(ANNOUNCER)>> TODAY RYAN'S
WORKING ON A CLASSIC. THIS '54 CHEVY IS GETTING
A NEW ALUMINUM RADIATOR AND A CUSTOM
MADE FAN SHROUD. THEN WE'RE GONNA DO A TEST
AND TUNE SESSION WHERE THEY'RE SHOOTING TO MAKE
MORE POWER WITH FORD'S NEW ECOBOOST ENGINE. IT'S ALL TODAY
HERE ON TRUCK TECH.
(RYAN)>> HEY GUYS, WELCOME TO TRUCK TECH. TODAY WE'VE GOT A CLASSIC IN THE SHOP. THIS IS A 1954 CHEVY PICK UP THAT'S SEEN ITS FAIR
SHARE OF MODIFICATIONS. NOW THE OWNER OF THE VEHICLE IS A FRIEND OF OURS, AND SHE WANTED US TO TAKE CARE OF A COUPLE OF SMALL ISSUES WITH THE TRUCK. BUT BEFORE WE GET STARTED, LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF THE CUSTOM WORK ON THIS RIDE. NOW UNDER THE HOOD THE ORIGINAL SIX CYLINDER ENGINE IS LONG GONE AND I CAN SEE WHY. ACCORDING TO THE PLACARD ON THE DOOR JAMB, IT WAS
RATED AT JUST 105 HORSEPOWER AT 3,600 RPM. AND IT'S SINCE BEEN REPLACED BY THIS 350. NOW IT'S GOT AN HEI DISTRIBUTOR, EDELBROCK CARB, INTAKE, AND VALVE COVERS, AND SOME
CUSTOM PAINT WORK. NOW THIS WAS AN ABANDONED PROJECT THAT THE CURRENT OWNER WANTS TO FINISH AND TURN INTO A DRIVER. NOW UNDER THE HOOD THINGS LOOK PRETTY DECENT BUT IT COULD USE SOME TIDYING UP JUST TO CLEAN THINGS UP A LITTLE BIT. NOW OVERALL THE BED ON THIS TRUCK IS IN PRETTY GOOD CONDITION. THE MEDIUM STAIN ON THE WOOD, LOOKS GOOD AGAINST THE BLACK PAINT.
THEY'VE GOT NICE FASTENERS HOLDING THE FENDERS ON, AND I'M SURE THE WOOD'S BEEN REPLACED ONCE IN THE VEHICLE'S LIFETIME. AND WHILE IT'S NOT PERFECT, IT'S PERFECT FOR A DRIVER. NOW THE INTERIOR IS REALLY NICE. IT LOOKS LIKE SOMEBODY'S SPENT SOME TIME AND MONEY IN HERE.
IT LOOKS LIKE THEY'VE SWAPPED IN A SPLIT BENCH SEAT AND RECOVERED IT, MADE SOME CUSTOM DOOR PANELS AND DOOR SURROUNDS. EVEN CARRIED THE THEME OVER TO THE HEADLINER. IT'S GOT NEW CLASSIC LOOKING GAUGES, A LATER MODEL GM COLUMN, AND A NEW BUT OLD LOOKING RADIO. NOW TO GET THE TRUCK'S LOWERED RIDE HEIGHT, IT LOOKS LIKE SOMEBODY SWAPPED IN A SECTION OF A SUBFRAME OR A FRAME FROM A LATER MODEL GM VEHICLE.
SAME FOR THE REAR, THEY SWAPPED IN SOME DIFFERENT SPRINGS AND MOUNTED THEM A LITTLE INBOARD OF THE FRAME. NOW IT'S FUNCTIONAL, BUT IT COULD BE A LITTLE BIT CLEANER.
THIS GROUND STRAP IS JUST DANGLING IN BETWEEN THE AARM AND THE FRAME. IT CAN BE CLEANED UP AND MADE MORE AESTHETICALLY PLEASING, AND MORE RELIABLE. BUT WHAT WE'RE GONNA FOCUS ON TODAY IS THE COOLING SYSTEM.
