Yeah,

it's a third generation 82 Camaro Berlinetta, not the favorite hot ride in Chevy history.

So why is this one headed to our shop for a special makeover?

And why are seven recent W

tech grads headed here from all over the country to volunteer their skills.

It's just horsepower's way of rescuing a prized but wounded street machine for a worthy American soldier.

His name is Kyle Jordan

A US Army E two stationed at Fort Campbell Kentucky. Soon to be deployed to Afghanistan.

It's his only transportation and he knows when I did give it to him,

I gave it to him on stipulation. He took care of it as best he could.

Well, it's a little beyond his means to take care of because of his military duties.

It was Kyle's stepfather, James, also an army veteran and his story that just started this project.

I pretty much lay everything out for the Children all evenly

but uh

he will be overwhelmed by the fact that I went out of my way

to accomplish something for him that I probably haven't done for my own Children that are blood. I'm proud to be a part of his life and,

and he's proud to be a part of his country. I couldn't ask no more from him

before the Wyotech Grads arrive. We gotta see just what we're up against.

Maybe that's why he carried a portable fire extinguisher

and even this stuff in case it's still running after the fire.

We had photos of the car but the only way to find out what our mission is is to tear it apart

soon, we had a parts upgrade list that was filling up fast.

It didn't take long to determine the trainees got to come out for a rebuild

and that tired old 305 got to come out too.

These well trained gear heads have converged here, ready to volunteer, roll up their sleeves and show off their skills for a good cause.

They came for four of Wild

Tech's six campuses, Long Beach Sacramento, Laramie and Blairsville.

Now we've worked with wild

tech grads on numerous other projects before like our recent scholastic engine builder challenges,

tough competition that truly put their knowledge and skills to the test.

Then there was the Xtreme 4x4 rock crawler

and even the complete build up of a G two motor sports hot rod bike complete with 126 cube engine,

cool paint job

and a finish machine capable of 12th quarter miles bottom line. We were impressed with what they could do

and that's why we tapped into their talents for a special mission.

These guys done a really good job and, and really made himself shine without actually trying.

Most of these guys have new jobs to get back to. So to make the best use of their time here, we're dividing them up into teams.

Of course, none of this would be possible without another important team player. Summit racing,

it's gonna take a lot of new parts and they supplied everything we need to make it happen.

Summit racing has a high regard for the military and for those folks that

just do their job but do it really well and do it in the service of the country

and we're gearheads. We're enthusiasts too. We got a really big kick out of seeing the Wyotech team come together and be excited about working on the project.

I mean, I I got a kick out of seeing those kids solve problems,

the stuff that comes up whenever you

open up a car to do restoration.

Summit sent the GM 350 that Jacob and Shane will build up from a short block,

the rebuild kit that Colt Nicholas will use on that well worn 700

r-gene rough

and we can get it though

and the components, Gustavo and Chris will use to upgrade the rear end suspension and brakes.

Jake and Shane got the lucky job handling new parts for the engine building like the hydraulic roller from comp cams, all with Joel's expert and entertaining supervision.

So I was leaving. Right. And my wife says, don't forget the Camra adds a couple of 100 pounds. I was like, thanks babe.

Right. Look at that.

Meanwhile, for Cote Nicholas, it's the dirty tedious unglamorous gig of dismantling and rebuilding the trans with Eric as their mentor.

Just normal, we turn and automatic transmission, we just get it done

across the hall. Chris and Gustavo going alone

charged with spending their four work days under the car

off with the old.

So the 82 Camaro redo is well underway

and Kyle's car seems to be in good capable hands.

12 to be exact.

That's a once in a lifetime thing,

especially for a kid his age

and just starting in the military.

This will be a life changing man, I'm sure.

And we'll be right back.

We take a lot of pride in making sure that the professionalism is there. Can you get it? Can you understand it in a reasonable amount of time?

So we take a lot of pride in that.

You always wonder, am I gonna have uh the group of guys that are as good as the last one or

am I gonna set too high of an expectation on? It? Seems like most of the guys we get in can, can live up to that aspect. They're here for that common goal so they can, they can get the job done.

They came to our tech center to tackle a four day mission

divided into three teams are six guest gear heads have wasted no time

putting their skills and the summit racing parts to good use

for us. It's kind of strange to be watching instead of working.

