(JOHN)>> SOLVING AN ENGINE MISFIRE CAN ACTUALLY MAKE
FOR SOME PRETTY SERIOUS DETECTIVE WORK SOMETIMES. NOW I KNOW A LOT OF GUYS THAT WILL ABSOLUTELY GO AHEAD AND REPLACE EVERYTHING, ALL THE WAY FROM THE CAP AND ROTOR DOWN TO THE PLUGS. THE PROBLEM WITH THAT IS THEY DON'T ACTUALLY KNOW WHERE IT WAS COMING FROM. SO TODAY WE'RE GONNA GO OVER SOME DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS AS WELL AS A CHEAP AND INEXPENSIVE TRICKS TO GO AHEAD AND PIN POINT THOSE ISSUES, FIX THEM, GET YOU BACK OUT ON THE ROAD SAFELY. AND WHILE THIS ZZ FOUR SOUNDS STRONG, IT'S ONLY RUNNING ON SEVEN CYLINDERS. WE DISABLED ONE TO SHOW YOU HOW TO FIND IT. USE A TEMP GUN, WHICH YOU CAN GET AT ANY PARTS STORE, AND CHECK EACH EXHAUST HEADER TUBE. NOW IF YOU HAVE A CYLINDER THAT READS MUCH LOWER THAN
THE OTHERS, CONGRATULATIONS.
NOW YOU KNOW WHICH CYLINDER'S THE CULPRIT. IF YOU DON'T HAVE A TEMP GUN, WELL HERE'S AN OLD HOT RODDER'S TRICK. SIMPLY MODIFY A WATER BOTTLE, IT'LL WORK EVERY TIME. COULD IT BE A PLUG, WIRE, OR COIL PACK? TO FIND OUT TRY SWAPPING THE DEAD CYLINDER PLUG WITH ONE OF THE OTHERS. IF THE MISS MOVES TO THE OTHER CYLINDER, IT WAS INDEED A BAD PLUG. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE, DO THE SAME SWAP WITH THE PLUG WIRES, OR IN SOME CASES COIL PACKS. OBVIOUSLY WE'VE GOT A BAD WIRE. SO AFTER A QUICK, CHEAP SWAP, PROBLEM SOLVED. OKAY WE SHOWED YOU HOW TO DIAGNOSE A CYLINDER MISFIRE WITH NOTHING MORE THAN A USED WATER BOTTLE AND A LITTLE BIT OF TIME. NOW IF YOU'VE GOT A DEAD CYLINDER PAST THAT, WE'RE GONNA NEED TO GO AHEAD AND LOOK INSIDE THE MOTOR.
NOW THERE'S A COUPLE OF TOOLS THAT ARE ENGINE SPECIFIC TO GO AHEAD AND HELP ME DIAGNOSE THOSE PROBLEMS WITHOUT STARTING TO SNATCH PARTS. CHECK COMPRESSION FIRST, IT'S THE EASIEST WAY TO CHECK FOR RING ISSUES, AND/OR HEAD GASKETS WITH THE ENGINE STILL IN THE CAR. WE'RE USING THIS MATCO DIGITAL COMPRESSION TESTER. NOW IT HAS THE ABILITY TO STORE RESULTS FOR UP TO 12 CYLINDERS AND DISPLAY INDIVIDUAL CYLINDER READINGS, PEAK READINGS, AND THE AVERAGE READINGS
ACROSS THE CYLINDER BANK. WITH THE IGNITION DISABLED AND THE THROTTLE BLADES OPEN, HAVE A BUDDY TURN THE MOTOR OVER ENOUGH TIMES TO HAVE THE COMPRESSION STROKE HIT AT LEAST FIVE TIMES OR UNTIL THE COMPRESSION TESTER STOPS RISING AND LEVELS OFF, PERFECT FOR THIS ENGINE. MAKE SURE YOU CHECK ALL THE CYLINDERS. THEN JUST SIMPLY COMPARED THE NUMBER. WE'RE LOOKING FOR GOOD, CONSISTENT AVERAGE, MAKING SURE THAT NO ONE CYLINDER IS MORE THAN 10 PERCENT AWAY FROM ANY OTHER CYLINDER. ALRIGHT NOW