NOW THE COOLANT IN THIS RADIATOR DOESN'T LOOK THAT BAD OR THAT OLD, AND THEY USED TO RECOMMEND A DRAIN
AND FLUSH INTERVAL FOR COOLING SYSTEMS OF EVERY TWO YEARS. OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF DECADES THEY'VE INCREASED THAT INTERVAL AND WITH THAT COMES A GREATER LIKELIHOOD OF HAVING ELECTROLYSIS IN THE COOLING SYSTEM. WHAT HAPPENS IS THE COOLANT, CHEMICALS, AND ADDITIVES BREAK DOWN OVER TIME. THE COOLANT GETS SLIGHTLY ACIDIC, YOU'VE GOT LESS CORROSION RESISTANCE, AND ONCE THAT HAPPENS, WELL
YOU'VE GOT ELECTROLYSIS, WHICH IS BASICALLY A SMALL ELECTRICAL CHARGE IN THE COOLANT ITSELF. ONCE THAT HAPPENS, YOU'VE GOT SMALL PARTICLES OF METAL MOVING FROM ONE SURFACE TO THE OTHER. YOU USUALLY DON'T KNOW IT'S HAPPENING UNTIL YOU GET MYSTERY LEAKS IN THE HEATER CORE OR RADIATOR, AREAS WHERE THE METAL IS REALLY THIN AND IT CAN WEAR THROUGH. AND YOU CAN TEST FOR ELECTROLYSIS USING A MULTIMETER.
ALL YOU'VE GOT TO DO IS SET THE METER TO D/C VOLTAGE, ATTACH YOUR NEGATIVE LEAD OF THE METER TO A GOOD CHASSIS GROUND, AND THEN TAKE THE POSITIVE LEAD AND JUST PUT IT DOWN INTO THE LIQUID OR THE COOLANT. WE'VE GOT POINT ONEFIVE VOLTS IN JUST THE COOLANT. NOW IF YOU GET A READYING THAT'S POINT ONE VOLTS OR LESS, THAT'S FINE, THAT'S NORMAL OPERATION. IF YOU'VE GOT POINT THREE VOLTS OR MORE, WELL IT'S SOMETHING TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT BECAUSE THE COOLANT IS JUST GOING TO SLOWLY EAT AWAY AT EXPENSIVE ALUMINUM PARTS. SO A DRAIN AND FLUSH IS A GOOD IDEA. NOW SINCE WE'RE GONNA BE REPLACING OUR RADIATOR, NOW WOULD BE A PERFECT TIME TO DO JUST THAT.
[ drill spinning ]
(RYAN)>> LET'S SEE IF WE CAN WRESTLE THIS THING OUT OF HERE. AS I LIFT IT UP, JUST ROTATE THE FAN SO WE CAN GET IT AROUND THAT WATER OUTLET.
ALRIGHT, THE WORLD'S BIGGEST RADIATOR! NOW THE RADIATOR THAT CAME OUT OF THE TRUCK, WELL WE'RE NOT EVEN SURE IF IT'S STOCK CAUSE IT LOOKS LIKE SOMEBODY KINDA COBBLED SOME STUFF
TOGETHER TO MAKE IT WORK.
AND IT WAS FUNCTIONAL, SO HARD TO ARGUE WITH RESULTS.