But these recent Wyotech grads are here to prove their stuff with a little coaching from a couple of instructors.

Jake and Shane Drew the lucky straw. They get to build up the 350 short block.

They've already degrade the cam and are well on their way to finishing up the Mylod

oiling system.

314, 320

you're giving on the horsepower, but I'm giving it on the torque. I'm thinking 353 160 ft pack, you might be right on the torque. I'm giving it some horsepower though.

Meanwhile, Colton Nicholas got down and dirty, cleaning the old 700 hour training components,

more cleaning

it never ends.

Followed by the tedious chore of removing and inspecting each and every part for the rebuild.

Oh,

yeah, it's not my exactly favorite thing to do. You know, it's always fun building engines and

I guess that sound good. I mean, but without this,

what do you have,

uh, motor is not gonna go anywhere without a train. So, I mean, somebody's got to do it and

I'm just happy to be here every little passage, every little valve counts. So gotta make sure they're all floating just right. They gotta be in the right location with the right spring pressure.

Else they're not gonna work correctly.

Ok? There's the old struck

across the hall. Chris and Gustavo had no complaints about their mission of duty underneath the Camaro.

That's my passion. I love working on cars, brings joy to me and I, I don't find it work. I, this is like playing for me.

You need suspension on a car just like you need an engine and it, it's just like your body,

your body is there, right? But you gotta have a heart in your brain for it to function.

At least I can say that

she'll handle like a dream.

It's starting to look spanking.

Jake and Shane are ready to install the summit aluminum racing heads staying well ahead of pace in their build up, prompting some premature first day predictions.

I think we'll have it on the uh dyno

by evening. What do you think?

I bet money on it?

Meanwhile, over on the tranny side, except for the case, it's gonna be a completely brand new transmission.

You see the tranny team wasn't satisfied with a simple repiel. They decided to step it up and order some beefier TCI components like this hard and steel gear set.

It will take a lot more abuse and handle more horsepower.

I love transmissions, man. How can you, how can you not work on a transmission man? This is so much fun

about as much fun as washing off nearly 30 years of grease and grime

before the chassis team applies new parts to the old car. They also go the extra mile cleaning up and painting the Camaro's undercarriage safe to say these wo

tech guys hit the ground running, put in a solid first aid work.

We're all working together, building something for Kyle. And uh

I'm just happy to be here

as us combat troops pulled out of Iraq cities this week in Afghanistan. The fighting is now intensifying now. He's gonna be in Afghanistan in a bad spot.

So this will be like,

you know, an early Christmas, early new year birthday present all wrapped up in one.

That's, that's pretty special.

There's no hiding the fact that Kyle Jordan is headed for an uncertain tour of duty.

But thanks to a gift from these guys and summit racing, he will have a cool car to come back to

while waiting on push rocks. Jake and Shane lend a hand across the hall getting the stock rear end out for a rebuild.

Hey, there it is.

I ain't never seen what's going on.

All right, ready

stuff on in there after serious attention to detail and gobs of grunt work. Colt and Nicholas have just buttoned up the tr

meanwhile, Jake and Shane are back to their engine work now, installing Hawaiian Street warrior intake manifold

and the rest of the comp valve train.

Give me a prediction. Big guy.

I said 340 for horsepower 340.

I think they're gonna be a little surprised

next door in the truck shop. Kevin is preparing a little surprise artwork for the three fif valve covers.

Wich

wire sounds good to me.

Sounds good to me too.

They're using a mallory 85 series. He I for spark and 87 octane fuel to feed a Holly 670 Street Avenger.

Hm.

It's a quality age. 87. Ok. It's very nice. Very good for horsepower.

All right, everything looks good. They're playing with the timing. So air fuel ratios are going up and down a little bit, but they've got to be really happy with how fast this thing fired up.

Now we got to do is get it stabilized and we'll be ready to make a hole

after several timing adjustments, this little small block was making 383 horsepower, 435 ft pounds of torque.

Well,

you guys happy with it.

I'm happy. Me too. Me too. That's, that's very impressive.

They need to be

across the hall with the rear end.

Not a problem. Well, proud of them. That's for sure. They worked their butts off. So,

on to the next task

over here, Chris and Gustavo have the I box suspension pieces in place. Hotchkiss,

front and rear sway bars are in

and the E BC brake rotors and pads are installed.

