Hey, welcome and buckle up for a special edition of horse power. It's the season showdown of one of the hottest heads up racing series in the country and we teamed up with the outlaw racing street Car Association and year one to bring you the one and only horsepower outlaw finals from Carolina Dragway.
Yeah, we're proud to be a part of such an awesome eighth mile racing series one that caught our attention. First time we saw these guys hit the strip
and that was here at Huntsville Dragway in Alabama. This hot new series had a remarkable recipe for thrills and excitement.
Each event, a unique heads up drag racing drama that fans grew to love and so did. We
big motors little tires and the challenge of getting one of these Real World rides down an eight mile piece of pavement.
Yeah, the drivers, all adrenaline junkies with an incurable need for speed and winning
every pass, whether they're racing somebody or just trying to get down the track. It's,
it's never left, you know, no holes barred.
The creator of this fast growing outlaw series is a veteran racer himself. Johnny Finn.
I still get chill bumps when I'm standing out here on the side of the track, you know,
to see the power and, and the uh excitement these guys race with is, is the ultimate rush to me.
Yeah, the ultimate rush from the ultimate outlaw series, every event leading up to a season finale showdown.
And it leads us here to South Carolina Dragway, also known as the House of Hook for Horsepower's Outlaw Finals. You bet for the top heads up winners. Not only some big bucks and bragging rights. Thanks to Gibson epiphone, a cool firebird guitar
for the fastest car.
We now meet the top dogs of drag racing's hottest new series
first, the fastest class outlaw 10 5 and Steve Kirk Junior.
Kirk's an old pro planning, nitrous fed power on 10.5 inch slicks and he turned a year of testing
into a year of winning.
We took our points races a AAA little bit more careful than a lot of other races that we've, that we've raced in
here, even with the championship in the bag. Don't count on Kirk taking it easy down here in Carolina.
No, man, you know,
you know, we're coming here with uh the track servant who is, is really good. The air is gonna be good this weekend.
So we're going for the record
and he brought the ammunition for it. A brand new 870 cubic against Big Block on ni
basically this name of the
time to actually run against uh blow and turbo
cars because they make such big power
on the, on the back end of the race track.
I think we're capable of running as fast as anybody.
Yeah.
Well, this looks uh like enough horsepower to set a record. I think. I think so.
In the limited street class, it was a turbo that turned the corner for Jeff Cooner going from Nitrous to a 2400 horse turbo setup led him to a record breaking 41 pass late in the season
and he was way ahead of the pack heading into the horsepower finals.
But after torching a cylinder had during a practice run, Jeff had doubts about his performance during this weekend's finale.
We really don't know what it's gonna do. It's just gonna, we're gonna have to sit back and wait and see, uh smoking a little bit. But I think the ring, we had to put new rings uh in the top. Uh
So, you know, if, if everything holds together that don't, you know, come apart, I think we, you know, I think we'll do all right. I know we've got some good weather and some cold air and if it does hold together, we might see some good fast passes. I think we're gonna see some fast passes. I mean, we,
I know this car is capable of it.
Um
You know, if the track is good, the weather's gonna be here. So
you know, we're definitely, we're not gonna lay down for them.
Ok. Our third feature catch up class is easy street where you plant big power on drag radio tires.
The points leader, the comeback kid Robbie Irwin
who uses twin nitrous foggers on his 632 cubic inch big block. It's a blast.
Uh, there's nothing like it. Uh, you know, driving a car with no wheelie bars on it, you know, standing up in the air.
It's, uh, it's awesome.
Well, here's an awesome run a few weeks ago. Irwin would like to forget running in the right lane of the semifinals
as I got out of the car and, uh saw the damage. It, uh, didn't look very good. Uh We did get the car home and get all the sheet metal off of it
and assess the damage and luckily,
uh it's just sheet metal. So Robbie, the comeback kid is just a couple of qualifying runs away from a well earned championship.
We uh deserve it.
My, me and my team, we've uh worked hard this year
and first round qualifying gets underway here at this year end celebration of speed and power
championships. Aside, it's anybody's race
in every class of the horsepower outlaw fight
when you're shooting nitrous to it or you're pushing 30 pounds of boost through a motor.
You have a cooler there, the faster speed,
more horsepower.
It's gonna be a hot night on a cool track at the house. Of hook as determined drivers race towards some new outlaw world records.
Ok. We're back with more of the horsepower outlaw finals. The sun's gone down, the temperature has gone down and I wouldn't be surprised to see some records go down here in the second round of qualifying
tonight. If the crews have added the right tune up for the cold night air cars will be making incredibly quick runs, if not.
Well, you get the idea.
Now, Easy Street's Shane Stack found the combination with his turbo Monte Carlo running a 507 at 100 and 44 miles an hour.
And we, we don't call him Thrill Milly for no reason at all. He's, uh,
you know, he's uh out to uh, set a record or, or set him back on the tail lights
and that's about the way it went all night in round two of qualifying with cars in all classes, struggling to get down the
track.
Any car that hooks it up and gets past the 60 is a play house
number.
Oh,
the final qualifying round on Sunday was a different story.