BUT THE RADIATOR WE'RE GONNA BE GOING BACK IN WITH IS AN ALL ALUMINUM, LIGHT WEIGHT, AND EFFICIENT RADIATOR THAT WE PICKED UP FROM
BROTHER'S TRUCK PARTS. IT'S GOT A BUILT IN TRANSMISSION COOLER, SOMETHING THE FACTORY NEVER HAD, AND IT'S A THREE ROW DESIGN FOR EXTRA CAPACITY AND COOLING ABILITY. AND LIKE I MENTIONED, IT'S LIGHT. NOW THE RADIATOR THAT CAME IN THE TRUCK LOOKS LIKE
IT WEIGHS IN AT JUST UNDER 30 POUNDS. AND THE NEW REPLACEMENT RADIATOR WEIGHS LESS THAN 15, NOT BAD. NOW OUR BROTHER'S TRUCK PARTS RADIATOR ALSO HAS MORE COOLING FINS PER INCH THAN THE OLD ONE DOES. MORE FINS EQUALS MORE SURFACE AREA, WHICH ALLOWS THE RADIATOR TO DISSIPATE MORE HEAT, MAKING IT MORE EFFECTIVE. NOW ONE LAST THING WE WANT TO DO IS PROTECT THESE COOLING FINS FROM DAMAGE DURING INSTALLATION. THESE FINS GET FOLDED OVER, AIR FLOW DOESN'T PASS OVER THEM, AND KINDA DEFEATS THE PURPOSE. SO A LITTLE BIT OF CARDBOARD WILL PREVENT THAT FROM HAPPENING. NOW WITH BOTH SIDES OF OUR NEW RADIATOR PROTECTED, YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED THE ORIGINAL RADIATOR HAD CONTACT MARKS IN IT WHERE THE BOLTS HOLDING THE MECHANICAL FAN ON HAD BUMPED INTO THE RADIATOR.
SO TO PREVENT DAMAGE FROM HAPPENING TO OUR NEW RADIATOR, WE'RE JUST INSTALLING A SMALLER
MECHANICAL FAN SPACER. THAT WAY IF THE ENGINE MOVES AROUND A LITTLE BIT
UNDER ACCELERATION OR BRAKING, WELL IT DOESN'T DAMAGE OUR NEW PIECE.
(RYAN)>> HEY GUYS, WELCOME BACK TO THE SHOP. WELL WE'VE GOT OUR NEW ALUMINUM RADIATOR LOOSELY BOLTED IN PLACE. AND THE ENGINE IT'S GOING TO BE KEEPING COOL WAS JUST A MILD 350. IT DOESN'T MAKE A TON OF HORSEPOWER, AND THUS DOESN'T MAKE A TON OF HEAT. SO IN BETWEEN THE MECHANICAL FAN AND THE NEW RADIATOR, IT PROBABLY WOULDN'T HAVE ANY PROBLEM KEEPING THIS TRUCK COOL. BUT EVERY FAN REALLY DOES NEED A FANS SHROUD, WHETHER ELECTRIC OR MECHANICAL.
IT JUST MAKES THE FAN THAT MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE AND HELPS DIRECT AIR FLOW ACROSS THE RADIATOR. PLUS HAVE THESE SPINNING BLADES ON THE FRONT ON THE ENGINE, WELL IT'S NOT THE SAFEST THING IN THE WORLD. SO A SMALL SHROUD MIGHT PREVENT SOMEBODY FROM STICKING THEIR HAND DOWN IN THE BLADES. WITH THE RADIATOR STILL IN PLACE, I'M JUST USING A MECHANICAL FAN AND A MARKER TO GIVE ME AN IDEA OF WHAT KIND OF CLEARANCE THE FAN NEEDS. THEN I'M JUST GONNA ADD SOME TEMPLATE CARDBOARD TO THE EDGES OF THE EXISTING CARDBOARD AND FORM IT TO THE RADIATOR. GET THIS TAPE OFF HERE, CUT IT OUT, TRANSFER OUR PATTERN OVER TO ALUMINUM. BUT FIRST I'M CUTTING OFF ALL THE EXCESS CARDBOARD AND TRIMMING OUT THE SHAPE OF THE FAN SHROUD. NOW KEEP IN MIND THE ENGINE MOVES AROUND UNDERNEATH THE HOOD. SO YOU WANT PLENTY OF CLEARANCE FOR THE FAN SHROUD.
NOW ALONG WITH THE MARKING THE SHAPE OF OUR NEW FAN SHROUD, I'M ALSO MARKING WHERE I'M GONNA MAKE THE BRAKES IN THE ALUMINUM.
AND JUST TO MAKE SURE I CAN SEE WHAT I'M DOING, I'M DOUBLING UP ON THE MARK WHERE I'M GONNA MAKE THE 90 DEGREE BEND.