WHAT IF YOU'VE GOT ONE THAT'S STILL BAD? WELL THE EASIEST WAY TO VERIFY RINGS IS TO GO AHEAD A LITTLE BIT OF 30 WEIGHT MOTOR OIL AND TRY AGAIN. NOW IF YOU STILL HAVE A LEAK, WE'RE GONNA HAVE TO GO AHEAD AND LOOK FOR A BURNT OR BENT VALVE. WE DO THAT WITH A LEAK DOWN TEST. WITH THE CYLINDER AT TDC, WE'LL USE THIS TOOL FROM MATCO WHICH REGULATES AIR PRESSURE AT 90 POUNDS IN THE CYLINDER WITH THE VALVES CLOSED. BUT WE KNOW THESE VALVES ARE GOOD, BUT IF YOU HAD A BAD INTAKE VALVE, WELL I CAN ACTUALLY MIMIC THAT, SHOW YOU WHAT TO LOOK FOR BY SIMPLY OPENING THIS VALVE UP. IF YOU'VE GOT AIR COMING OUT OF THE CARBURETOR, YOU KNOW YOU'VE GOT AN INTAKE VALVE PROBLEM. NOW THE EXHAUST SIDE. WITH THE EXHAUST VALVE CRACKED OPEN YOU CAN SEE THE AIR COMING OUT OF THE EXHAUST. IT'S PRETTY COOL EH? WELL IF THE COMPRESSED AIR WAS ACTUALLY CAUSING BUBBLES IN THE RADIATOR OR WE HAD SOME MILKY LOOKING OIL,
CHANCES ARE WE'VE GOT A BLOWN HEAD GASKET. SO THESE ARE SOME STEPS FOR YOU TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEMS YOURSELF WITH SOME CHEAP TRICKS AND SOME SPECIALTY TOOLS.
AND WITH A LITTLE BIT OF TIME YOU WON'T WASTE A WHOLE BUNCH OF HARD EARNED MONEY ON PARTS YOU NEVER ACTUALLY NEEDED.
(JOE)>> IT DOESN'T TAKE AN EXPERT ENGINE BUILDER TO UNDERSTAND WHY YOU GET MORE STRENGTH AND DURABILITY FROM FOUR BOLT MAINS ON YOUR HIGH PERFORMANCE ENGINE BLOCK COMPARED TO TWO BOLT MAINS. RECENTLY WE SHOWED YOU HOW TO CONVERT A TWO BOLT MAIN BLOCK TO FOUR BOLT BY FIRST HAVING A MACHINIST DRILL EXTRA BOLT HOLES. THEN ADDING A NEW SET OF MILODON BILLET SPLAYED CAPS. THAT WAS FOLLOWED BY LINE BORING TO GET THE CAPS BORED CLOSE BEFORE A FINAL LINE HONE.
(JOHN)>> NOW ALL OF THAT CAN COST OVER $400 DOLLARS DEPENDING ON YOUR APPLICATION AND THE AVAILABILITY OF PARTS. SO HERE'S A CHEAPER, MORE COST EFFECTIVE WAY TO ADD STRENGTH TO YOUR BLOCK BY CONVERTING THESE FACTORY STYLE BOLTS TO AN ARP STUD. SINCE THE BOLT INSTALLS DIFFERENTLY, IT'S GONNA GIVE A DIFFERENT GAUGE READING. BUT WHY ARE STUDS BETTER THAN BOLTS IN YOUR MAIN CAPS? WELL CONSIDER THIS, A BOLT HAS TWO FORCES OF FRICTION WHEN IT'S TORQED DOWN. FIRST THE THREADS STRETCH FOR A CLAMPING FORCE, AND THAT'S GOOD BUT IN ADDITION IT ALSO TWISTED AS YOU TORQUE IT. A STUD IS ONLY INSTALLED FINGER TIGHT. WHEN THE NUT DRAWS DOWN ON IT IT ONLY PULLS ON ITS LINEAR AXIS. THIS MAKES FOR BETTER TORQUING AND A MUCH STRONGER FASTENER.
(JOE)>> NOW REINSTALL THE CAPS, THEN THE WASHERS AND NUTS, AND DON'T BE STINGY WITH THAT ULTRA LUBE. NEXT YOU CAN TORQUE THEM DOWN TO SPECS.

