Hey, welcome to horsepower.
You know, there's no denying it.
The Five Mustang is the hottest car to come out of a factory in many years
and even though they look good and perform well right out of the box. Well, the tuners like Ralph have been quick to step up with their own tricked out versions or like the stage three here. Of course, it's got the six piece arrow body kit
and 18 inch chrome wheels.
Plus this one has the optional interior package with leather and cool dash trim.
Now under the hood, there's a supercharged version of Ford's three valve 4.6 L V8.
Now that's one sweet ride. You know, we've been dying to get our hands on one of these ponies ourselves. So today we're going to use this five GT to see how much horsepower we can make off of bolts on parts. Now, the owner Matt Patchak
has already slammed a set of 433 Richmond gears in the rear end. Otherwise
it's bone stock
and banging for more horsepower.
Now, here's part of what we got in store for this Mustang power play first, the K and N Cold air kit,
then we'll try some Flowmaster American Thunder Mufflers and the horsepower headliner. Well, this is X Nitro Skip. The first one made specifically for the five Mustang. But first, as always, we've got to get a baseline on the
dyno Jet. See we got to work with.
All right, looks like 255. The rear wheels is our baseline. That's not too bad, but I guarantee you we can get a lot more power out of it. Once we make it breathe better
to remove the stock air intake, we disconnect the mass air sensor,
then we can get the air intake air box assembly out of the way.
Then use a couple of stock valve cover boats to install this tube mounting bracket.
Next take the mass air sensor from the stock inlet tube and transfer to the new one.
The kid includes this torque wrench to help you make the swap,
then run the tube through the saddle bracket
onto the throttle body
tight down the clown.
The kit comes with this air vent hose that goes from the valve cover intake port
to the air inlet tube that we just install.
Hey, here's one of those new five features. I mentioned. The stock intake tube contains this hydrocarbon trap. You got to reuse it, just drop it inside the air charger assembly.
The assembly goes inside the new intake tube
after we censor down,
this thing will be ready for another run
Ok. At 265 that's 10 more horsepower. Let's get it on the lift and make it exhale better.
Hey, well, we've got this thing up in the air. Let me show you some of the new designs forwarded underneath the 05.
It has a newer design, stiffer suspension for better handling and bigger disc brakes than before.
Also new for the five. It has a two piece drive shaft with a carrier bearing and CV joint to transfer power more efficiently. And the stock tail pipes are 2.5 inch manual bent stainless steel from the manifold back
and they run all the way to the rear over the axle before mounting up to the muffler. Now, these flow masters will bolt up easily in their place and they already have a fully welded four inch stainless steel tip and hangers.
This is one of the easiest swaps you'll ever make. Just unbolt, the hanging brackets loosen the clamp and the muffler will come right off
to bolt the new ones up, slide your clamp into place, attach your hanger brackets to the hangers
and bolted into place.
That's better than I imagine six extra horsepower and a hell of a lot better sound.
That means we bumped it up from our 255 baseline to 271. 16 extra horses. Not bad, but still a little reality check on the cost so far. The K and N fuel injection, perform
kit, set us back about 260
we spent another 435 for the Flowmaster Mufflers. That's still a little less than 700 for both.
But what do you say? We give this new pony a good old fashioned shot of nitrous. We're going to do it when we come back and you don't want to miss it.
Hey, welcome back to the shot where today we're hiking up the horsepower on America's favorite new muscle car, the five Mustang.
You know, it's amazing how quickly the aftermarket stepped up with performance parts for this new pony,
like the KNN fuel injection performance kit. We just bolted up for an extra 10 horsepower
along with the flow master buffs
that gave us another six.
Not bad, but the best is yet to come
and it's coming from this purple bottle. Now, as we told you before XX was the first company to release a kit specifically for the five GT
and it installs in only a couple of hours. Now, I've already mounted the brackets in the trunk. So here's a tip. It's always important to use a gauge on the bottle to keep an eye on the pressure, which performs best at 900 to 1000 P. Si
now I'm just going to mount this in the trunk and we can put it on the lift and run our Nitrous line.
I already ran the line through the body gromit in the front of the trunk.
So the design of the Mustang itself helps make this installation easy.
Now, when running the line up to the engine bay, always try to keep it tucked inside the chassis in a way from moving parts or heat.
One killer thing about this kit is its purpose built just for the five Mustang and everything's custom fit just like the length of the Nitrous line itself. Now, this is the Nitrous Management unit and it has everything from the solenoids and filters for both fuel and nitrous and the electronics to activate the system. I'm going to go ahead and mount it right here on the heat shield.
Here's another tip for you. There should be about six inches between the nozzle
and the throttle body to allow the nitrous fuel and air to mix before it enters the intake manifold.
That in mind we should drill the hole about right here on the tube. By the way, this nozzle has a design that's different than we've seen before. It adjusts fuel enrichment with bottle pressure. So the engine never runs too rich or too lean.
Now, we need to thread the hole we drill with the eight inch tap included in the kit
screw in the nozzle.
And after reattaching the tube
insert the nitrous and fuel jets
and connect the delivery lines.
Now, there are two ways to arm this Z
system. One is the old standby toggle switch and
there's one of those in the kit. But here's a better idea,
the new powerpoint arming switch,
it just plugs up here inside the armrest. And by the way, that red buttons for a perch kit, we'll show you later after running the powerpoint wire through a plug in the firewall connected to the red wire coming out of the NMU,
then we can ground the black wire to the chassis or in our case, the engine block.
Finally, we connect the white wire from the box to the throttle position sensor.
All right, go ahead and key up the ignition.
Now we can go ahead and program the NM US electronic activation switch.
And after arming the system to depress the programming button on the box,
then after holding the gas pedal down for 10 seconds, release it, turn the arming switch off back on again and the box is programmed,
the led located on the box will flash when the solenoids are activated.
This lets you know the NM
is working properly.
The final step of the installation is to install this Ford fuel rail adapter. Now, this will allow us to pull fuel from the engine to the nitrous kit. Be careful though even though the engines off, it can still hold a lot of pressure.
So wrap a rag around the factory fuel pressure sensor and remove the two bolts that hold it on the rail,
letting the fuel that's under pressure, soak up into the rag.
Next, use some lubrication and insert the pressure sensor into the adapter
and secure the assembly to the fuel rail mounting pad with bolts and washers from the kit.
Finally run your fuel line from the NMU to the adapter.
After an inspection of electrical connections and plumbing, we're ready for a final run. But while Mike straps the car down,
I want to show you that purge kit we alluded to earlier. Now, everybody knows it's a good idea to purge your system at the track to make sure you got nitrous at the solenoid.
This machine gun kit from sex also features this led unit to light up the cloud burst and this rapid fire module to pulse the light and the solenoid.
The result is a machine gun blast of color and noise that really will get their attention.
We're using the kit, 75 horse jets,
but it's adjustable up to 175 horsepower.
That's a pretty good power, 336 horsepower at the rear wheels. Now, we could step up the nitrous jetting and get more after modifying the ignition timing in the stock computer, but no time for that today. However, here's a quick recap first, a baseline of 255 horsepower in the stock five.
Then 265 after the KNN Cold Air kit,
271 after the Flowmaster mufflers and now 336. So we've gained a grand total of 81 horsepower
and the cost, well, the XK goes through about $620. So the grand total of our power build up is about 1300.
And I got to tell you
my money,
this new Mustang lives up to the height, both in looks and performance. Yeah. Too bad. Chuck's not here, but I think he's got a little too much pony envy to appreciate this. But we do and we'd appreciate you coming back to watch more horsepower

