Welcome to the show as Chevy's fifth generation Camaro arrives for a horsepower TV. Groundbreaking build up

Camaro.

The closest thing to a vet yet for 30 plus years and four generations, it was one of America's all time favorite pony sized street machines from 1967 to 2002 when production ended for seven years. Now it's back better and more beautiful than ever, especially the SS with its retro meets mod style,

a rear wheel drive factory hot rod whose return was long awaited and still celebrated.

Of course, almost as soon as its debut in March of 09, owners could buy an outrageous array of aftermarket parts like these wild two piece design wheels. Now, today's show is not about styling and profiling. It's all about you guessed it, tire blistering pavement, pounding horsepower.

The 6.2 L V8 makes 426 horsepower at the fly wheel with a manual trans

400 with an automatic like this one,

the owner of this Camaro, by the way, is a special friend of ours you'll meet a little bit later.

Meanwhile, before he comes to pick it up, we're gonna transform that already potent power plant into a blown beast.

It's a trick flow, specially super charger kit that uses the Magnusson MP 2300 TV. S. The same one you find in the new cr one Corvette.

It's got a four low rotor that uses a 160 degree helix that takes less energy to spin up

inside is a self contained lubrication system. The intake manifold is cast aluminum

and it runs with the help of an air to water in inter cooler and this external cooling tank. Now you get all the parts plumbing and bracketry you need for a pretty straight ahead installation.

We start by removing the PC M which will take a plane ride to Magnusson for reprogramming.

Now we need to drain the coolant

but we'll save it for reuse. Later.

Next, the engine cover comes off

along with the passenger side vent tube.

Now the air inlet tube

and go ahead and get rid of it because it won't be used again.

Then after a series of disconnections including the coolant hoses, injectors

and other electrical connections,

the entire OEM intake assembly comes out

here are some important steps.

Vacuum the valley cover and clean the heads with alcohol or a similar solvent to eliminate oils and residue.

Finally cover the ports with tape.

Now take out the air box and filter

but go ahead and save them for later.

Now we can disconnect the radiator hose leaving the t fitting intact. And just move it to the side

up next disconnect the fans and pull them out,

using an impact wrench, removed the main harmonic balancer bolt.

You can't really see what Mike's doing right now, but I think I can show you on this motor basically, he's taking this drill guide from the kit

and it goes right in here. Now, those guide holes allow you to drill two holes that are half into the cranks, now

half into the pulley and after inserting dow pins,

that's gonna prevent the pulley from slipping on the crank because of that press fit.

We can finish up here by installing a new harmonic balancer bolt and torn it to specs

for you guys that have had LT one and LS one Camaros in the past, you know how hard they can be to work on the engine compartment is tight and the motors halfway underneath the cow. But with the new Camaro, you don't have to worry about that. The engines right in your face. All the connections are easy to get to and something that makes a super charger easy to install is the detailed instruction manual that comes with it.

All the photos are in color and the description for each step is thorough. So if you ever get the chance to work on one of these things, definitely take it up

the heat exchanger with two hoses connected, installs in front of the radiator,

the hoses have to pass through two holes in the splash shield, then we can finish installing it back up on top.

Now, time to reinstall the fans

up on the engine, we have to remove the coil packs along with some more pieces, but they're all in the books. So you don't need me to explain them

to give us clearance for the super charger. We have to remove the plastic wire loom covers from the coil packs themselves

with that handle. We can transfer the throttle body

and map sensor to the super charger and I'll tell you what.

We're not too far away from firing up. Our first ever fifth generation blown Camaro better hang with us.

Horsepower is back with our 2010 Camaro Supercharging project. The one that's gonna pack even more ponies into an already stout 400 horse L 99 engine

and it all happens. Thanks to this new super charger from trick flow.

After we bought this fuel supply manifold to the fuel rail

and install the supplied

oing gaskets. The blower is ready to go on

spray the head surface lightly with a little soapy water. This will allow the unit to slip into position without damaging the gasket.

There we are

next, we can reconnect the fuel injectors,

remount the coils and connect them on each side of the engine.