OFTEN GET OVER LOOKED, BUT CAN ACTUALLY MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN THE LONG RUN. NOW WITH THAT IN MIND, TODAY WE'RE GONNA SHOW YOU SOME QUICK TECH TIPS THAT WE'VE LEARNED OVER THE YEARS THAT CAN HELP MAKE YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE IN THE SHOP OR GARAGE
A LITTLE BIT EASIER. FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOU'RE A RACER OR A GEAR HEAD AND YOU HAVE SEVERAL CAM SHAFTS LAYING AROUND THAT YOU USE
ON REGULAR BASIS, HERE'S A SUPER CHEAP AND SUPER SAFE WAY TO STORE THEM. FIRST SPRAY THE CAM SHAFT DOWN WITH WD 40. POSITION IT INSIDE A PIECE OF LEFT OVER OR NEW ROLL BAR PADDING, AND USE ZIP TIES AROUND THE PADDING TO SECURE THE CAM SHAFT. AND IT'S LUBED TO PREVENT RUST. NOW YOU WON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH OIL SOAKED CARDBOARD BOXES. AND IF YOU DROP THE CAM SHAFT, YOU'RE NOT GONNA
DAMAGE A LOBE OR A JOURNAL.
(JOE)>> HERE'S A LITTLE PROBLEM WE ALL FACE FROM TIME TO TIME, A STUD OR BOLT THAT NEEDS TO BE SECURED BUT THERE AREN'T ENOUGH THREADS HERE FOR A LOCK WASHER OR A NYLON NUT TO TAKE HOLE THERE.
SO WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO? WELL HERE'S A QUICK FIX THAT MIGHT BE RIGHT IN YOUR OWN TACKLE BOX. IT'S JUST STANDARD NYLON FISHING LINE. I THINK THIS IS 15 POUND TEST. I'M GONNA TAKE A PIECE, RUN IT THROUGH A REGULAR NUT LIKE SO, MAKE A LOOP, TAKE THE NUT, THREAD IT ONTO THAT STUD OR BOLT. NEXT TIGHTEN IT DOWN REAL GOOD, CUT AWAY THE EXCESS, AND YOU HAVE JUST MADE YOUR OWN NYLON NUT AND THAT BOLT'S NOT GOING ANYWHERE.
(MIKE)>> IF YOU'VE GOT A VEHICLE WITH A MECHANICAL
FUEL PUMP AND YOU DO YOUR OWN JET CHANGES IN YOUR CARBURETOR, HERE'S AN EASY WAY TO GUARANTEE FAST FIRE UPS AND AVOID ALL THAT EXCESSIVE ENGINE CRANKING. USING THE FUEL I DRAINED OUT OF THE BOWLS INTO OUR DRAIN CUP, I'M SUCKING IT UP WITH, WELL US PARENTS CALL THIS A SNOT SUCKER. WITH IT FULL WE'LL SQUIRT IT DOWN INTO THE OVERFLOW VENT, AND THIS IS ACTUALLY FILLING THE BOWL BACK UP. WHEN THE FUEL REGISTERS IN THE SITE WINDOW, GO AHEAD AND REPEAT THE SAME THING FOR THE OPPOSITE BOWL. NOW YOU'VE GOT A PRIMED CARBURETOR, HIT THE KEY, AND ENJOY AN IMMEDIATE FIRE UP.

ABOUT IGNITION SYSTEMS. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE, AND WHICH ONE MIGHT BE
RIGHT FOR YOUR PROJECT?
SO TODAY WE'RE GONNA GO OVER THE TWO MOST COMMON TYPES AND AN EASY AND AFFORDABLE WAY TO UPGRADE YOURS FOR MORE HORSEPOWER. BUT NOW FIRST WE'VE GOT TO GO OVER WHAT THEY ARE AND HOW THEY WORK. THIS DISTRIBUTOR IS CALLED A HIGH ENERGY IGNITION, OR WHAT MORE GUYS CALL AN HEI. NOW IT IS AN INDUCTIVE DISCHARGE SYSTEM. AND IT'S ACTUALLY A STAND ALONE UNIT. IT TAKES ONE POWER SUPPLY AND HOUSES ITS OWN COIL. NOW THEY WERE USED IN MILLIONS OF STOCK TYPE VEHICLES BECAUSE THEY CREATED PLENTY OF SPARK AT LOWER RPM. NOW THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH AN INDUCTIVE DISCHARGE IGNITION SYSTEM IS THAT THE COIL CAN'T KEEP UP AT AROUND 5,500 RPM OR SO. IT CAN'T FIRE AND RECHARGE IN TIME RESULTING IN A LOSS OF HORSEPOWER AT THE TOP END. THE OTHER TYPE IS WHAT'S KNOWN AS THE CAPACITIVE DISCHARGE IGNITION SYSTEM, OR WHAT MOST PEOPLE CALL A CDI. NOW THE BEST PART ABOUT ONE OF THESE IS IT CAN CREATE A
FULL SPARK THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE RPM RANGE. SO YOU'LL NEVER LOSE POWER AT THE TOP END, BUT IT WILL REQUIRE SOME TYPE OF IGNITION BOX, WHICH ACTUALLY HOLDS A SMALL CHARGE FOR THE COIL TO DRAW FROM BEFORE IT MAKES ITS OWN POWER FOR THE SPARK PLUGS. AND THAT'S BECAUSE IT DRAWS POWER DIRECTLY FROM THE BATTERY. NOW SUMMIT RACING OFFERS A MULTIPLE SPARK CDI BOX
THAT ALLOWS YOU TO UPGRADE ANY TYPE OF INDUCTIVE
IGNITION SYSTEM TO A CDI. IT COST LESS THAN $150 BUCKS AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO BUY A NEW DISTRIBUTOR.