The rear red housing is getting a new strange engineering cone type differential with limited slip

and we're going up from a 307 gear up to uh 373

going to a POSA unit instead of that little one tire fryer, he's got going on in there.

It's gonna be a complete night and day difference. It's gonna wake this car right up.

All new drum brakes on the rear, um, definitely needed it.

Old brakes were shot.

Bossier

sent these 26 flying axles and a company called Zingo

made this custom gift cover that was hand sculpted in clay

before its eventual casting in aluminum.

Next, a new set of American racing wheels mounted on BFGT four Tas

looks great, but there's one final half.

Ok.

It'll rock Subra

connectors to sten up the newly refurbished chassis.

It's now late in the fourth and final day of the project and it's gonna take the entire Wyotech team to finish up the engine installation and interior before time runs out

there. It is. It is. We're in

while the guys complete all the wiring plumbing and such. We also ordered a new windshield to replace the old cracked original.

And since you're from the west coast, maybe you can answer this question for me. If you got a Chevy low rider, why you put 24 inch rims on it, man. It's not a low rider no more.

I don't know. That's a good question

with the hooker headers in place.

Bingo

and the dyno Max exhaust system installed.

It was time for fluids

for the engine, the end was finally in sight.

Meanwhile, the inside team went into overdrive, installing everything from carpet to door panels, from newly covered seats to a trick

Covan gauge cluster.

These guys completely made over Kyle's interior in near record time.

It's time to make some pie.

A

it was a 16 hour final work day, but it will all be worth it in the morning when the unsuspecting owner comes to see it.

Get out then.

Yeah,

buddy.

He doesn't have a clue and he won't have a clue until he walks in here

and that will be the ice is going to take for me.

Family members are here.

Kyle Jordan and his stepfather James are due here at any moment.

Kyle thinks he's arriving at some unknown place to see an old parts car for sale.

He's gonna freak out.

He doesn't know he's about to see the results of four days of spirited labor from six recent grads from Wyotech from around the country and their proud instructors.

He deserves it so much.

Kyle's near basket case. Daily driver was treated to the works

350 Chevy engine that made over 380 horsepower on the

dyno,

a

complete transmission rebuild

suspension and brakes,

posi

rear end upgrade, interior restoration, exterior cool wheels and tires, even an appropriate piece of automotive art.

Check out the car,

man. It looks great.

Hey, man, you do a heck of a job for us in this country and I appreciate what you do every day. So we want to be able to do something for you. Thank you very much.

You deserve it.

You deserve it. Now, check it out.

She gonna be a handful for you.

Yeah,

he likes it.

You're gonna have to drive it really easy,

James uh

kind of set this up for you.

You can thank James for all this. How did you do this?

Uh Well, you know, planning and uh just like the military.

What kind of horsepower is it pushing

383 more?

That's more than enough for him.

A

lot

of

crap.

How

was that?

No denying Kyle was shocked and near speechless, overcome with gratitude for the generosity of the team that made it happen,

ma'am. I hear you supplied all the parts.

Yes,

we

did. Thank you very much.

So

I know what's

on the line when he leaves.

When he's gonna be sitting on the plane, he's gonna be on his way over to this bad place. It's

it,

you get the butterfly in the stomach. It's, you know, we're not impervious to be normal people. But when push comes to shove and the door opens, he's gonna be a soldier like he's supposed to be and he's gonna do what he needs to do to survive Mike. And I got a little extra surprise for you. We want you to

pick out your favorite color because while you're on your tour of duty,

you're gonna get a new paint job.

Thanks,

y'all do great stuff here.

Well, you guys want to get it up on the lift and let them see the underside.

Let's do

that

up until that door open. How you thought you was getting the parks car, didn't you?

And Hard bar?

She should be a tire fryer.

You guys,

you guys did a lot of work in four days.

This is amazing, isn't it?

Makes you wanna drive it upside down. Then

you guys just did everything. We couldn't,

everything we wanted to do, but we couldn't, didn't have the time, didn't have the money

and this

is great.

I'm gonna take care of it and I'll have it forever.

It's amazing car for an amazing kid. He really deserved it.

So I'm just glad we could help him out.

Good.

Thank you very much.