Of course, it goes
back to the beginning with his dad
and the various vehicles they've had.
We're just delighted with it and we're glad to be able to show it to people this night. Tonight is a special night

sort of,
it was also time to introduce a new book that chronicles the made in America. Story of the Edel Brocks, the story of a family and their friends who followed their passion for cars, whose competitive spirit led to a powerful industry.
Of course, Vic Edelbrock S
was at the center of that industry until his untimely death in 1962
when Vic Jr followed the manly dream on into history making success.
When Vick Jr takes you through the property, now, the factory and the
buildings and everything
you have to use the word. Amazed you really do. It's amazing
what he did with that company. He's got a lot of passion, a lot of heart
and that's, you know, that's, that's his goal is to,
he's not there just to make money, he's there to develop products for,
you know, basically an industry and a culture.
While the special car exhibit is temporary. The book adolescence of Big Dreams and hard work are legacies that live on for future generations.
What you tell the younger people is it didn't happen all overnight.
And there was a lot of hard work, went into this from both my father's side, my side and the people that work for me.
So they have to appreciate that and they have to realize that you're going to go out and work hard
and do what you want to do,
work hard so you can play hard, you know,

It doesn't take most people long to learn the basics of tig welding. But there's always room for improvement,
like learning the backstabbing technique that Dan Bracken's going to show us.
Well, Dan created two examples of some welding here and
both of them were fine, but there is a big difference right there.
Yes, there is. Uh
this
is a continuous weld on two pieces of plate
where I have it tacked up and I started my weld at one end
and continued nonstop to the other end.
Uh When you're welding, you create
uh
heat
and as it heats it cools as you go along
and when you do a continuous weld like that,
you have a rhythm in it. And if you're, you were continuous, that rhythm stays with it from the beginning to the end as it heats and cools, which will give you some warpage in it. If you look at this piece, you'll be able to tell
that we have some warpage in that piece from the heating and cooling in a, in a nice rhythm.
And on this piece, I did what was called a backs stepping process
and on a backs steping process. What I did was I tacked these two pieces of plate together.
I laid them out in two inch increments
to my preference.
I put tacks at these two inch increments and at the ends to keep the piece there,
I started my weld from right here in this direction,
came back
to this weld, started it from here to this direction, back, tied it into the first weld. And I continued this process the whole way through
what that does is that breaks up that rhythm of heating and cooling.
It takes, uh, doesn't put as much stress into the piece and it keeps it a little bit straighter for you. So you don't have that uh,
extra time trying to straighten it out
back.
And that's a, that's a good tip and it does, it take
much extra skill over the traditional method.
No, it doesn't. Actually, you know, you just have to be cautious of what you're doing and make sure that when you start your weld, you tie into the weld before the one that you just ended,
you don't want to leave a gap there. You want to make sure that they're all tied in good
and you have no gaps in there.
Uh It's a pretty good weld for, uh, the purpose that it serves.
It doesn't completely take out all of the
stress and uh warpage, but it takes out a good bit of it
obviously. So. Well, even if you've been at this a few years, there's always something new to learn, isn't
there?
Yeah, I, uh welded for quite a few years before I pick that up.