THEN WE TOOK THE ALUMINUM OVER TO OUR WOODWARD FAB METAL WORKING TOOLS. AND MADE A COUPLE OF 90 DEGREE BENDS. NOW YOU CAN GET THIS JOB DONE WITH SOME ANGLE IRON CLAMPED TO THE EDGE OF A TABLE, BUT THE RESULTS PROBABLY WON'T BE AS SHARP. THEN WE FLIP THINGS OVER AND MADE A COUPLE OF 90 DEGREE BENDS IN THE OTHER DIRECTION TO FORM THE FLANGE. THEN LOPED OFF THE EXCESS.
THEN USING OUR BAND SAW, WE CUT THE ARC OUT WHERE THE FAN'S GONNA GO. THEN I'M USING OUR SHRINKER/STRETCHER, AND YOU CAN SEE HOW IT WORKS HERE, TO FORM UP THE FLANGE THAT'S GONNA ACT AS OUR FAN SHROUD FINGER GUARD. JUST A SIMPLE PIECE OF ALUMINUM WITH A 90 DEGREE BEND IN IT. AND BY USING THE STRETCHER, WELL IT JUST STRETCHES OUT THE ALUMINUM, FORCING A RADIUS IN THIS PIECE OF METAL. I'M GONNA GO SEE HOW IT MATCHES UP. ALRIGHT, NOW MY SHROUD FLANGE, LOOKS LIKE IT LINES UP PRETTY GOOD WITH THE RADIUS WE HAVE CUT. BUT SINCE THIS PART OF THE FLANGE IS GOING TO GO UNDERNEATH THE REST OF THE SHROUD, IT'S GOT TO BE TRIMMED A LITTLE BIT TO FIT. THAT'S GOOD, THE FLANGE IS RIGHT NEXT TO THE EDGE OF THE RADIATOR. CUT THAT OFF!
MAKE A COUPLE OF CUTS, SHOULD BE ABLE TO EITHER RIVET OR WELD THIS THING INTO PLACE. NOW WE CHOSE JUST TO RIVET IT IN PLACE. AFTER MARKING WHERE THE FLANGE WILL END UP ON THE BACK SIDE, WE DRILLED A PILOT HOLE AND THEN FINISHED DRILLING ON THE FAN SHROUD FINGER GUARD. BY RIVETING TOGETHER, IT MAKES THIS PROJECT A LITTLE BIT MORE DIY FRIENDLY CAUSE YOU DON'T NEED TO BREAK OUT A TIG WELDER TO GET THE JOB DONE. A FEW NICELY AND EVENLY SPACED RIVETS KEEP THE PROJECT LOOKING CLEAN.
THEN AFTER ONCE AGAIN PROTECTING THE COOLING FINS, WE DROPPED OUR NEW RADIATOR BACK IN PLACE, AND INSTALLED OUR TOP HALF FAN SHROUD. THEN WE JUST SECURED IT IN PLACE WITH SOME NEW HARDWARE.
ALRIGHT, NOW WITH THE FAN SHROUD INSTALLED, I'M JUST USING A GRAY SCUFF PAD TO GIVE IT A NICE, EVEN TONE. BUT YOU CAN POLISH IT UP AND MAKE IT SHINE LIKE A MIRROR IF YOU REALLY WANTED TO, THE CHOICE IS YOURS. EITHER WAY, OUR BASIC FAN SHROUD IS GOING TO MAKE THE COOLING SYSTEM MORE EFFECTIVE AND HOPEFULLY IT'LL KEEP SOMEBODY FROM STICKING THEIR HANDS DOWN INTO THE SPINNING BLADES. NOW ALL WE'VE GOT LEFT TO DO IS DRAIN ALL THE OLD COOLANT OUT OF THE BLOCK AND FILL EVERYTHING UP WITH A GOOD 50/50 MIX OF ANTIFREEZE AND WATER. BUT THERE IS ONE MORE THING WE WANT TO DO TO THIS TRUCK BEFORE WE LET IT OUT OF THE SHOP. NOW THE OWNER OF THIS TRUCK SAID THEY WERE HAVING A HARD TIME COMING UP WITH A GASKET THAT SEALS THE FUEL FILLER NECK TO THE REST OF THE BODY.