This new fuel line attaches to the stock fuel supply barb and to the fuel manifold on the super charger.

Now cut the blue and tan wires on the mass air flow harness and attach to the intake air temp sensor located in the supercharger.

Ok.

After installing a new tensioner pulley comes the two man job of routing the new belt by pushing the idler

pulley inward,

the air filter and air box can go back in place. Now

then on the other side, it's time to install the intercooler pump to the frame rail. Next, using a bracket from the kit, we can install the reservoir onto the passenger side coil bracket,

the air to water intercooler system we're working on right now is an efficient closed loop. But

to get a real overall picture of how it works, take a look at this diagram and the instruction manual,

the heated water from the inner cooler under the supercharger goes to the reservoir where it's pulled by the pump

into the heat exchanger. Now, this is where it gets the cool outside air

and it's sent back to the inner cooler to cool the incoming air charge.

And Matco makes a couple of tools to make this job a lot easier. One is this hose cutter

and this one. Now, this guy is our personal favorite. It's a ratcheting hose clamp plier. Once you attach a clamp to it,

it allows you to open it up so you can slide it around on the hose. Then once you slide it in place, you push the release lever, it tightens down on the hose and that's it.

And that's it for our plumbing.

Now, with our ECM re flashed and back from Magnusson, we can reinstall it and make connections.

Next. We need to remove the positive lug nut from the fuse center and install the wire from the inner cooler pump, wiring harness.

Zip, tie the harness relay to the factory harness,

then connect the yellow wire from the new harness to this ing fuse to give the pump power from the ignition.

Now, time to connect the new air inlet tube from the air box to the throttle body.

And at this point, we're ready for fluids. First, the coolant mixed we remove from the car goes back in the radiator.

Then we fill the intercooler reservoir with a 5050 mix of coolant and deionized water.

That's it for the super charger installation. Now, there were a lot of steps but the kit was well put together and that's why we didn't have any fitment issues. Now, if you're the type of guy that likes to do your own work in your home garage and you've got a little bit of mechanical common sense, you can do this job in about a day. Now, there is one little problem. I have. The super charger looks awesome sitting on top of that 0 99. But the coil packs and the injector harness, they're pretty ugly, but there's nothing a little cosmetic surgery can't take care of

I marked and taped the factory engine cover so I could trim away the large middle section

with a few other modifications. We've got a set of custom covers that add even more. I appeal to the blown L 99

after priming the fuel system with the Keyon engine off. This thing fired right up on the first crank.

Are we done? Not quite, we have a little ways to go. We better hurry though. The owner number 91 of the Cincinnati Bengals is on his way to pick up his toy.

We followed some idiot proof instructions and fired it up.

We're replacing the factory exhaust starting with these JB, a stainless steel shorty headers with oversized exhaust ports for better flow

and thick laser cut flans

followed by a new magni

low tool exhaust system with wide open, straight through mufflers

along with his car. Andre sent us these a set of wheels and tires custom painted to match the car's trim.

Camaro is, I think is one of the better sports car as far as American muscle is vintage, has been around for a while.

I was kind of disappointed when they stopped making them for a while, but I'm glad they brought them back

a little more power behind the tires. Now,

that's a lot of car.

Andre brought some of his best friends from back home to visit our shop and see his new prized ride

guys.

now though, it's time for us to see what our supercharging drill did for its horsepower.

Andre grew up watching his dad drag racer Camaro

and even had his own racing dreams for a while. That is actually the aspirations of becoming a racer. Um went down as the larger I got, the bigger I got. So, uh my dad has a story about

how I

myself from a safety to a linebacker to a down lineman to finish the office line. So

once I got about 300 I gave up the aspiration to ever get in the race car and driving

you good.

Oh, yeah,

I'm

ready.

A new stock Ss to barrel with automatic transmission makes about 335 at the rear wheels. We'll consider that our baseline 427

after several runs though. 429 is about the best we can get

good, but we should make more

out here. So, while Mike troubleshoots,

it's my job to keep Andre happy.

All the marbles

after all, this guy could crush us like a couple of hood rats if he got mad

at

us.

All right, man.

