HEAD FASTENERS AND LOCK NUTS ARE INSTALLED. THE RUBBER GASKET IS APPLIED TO THE EDGE OF THE FLARE, AND THEY ARE BOLTED ONTO THE FENDER USING THE ORIGINAL MOUNTING HOLES.
(IAN)>> NOW BEFORE I PULL THIS RACK OFF, FINISH WELD IT, AND GIVE IT A COAT OF PAINT TO MATCH THOSE FLARES, WE WANT TO ADD SOME TABS FOR SOME OFF ROAD LIGHTING. NOW SOME OF THE OFF ROAD LIGHTING ON A CHASE TRUCK SERVES THE SAME PURPOSE THAT IT DOES ON THE RACE CAR. IT'S THERE TO SEE YOUR WAY DOWN THE RACE COURSE AS YOU'RE FOLLOWING THE RACE TEAM. AND TO DO THAT WE'RE GONNA INSTALL ONE OF THESE 42 INCH LONG BLACK NIGHT LIGHTING LED BARS UP FRONT. IT'LL BE SUPER BRIGHT AND GIVE US LOTS OF LIGHT UP OVER THE HOOD ALL THE WAY DOWN THE COURSE. BUT WE'RE GONNA ADD MORE LIGHTING THAN JUST THAT. WE WANT TO HAVE LIGHTS THAT'LL WORK AS WORK LIGHTS WHEN WE'RE IN THE PITS. SO FOR THAT WE GOT THESE SMALLER LITTLE BLACK NIGHT PANELS. THEY'LL SIMPLY MOUNT OFF THE SIDE OF THE TRUCK AND FACE DOWN. THAT WAY WHEN YOU'RE WORKING ON THE RACE CAR YOU'LL HAVE A LOT OF WORK LIGHT RIGHT DOWN IN THE PITS. NOW THAT IS ONE OF THE BENEFITS TO USING LED LIGHTS. BECAUSE THEY HAVE SUCH A LOW AMP DRAW WHEN THEY'RE LIT, YOU DON'T HAVE TO HAVE THE TRUCK RUNNING. YOU CAN HAVE THE TRUCK SHUT DOWN, HAVE ALL THE LIGHTS ON, SEE WHAT YOU'RE DOING, LET THE TEAM GO TO THE PITS AND CARRY ON AND THE TRUCK WILL STILL HAVE ENOUGH JUICE IN THE BATTERIES TO FIRE UP AND HEAD ON TO THE NEXT PIT. THE FRONT LIGHT WILL HAVE TABS WELDED DIRECTLY ONTO THE ROOF BAR. THE SIDE LIGHTS ARE GONNA BE CLAMPED ON TO THE ROOF RACK. THAT WAY WE CAN FINE TUNE THEIR LOCATION DEPENDING ON WHERE THE CAR IS IN THE PITS.

THINGS LIKE SPARE TIRES, SPARE PARTS, AND EVEN TOOLS, BUT THAT'S THE SAME TYPE OF THING YOU'D THROW JUST IN BACK OF YOUR TOW RIG IF YOU WERE GOING OUT FOR A WEEKEND OF WHEELING. NOW THERE'S SOME VERY DEDICATED PIECES OF EQUIPMENT YOU'RE GONNA FIND IN A CHASE TRUCK SPECIFICALLY, AND THIS IS THE FIRST ONE. A VERY LARGE 30 POUND CO TWO TANK. NOW THIS TANK IS CHARGED WITH CO TWO AND THEN THE REGULATOR SYSTEM ON THE TOP BLEEDS IT OFF AS COMPRESSED AIR. A TANK LIKE THIS CAN BLEED OFF 90 PSI AND RUN AIR TOOLS ALL DAY LONG IN YOUR PIT OR EVEN BE USED TO REFILL TIRES ON A RACE CAR. NOW AT THE SAME TIME THE NEXT ITEM YOU'LL FIND IS A COMPLETE NITROGEN FILL STATION. NOW THIS REGULATOR FROM POWER TANK WILL SCREW INTO A FULL SIZE BOTTLE OF NITROGEN GAS. AND THEN THE EXTRA LONG HOSE ALLOWS YOU TO TAKE THAT NITROGEN GAS OUT INTO THE PIT AND COMPLETELY SERVICE ALL THE SHOCKS ON THE RACE CAR, BOTH THE COIL OVERS AND THE BYPASSES. THAT WAY YOU CAN COMPLETELY CHANGE THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM ON THE CAR WITHOUT HAVING TO TEAR IT ALL APART AND BRING IT BACK TO THE SHOP.

NOW THIS IS NOT A CB RADIO. THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE THESE IS THEY'RE A BUSINESS TO BUSINESS TYPE OF COMMUNICATION. THEY OPERATE BETWEEN 134 AND A 174 MEGAHERTZ, AND THE CHANNELS ARE PREPROGRAMMED INTO BOTH RADIOS BY RUGGED BEFORE YOU INSTALL THEM. THAT WAY YOU'LL BE ABLE TO TALK TO EACH OTHER AND NOT WORRY ABOUT ANYONE STEPPING ON YOUR CONVERSATION.