LOCAL PART STORES JUST COULDN'T COME UP WITH ANYTHING. BUT BROTHERS TRUCK PARTS CAME THROUGH FOR US AGAIN WITH A NEW GROMMET. A LITTLE GLASS CLEANER WILL HELP IT SLIDE INTO
PLACE A LITTLE BIT EASIER, WITHOUT LEAVING ANY RESIDUE BEHIND.
JUST LIKE THAT!
NOW THE RAIN WILL STAY OUT.
(RYAN)>> HEY GUYS, WELCOME BACK TO TRUCK TECH. WE'RE DOWN HERE A DBR HIGH PERFORMANCE IN SPRING HILL, TENNESSEE. AND FOR YOU GUYS THAT WATCH THE SHOW REGULARLY, YOU KNOW THEY'VE HELPED US OUT WITH PROJECTS IN THE PAST. BUT THE SHOP MIGHT LOOK A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT TO YOU. THAT'S BECAUSE THEY'VE MOVED INTO A NEW, AWESOME 30,000 SQUARE FOOT FACILITY TO HAVE MORE ROOM FOR ALL THESE COOL CARS AND TRUCKS. THE REASON WE'RE HERE TODAY IS TO CHECK OUT A TEST AND TUNE SESSION ON THEIR DYNO. NOW OUR FRIENDS AT DBR WORK ON HIGH PERFORMANCE STREET CARS, DIESEL TRUCKS, JEEPS, AND RACE CARS. [ phone ringing ]
(OLIVIA)>> DBR, THIS IS OLIVIA.
(RYAN)>> AND THEY SELL THOUSANDS OF AFTERMARKET PARTS. NOW STRAPPED TO THE DYNO TODAY IS A 2013 ECOBOOST F-150. BUT THE NEWS HERE IS THAT SCT AND BULLY DOG ARE NOW ONE COMPANY. AND YOU CAN USE YOUR BULLY DOG DEVICE AND THE PREPROGRAMMED TUNES, OR YOU CAN GO TO AN SCT BULLY DOG DEALER AND THEY CAN CREATE A CUSTOM TUNE FOR YOUR SPECIFIC VEHICLE. SO WE'RE GONNA LOOK OVER THEIR SHOULDER TODAY AND SEE WHAT KIND OF POWER THEY CAN PULL THROUGH THIS TWIN TURBO VSIX.
BY NOW I'M SURE YOU GUYS ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE BULLY DOG GT, OR GAUGE TUNER. YOU CAN GO WITH ONE OF THE PREPROGRAMMED TUNES THAT'S IN IT OR YOU CAN NOW GO AND HAVE A CUSTOM CALIBRATION MADE FOR YOUR SPECIFIC COMBO. NOW THE GUYS FROM BULLY DOG AND SCT HAVE BEEN HERE AT DBR TESTING THINGS OUT AND DIALING IN THIS F-150.
(RICK)>> WE EVEN MADE MORE! 383.7!
(RYAN)>> NOW ONE OF THE DRAW BACKS WITH PREPROGRAMMED TUNES IS THAT YOU CAN UPSET THE BALANCE WHEN YOU ADD PARTS LIKE EXHAUST SYSTEMS, COLD AIR INTAKES, SUPERCHARGERS, OR TURBOS. BUT WITH THIS NEW FOUND FLEXIBILITY, YOU CAN MODIFY YOUR TUNE TO KEEP UP WITH ANY CHANGES IN HARD PARTS.
(DAVID)>> 375, THEY OVERLAY EACH OTHER
ALMOST CONSISTENTLY.
(DARYL)>> SO WE GOT AN ADDITIONAL HORSEPOWER AND WE'RE RUNNING CLEAR UP AT 200 DEGREES. WE'RE STILL MAINTAINING OUR HORSEPOWER.
(RYAN)>> CLEARLY THESE GUYS ARE HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS.
SO WE'RE GONNA TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THE DYNO GRAPH. LOOKS LIKE YOU GUYS GOT SOME PRETTY IMPRESSIVE GAINS WITH THIS THING?