Well, it turns out we got our wires crossed with Magnusson who sent us the street tune flash for the computer.

So Mike's using their handheld programmer

to put the bad boy performance tune in it. It'll pick up a little more now,

all reset the play clock. We're back in action

now. We're getting somewhere 441.

But come on one more run before the game clock runs out.

That's it. 448 horsepower.

I think we're there. 451 ft pounds of

torque. Camaro.

You guys have heard us say plenty of times in the past that the camshaft is the brain of the engine. Well, it's also what gives it its personality to make sure your camshaft is doing the job. It was hired to do. It needs to be connected to the crank shaft with a well built sturdy timing set. Now down here on the table, we have three different cam drives. They range in price popularity and overall accessibility. Today, I'm gonna show you how to install each one and share the strengths and weaknesses of them. Now we're gonna start with the double roller, which is the most popular then move on to the gear drive and finally end up on the belt drive.

We're using our 383 mule motor for this series of test. Now to make the swap from the chain to the gear drive easier. I'm installing a summit two piece cam cover kit to speed things up.

You've seen us install these time and chains before just line up the dots. Now, the benefits are low cost, simple to install and they're pretty much indestructible. At most performance level.

The weaknesses in this set up are the chain will eventually stretch, throwing the cam or ignition timing off.

Back in the 19 sixties, the hot rod aftermarket introduced gear drives as a replacement for timing chains and that's because of the more accurate cam to crank operation. Now, the one we're using today is a floating idler gear set up that we picked up from summit racing. Now, the dual floating idlers or dog bone as it's called is self supporting and gets trapped in between the crank and the C sprockets.

This gear drive set up should last for the life of the engine.

And if your engine blocks been heavily align board, the design makes it fairly forgiving

on the downside, they cost about three times as much as a timing chain. Now, here's something else to keep in mind if you're working on a computer controlled vehicle that has knock sensors, the gear drive is not the way to go because the harmonics in the gear drive can affect the knock sensors and retard the timing in the engine.

Now, they make these things in two versions, noisy and quiet. If you end up getting a noisy version, your motor is gonna sound kind of like a blower motor without the blower

belt drives first showed up on push rod V eights back in the 19 eighties on pro stock race cars. Now, the design makes for smoother operation and it produces less harmonics in the chain or gear drive and that could cause engine damage in the long run. Now, another benefit is it takes less power to turn one over.

In extreme applications, the belt absorbs vibrations in the valve springs. Also cam adjustment is easier and less messy. The downside many engine builders don't trust the belt not to stretch and alter the case

crank relationship.

Then there's the price this system we got from Jessi. So goes for about 1200 bucks.

One more thing on the belt drive. If you run a super charger or Nitrous and you're making time and changes pretty regularly, that's the smartest and most efficient way to go. Well, there you have it three different ways to spin your engines camshaft or brain. Now, all you need to do is decide which one fits your budget and performance needs the most.

Oh, and one more tip. If you just have to watch your timing set,

drain the oil first.

Ok. Moving on. Most people wouldn't think about going to a car show without bringing along plenty of polish or detailing spray to clean and shine their finishes.

But wheels, well, they need their own special formula like mothers. All wheel missed.

You just spray it on freely. Allow the foam to do its thing for a minute or two.

Hose it off with a strong spray of water and wipe it clean with a terry cloth or microfiber towel. It works on all kinds of wheels and leaves them looking new.

Most of you guys wouldn't put your pri street machines up for the winter without some kind of fuel stabilizer. But what about smaller engines? Like a TV S lawn mowers or even little RC cars like this with glorified weed eater engines.

Weeks ago, Joe and I built a pair of RC,

gas powered race cars to go drag racing.

We never knew you could get so much power out of a 26 CC engine

or that the FCA car it was in would be so hard to drive

anyway, it was fun. But now it's time to put them up for storage. Anybody want to buy one of these,

start your engines as a fuel system revitalize that's specially formulated for two and four cycle small engines. Now it'll prevent rust, keep out water and even clean the carb. Now, as far as Joe goes, he may or may not do better next time at the races, but at least his little motor will be ready to fire up.