THE FIRST STEP IN UPGRADING AN HEI IS TO REMOVE THE CAP AND ROTOR BUTTON.
THEN WE CAN LOCATE THE IGNITION MODULE, REMOVE THE CONDENSER AND MODULE, AND DISCONNECT THE WIRES.
WE CAN USE OUR INSTRUCTION SHEET TO HELP US DIAL IN
EXACTLY WHICH MODULE WE HAVE. ONCE WE CONFIRM WE'VE GOT A FOUR PIN, IT'LL TELL US EXACTLY WHICH DIAGRAM WE NEED TO USE. THE BOX COMES WITH WHAT I CALL A BAG OF GOODIES. IT ACTUALLY INCLUDES ALL THE WIRES, CLAMPS, AND EVEN TOOLS YOU MIGHT NEED TO DO THIS JOB. NOW YOU MIGHT HAVE SOME STUFF LEFT OVER, AND DON'T WORRY, THAT'S OKAY. REMEMBER, WE SAID THIS THING WILL UPGRADE ANYTHING FROM A TFI FORD TO A CHRYSLER. HEY YOU COULD EVEN USE THIS ON A POINTS STYLE DISTRIBUTOR AND HIDE THE BOX FOR THAT FACTORY LOOK WITH THAT NEW STYLE PERFORMANCE. NOW ONE THING I LIKE TO DO IS GO AHEAD AND REMOVE THE TERMINALS FROM THE PLASTIC CLIP, SLIDE ON SOME HEAT SHRINK. THEN USE A LITTLE BIT OF LOCTITE DIELECTRIC GREASE TO PREVENT FORMING CORROSION.
ONCE THEY'RE SNAPPED IN PLACE, A LITTLE BIT OF HEAT WILL SEAL THEM UP FOREVER. THESE PROVIDED CLAMPS WILL KEEP THE WIRES FROM GETTING RIPPED APART BY THE ROTOR BUTTON, AND THEY JUST GO RIGHT BACK INTO PLACE WHERE THE OLD MODULE WAS. AND NOW YOU CAN PUT THE REST BACK TOGETHER. NOW THE WAY YOU WIRE ONE OF THESE SYSTEMS UP IS JUST AS EASY AS A CONVERSION.
HEAVY RED AND BLACK GOES STRAIGHT TO THE BATTERY. NOW THE LITTLE RED WIRE IS LABELED 12 VOLT SWITCH. IT GOES RIGHT TO WHAT USED TO RUN YOUR HEI IGNITION.
THE GRAY WIRE'S FOR A TACH OUTPUT, ORANGE AND BLACK ARE FOR YOUR COIL POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE, AND OBVIOUSLY THE GREEN AND PURPLE GO TO WHAT WE JUST INSTALLED IN THE DISTRIBUTOR. NOW IF YOU'VE BEEN NOTICING A LITTLE BIT OF SPARK BREAK UP AT THE HIGHER RPM LEVEL, WELL IT MIGHT BE TIME TO GO AHEAD AND ADD SOME SPARK ENERGY.
TRUST ME, BY CONVERTING TO ONE OF THESE CDI IGNITION BOXES, YOU WILL FEEL A DIFFERENCE.