(DAVID)>> YEAH, IF YOU LOOK, THIS GREEN LINE IS THE STOCK. THAT'S THE TORQUE, THIS IS THE HORSEPOWER. IF YOU LOOK AT THE RED LINE, THAT IS THE SCT CUSTOM TUNE. YOU CAN SEE THE STOCK MAKES PEAK TORQUE RIGHT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PULL, WHICH IS OKAY. BUT IF YOU LOOK AT THE SCT CUSTOM TUNE, IT'S
MAKING PEAK TORQUE AT THE 4,500 RPM RANGE. SO THAT'S IN THE USER RANGE. WHEN YOU'RE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE, WHEN YOU PUT IT TO THE FLOOR AND IT DOWN SHIFTS, YOU'RE GONNA BE IN THIS RANGE, NOT THIS RANGE. SO YOU'RE GONNA REALLY FEEL A DIFFERENCE IN THE SEAT OF YOUR PANTS. THE OTHER BIG THING TO NOTICE, IF YOU LOOK AT HORSEPOWER, THERE'S ABOUT AN 80 HORSEPOWER DIFFERENCE HERE, HERE, HERE, AND HERE, ALL THE WAY FROM 4,000 RPM UNTIL THE END OF THE SHIFT IS 80 MORE HORSEPOWER.
(RYAN)>> YEAH THIS IS PROBABLY YOUR BEST NUMBER UP HERE, THE 383, BUT THE OTHER RUNS WERE WITHIN A FEW HORSEPOWER THEN?
(DAVID)>> THEY WERE ALSO WITHIN TWO PERCENT. THEY WERE ALL FOLLOWED EXACTLY THE SAME. SOMETIMES THE BEGINNING CHANGE BASED OFF OF HOW WE PUT IT TO THE FLOOR IN THE DYNO. BUT WHERE IT COUNTS, HORSEPOWER AND TORQUE, THEY WERE ALL EXACTLY THE SAME. VERY, VERY CONSISTENT.
(MATT)>> I LIKE THAT WE WERE ABLE TO SEE THE REPEATABILITY OF IT AFTER THE MULTIPLE RUNS, THAT'S
THE BIG THING THAT I LOOK FORWARD, IN CALIBRATIONS, NOT JUST A ONE HIT WONDER.
(DARYL)>> WITH THE CUSTOM TUNING OPTION NOW, OUR CURRENT CUSTOMERS CAN GO NOW TO AN SCT/BULLY DOG PERFORMANCE SHOP AND THEY CAN GET THEIR UNIT THAT THEY HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED AND THEY CAN GET THAT MODIFIED TO THEIR VEHICLE IF THEY WANT TO MAKE ADDITIONAL ENHANCEMENTS TO THEIR VEHICLE EASILY.
THEY CAN DO AN UNLOCK AND THEN THEY PROVIDE THEIR CUSTOM TUNE. AND VIOLA, IT'S DONE, THEY DO NOT HAVE TO GO BUY ANOTHER DEVICE.
(RICK)>> WHETHER IT'S A COLD AIR INTAKE, A SUPERCHARGER, YOU HAVE TO HAVE CUSTOM TUNING TO DO IT. AND I THINK WHAT WE SHOWED OVER THE LAST TWO DAYS IS, WHEN THE CUSTOMER LEAVES WITH THIS TRUCK AND DRIVES
OFF, WHETHER THEY START IT UP TODAY, TOMORROW,
OR SIX MONTHS FROM NOW.