Little sun. A lot of good, cool air
and perfect conditions for record breaking eight mile runs.
Easy street's Robbie Irwin qualified second with a top et of 522 behind Shane Sta
Cooner S 477 put him in second place. A limited street
and an outlaw 10 5 Turbo Tim Lynch runs a 446 with a seven before Kirk backs up. Last night's 448 going 446 with a one.
And
that is a new outlaw 10 5 world record
so far.
But on this fast track, not enough for number one qualifier,
Tony Johnson came out from nowhere to run a 445 in his 69 Camaro. A
car powered by a supercharged hemi
same exact motor. They run an alcohol funny car
runs a P si screw blower.
I don't know exactly what they make, I think with a hot tune up probably 3500 horsepower being number one qualifier. I don't, I don't need to get
beat this early in the race. So I'm gonna try to tune it down some more. It may, maybe it'll stick to the track better and it might even run faster with a smaller tune up in it.
It's almost time to see who's got the right tune up for eliminations
as they pull out all the stops at the horsepower finals. Hoping the House of H
lives up to its name.
Hey, welcome back to the House of Hook and Horsepower Outlaw finals. Now we're getting ready to start elimination as there already been one world record set. Now, keep watching because there's gonna be plenty more
in the last round of qualifying. Steve Kirk set a new ET record with a 446 backed up by a first round 448.
Moments later, Tim Lynch and his mustang set a mile per hour record at 174.
Flash forward to the quarter finals when Kirk sleeps at the line and Ken Rainwater puts him on the trailer with a 456 at 158 miles an hour.
In this close race. Lynch passes Mike Hill running a 439
the first leg of another new world record
later in the semis, Jack Barfield and Jimmy Blackman both have trouble at the 60 ft bar.
Then Blackmon crosses the center line for a disqualification.
So it would be Barfield against Lynch in the finals here beating Ken Rainwater
in easy streak semifinals. Irwin finally goes down when Ku Banks runs a 509 over Robbie's 526.
Then comes the unstoppable Shane Stack
with a 508 against Kim Kincaid's problem run.
So it's Stack and E Banks in the finals of easy street
limited streets up
next
leader Jeff Koner has to lift in this match up against Jerry Gunner
later. It's Eric Dillard who sends Gunner home with a 480 at 100 and 61 mile an hour.
And Carlton Thompson earns a final spot beating Ragsdale who gets off the gas at mid track.
So Dillard and Thompson are battling it out for the limited street crown
in the finals of the index classes. Bindle
runs a perfect 70 to defeat points champ Ricky Pennington
in the six second class. Another close one as Pete
Ferson hits the beam at 606 enough to beat Charles Richards 611
in the 530 index. Roger mcconnell can't get his angle off the line while Kenny
Ay runs a 5309.
So three more races left finals of the heavyweight heads up classes and horsepower's outlaw finals
can anything stop Tim Lynch and the Lynch mob from their winning record breaking rampage will Jack Barfield and his Camaro spoil Tim's power party. Anything can happen when the remaining racers line up for the climax of the horsepower outlaws.
You can tell it's not about the money with these guys. They just love to go fast food
outlaw drag racing.
Ain't nothing like it
ain't nothing that touches it
to the fans. It's the most real world man and machine competition you can witness
to the racers. It's what they work and live for year round.
These guys on test passes go like it's the last race they'll ever make
that excitement.
Uh
I don't think you can train somebody to do that is just spread into them.
They came from around the country to this landmark track in South Carolina
away from their day jobs and weekday lives.
You're in a place where fast car dreams can unfold.
These three
Osco racers, the payoff came early in the weekend with enough points to grab a coveted season championship.
But when you're a true competitor, you're only as good as your last race
in this last race of the season, the horsepower outlaw finals was all that mattered.
Of course, the only thing better than ending your race season with a win is also ending it with a world record.
Even in qualifying racers were closing in on record runs, especially in the outlaw 10 5 class.
What is the outlaw, et record?
Well,
flash back to November 2005
when Terry Robbins unloads his Camaro at Huntsville Dragway for an OSA
points race. First. He runs the first ever 450 in qualifying.
Then tops that with a 449
the first outlaw to run in the fours but not the last
on Sunday's third round qualifying. Steve Kirk runs a 446 that had already backed up in round one.
Then Tony Johnson runs a 445 which he fails to back up
later in eliminations though. It was Turbo Tim Lynch who runs an amazing 439 beating Mike Hill.
Ok. Here we go with the climax of the top three heads up classes first easy streak where it Shane Stack against K
Eubanks
and stack racks up another win with a 508 as Eubanks has trouble at the lower end
limited streak. Finals,
Carlton Thompson spins the tires and Lynch his teammate, Eric Dillard Soars to a 485 at 157 taking the win
and now the big one outlaw 10 5
as Jack Barfield lines up against Tim Lynch. And what a race? What a finish Lynch sets a new world record with a 436 at 172 miles an hour.
Finally, the moment racers dream about
standing in the winner's circle trophy in hand. The flash of pictures
and the thrill of knowing on this special night they were the best in their class.

We have been plagued with bad luck forever.