NOW THERE'S A COUPLE OF TOOLS THAT ARE ENGINE SPECIFIC TO GO AHEAD AND HELP ME DIAGNOSE THOSE PROBLEMS WITHOUT STARTING TO SNATCH PARTS. CHECK COMPRESSION FIRST, IT'S THE EASIEST WAY TO CHECK FOR RING ISSUES, AND/OR HEAD GASKETS WITH THE ENGINE STILL IN THE CAR. WE'RE USING THIS MATCO DIGITAL COMPRESSION TESTER. NOW IT HAS THE ABILITY TO STORE RESULTS FOR UP TO 12 CYLINDERS AND DISPLAY INDIVIDUAL CYLINDER READINGS, PEAK READINGS, AND THE AVERAGE READINGS
ACROSS THE CYLINDER BANK. WITH THE IGNITION DISABLED AND THE THROTTLE BLADES OPEN, HAVE A BUDDY TURN THE MOTOR OVER ENOUGH TIMES TO HAVE THE COMPRESSION STROKE HIT AT LEAST FIVE TIMES OR UNTIL THE COMPRESSION TESTER STOPS RISING AND LEVELS OFF, PERFECT FOR THIS ENGINE. MAKE SURE YOU CHECK ALL THE CYLINDERS. THEN JUST SIMPLY COMPARED THE NUMBER. WE'RE LOOKING FOR GOOD, CONSISTENT AVERAGE, MAKING SURE THAT NO ONE CYLINDER IS MORE THAN 10 PERCENT AWAY FROM ANY OTHER CYLINDER. ALRIGHT NOW WHAT IF YOU'VE GOT ONE THAT'S STILL BAD? WELL THE EASIEST WAY TO VERIFY RINGS IS TO GO AHEAD A LITTLE BIT OF 30 WEIGHT MOTOR OIL AND TRY AGAIN. NOW IF YOU STILL HAVE A LEAK, WE'RE GONNA HAVE TO GO AHEAD AND LOOK FOR A BURNT OR BENT VALVE. WE DO THAT WITH A LEAK DOWN TEST. WITH THE CYLINDER AT TDC, WE'LL USE THIS TOOL FROM MATCO WHICH REGULATES AIR PRESSURE AT 90 POUNDS IN THE CYLINDER WITH THE VALVES CLOSED. BUT WE KNOW THESE VALVES ARE GOOD, BUT IF YOU HAD A BAD INTAKE VALVE, WELL I CAN ACTUALLY MIMIC THAT, SHOW YOU WHAT TO LOOK FOR BY SIMPLY OPENING THIS VALVE UP. IF YOU'VE GOT AIR COMING OUT OF THE CARBURETOR, YOU KNOW YOU'VE GOT AN INTAKE VALVE PROBLEM. NOW THE EXHAUST SIDE. WITH THE EXHAUST VALVE CRACKED OPEN YOU CAN SEE THE AIR COMING OUT OF THE EXHAUST. IT'S PRETTY COOL EH? WELL IF THE COMPRESSED AIR WAS ACTUALLY CAUSING BUBBLES IN THE RADIATOR OR WE HAD SOME MILKY LOOKING OIL,
CHANCES ARE WE'VE GOT A BLOWN HEAD GASKET. SO THESE ARE SOME STEPS FOR YOU TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEMS YOURSELF WITH SOME CHEAP TRICKS AND SOME SPECIALTY TOOLS.
AND WITH A LITTLE BIT OF TIME YOU WON'T WASTE A WHOLE BUNCH OF HARD EARNED MONEY ON PARTS YOU NEVER ACTUALLY NEEDED.

NOW YOU WON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH OIL SOAKED CARDBOARD BOXES. AND IF YOU DROP THE CAM SHAFT, YOU'RE NOT GONNA
DAMAGE A LOBE OR A JOURNAL.

THIS DISTRIBUTOR IS CALLED A HIGH ENERGY IGNITION, OR WHAT MORE GUYS CALL AN HEI. NOW IT IS AN INDUCTIVE DISCHARGE SYSTEM. AND IT'S ACTUALLY A STAND ALONE UNIT. NOW ONE THING I LIKE TO DO IS GO AHEAD AND REMOVE THE TERMINALS FROM THE PLASTIC CLIP, SLIDE ON SOME HEAT SHRINK. THEN USE A LITTLE BIT OF LOCTITE DIELECTRIC GREASE TO PREVENT FORMING CORROSION.
ONCE THEY'RE SNAPPED IN PLACE, A LITTLE BIT OF HEAT WILL SEAL THEM UP FOREVER. THESE PROVIDED CLAMPS WILL KEEP THE WIRES FROM GETTING RIPPED APART BY THE ROTOR BUTTON, AND THEY JUST GO RIGHT BACK INTO PLACE WHERE THE OLD MODULE WAS. AND NOW YOU CAN PUT THE REST BACK TOGETHER. NOW THE WAY YOU WIRE ONE OF THESE SYSTEMS UP IS JUST AS EASY AS A CONVERSION.