IT'S GONNA HOLD THE TUNE THAT WAS PUT IN IT AND GIVE THEM WHAT THEY REALLY WANTED, WHICH WAS THAT EXTRA BURST OF POWER. [ tires squealing ]
(RYAN)>> HEY GUYS, WELCOME BACK TO TRUCK TECH. WELL WE'RE TAKING A LITTLE TEST DRIVE AND MAKING OUR WAY BACK TO THE SHOP IN THIS F-150 THAT THE GUYS FROM SCT AND BULLY DOG JUST GOT DONE TUNING. NOW THIS IS JUST A STOCK ENGINE, THE EXHAUST IS
STOCK, THE INTAKE IS STOCK, BUT IT ADDED 70 OR 80 HORSEPOWER. BUT IF YOU'VE GOT A COMBINATION WITH MODIFIED EXHAUST AND INTAKE, AND ANY OTHER PARTS, YOU CAN COMPENSATE FOR THAT WITH A CUSTOM TUNE AND REALLY SEE SOME RESULTS. NOW A LOT OF TIMES WITH TUNERS YOU ONLY SEE GAINS ON THE UPPER RPM RANGE. WITH THIS THING, IT'S ACROSS THE BOARD AND YOU CAN REALLY FEEL IT BOTH ON THE BACK ROADS AND OUT ON THE HIGHWAY. AND TUNING ISN'T JUST FOR GOING FAST. FOR YOU GUYS THAT TOW, YOU KNOW THAT POWER AND TORQUE DOWN LOW IN THE RPM RANGE CAN REALLY HELP, ESPECIALLY WHEN PULLING A TRAILER. NOW THAT EXTRA 75 HORSEPOWER REALLY WOKE THIS TRUCK UP AND MADE IT FUN TO DRIVE. AND EXTRA HORSEPOWER AND TORQUE MEANS QUICKER ACCELERATION. BUT IF YOU'VE GOT SOMETHING LOOSE IN THE BED OF THE TRUCK, THERE'S JUST GONNA BE SLIDING AROUND THAT MUCH MORE. NOW THE OWNER OF THIS TRUCK STARTED TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM WITH A RUBBER MAT OUT OF A DIFFERENT BED LENGTH TRUCK. BUT IT STILL LEAVES THE TAIL GATE AND THE SIDES OF THE BED VULNERABLE TO DAMAGE. AND IT'S NOT THE AESTHETICALLY PLEASING SOLUTION.
WE CAN DO BETTER. SO TODAY WE'RE GONNA BE INSTALLING THIS DUALLINER BED LINER SYSTEM THAT COMBINES CUSTOM FIT HARD PLASTIC SIDES WITH A ZERO SKID RUBBER FLOOR. SO THE CARGO STAYS WHERE YOU PUT IT. INSTALLATION IS A PIECE OF CAKE.
INSTALLATION STARTS WITH THE REMOVAL OF FOUR CARGO TIE DOWN LOOPS. THEN WE CAN INSTALL THE HARD PLASTIC FRONT PANEL.
FOLLOWED BY THE TWO SIDE PANELS.
A COUPLE OF PLASTIC CLIPS PROVIDED WITH THE BED LINER SECURE THE FRONT PANEL TO THE SIDE PANELS. IN THE BACK THE SIDE PANELS FIT UNDERNEATH THE FACTORY INSTALLED BED RAIL CAPS AND LOCKS THEM INTO POSITION. THEN JUST SIMPLY REATTACH THE CARGO TIE DOWNS.
THEN THE RUBBER MAT GETS TUCKED INTO A CHANNEL THAT'S AT THE BASE OF BOTH BED SIDES AND THE HEADER PANEL.
ALL THAT'S LEFT IS THE PROTECTIVE PANEL FOR THE TAILGATE, WHICH IS HELD IN PLACE BY REUSING THE FACTORY TAILGATE HARDWARE. NOW THIS NEXT STEP IS OPTIONAL IF DRILLING
THROUGH FRESH PAINT ISN'T YOUR THING. BUT IT SECURES THE BOTTOM OF THE TAILGATE PANEL TO THE TAILGATE. AND DON'T WORRY ABOUT RUST, THEY PROVIDE A CORROSION INHIBITOR THAT GOES ON THE CHRISTMAS TREE PUSH PIN BEFORE IT GETS INSTALLED. ALRIGHT, WITH THE INSTALLATION COMPLETE, WE CAN SHOW YOU THAT THIS STEEL WHEEL, WHICH WOULD SLIDE ALL OVER THE PLACE ON A PLASTIC DROP IN LINER OR A BARE STEEL FLOOR. NOW IT STAYS RIGHT WHERE YOU PUT IT. GUYS, THANKS FOR WATCHING TRUCK TECH, SEE YOU NEXT TIME.
