Hey, today we're gonna build a big inch big horse small block for you. Mopar

fans. Now you're gonna have to excuse me. I'm late for work

today on horsepower TV. It's Mopar

Mayhem on the show as we build a 426 cubic inch small block with new state of the art heads, high performance carb and intake. Plus we'll

dyno this baby as we shoot for 600 horsepower at the crank.

Plus you asked for it. More horsepower bloopers our best of the worst. Uh That felt good.

If you've been watching us for several years, you might recognize this 70 duster that we built up on the show. Now, it's a tense streeter runs on pump gas cranks out 670 horsepower. Thanks to that 500 cubic inch indie cylinder heads big block. Now, since then, this baby's been known to win several street car shootouts

next

star. 69 Holly Roadrunner. Now it too uses an Indie cylinder head big block, but this one is 542 cubic inches and cranks out 700 ft pounds of torque.

Now, this original four speed car was restored by John

Balo of Muscle car restorations with a little bit of help from year 1426 has been a magic Mopar number for years, both with the max wedge and the

hemi.

Well, today we're gonna build a better rat trap and our own 426 by pushing the A engine envelope to the extreme.

Now, the A engine is Chrysler's small block that's either 340 or 360 cubic inches.

Now, you guys that have been working with these engines know of their inherent deficiencies. For instance, the stock lifter boards are 59 degrees and cylinder head ceiling is limited by only 10 head boats good points. Now, to get our 426 cubic inches, we need both a big bore and a big arm. So we're starting with Mopar performance R three Siamese bore cylinder block. Now, it comes with additional head bolt holes and four bolt mains. Of course, later on, we're gonna show you some cylinder heads that make use of these extra head bolt holes for improved cylinder ceiling while still retaining those 59 degree lifter bores. Now, the block has been prepped by indie cylinder head and we've already installed a RP head and main studs.

Our crank here comes from mo par performance. It's a four inch stroke cast crank with internal balancing. Now we've hung a set of eagle 3d rods that are stock a in length on a set of weo

pistons with four and 1/8 inch bores. By the way, the small dome here gives us a 12.5 to 1 compression ratio.

This setup uses 1/16 inch Molly face rings. They come from Speed Pro and

I guess we'll get started but dropping in this crank,

we torched the main studs to 85 ft pounds on the inside, 80 on the outside.

The pistons and rods are next.

Now, make sure to use some of Eagle's Rod boat lo before torquing these down to 63 ft pounds.

One of the keys to making this combination work is the cam shaft. And our 426 uses an off the shelf grind from comp cams. Now, this is a 610 lift solid flat tappet piece and hey, we're gonna use some new technology to get roller cam performance out of this flat tappet design.

That's also gonna allow us to retain those 59 degree lifter boards and make use of those extra cylinder head boat holes that we told you about earlier.

The shoe back lifters have a silicon nitride coating here on the base. It's one of the hardest materials known to man.

Now, what that's gonna do is eliminate camshaft wear completely and allow us to run a lot stiffer bow spring. Now, we've got our set at 200 pounds at the seat.

After lubing the camshaft with regular motor oil, just slip it in place,

then install the cam plate, making sure the retainer bolt with the oiler hole in it is installed up here.

Well, the timing set is next and we're using a roll master that uses billet gears and multiple keyways on the bottom sprocket here. Now, that's gonna allow us to advance or retard our cam shaft.

Now we're gonna set ours at two degrees retarded, which ought to help our horsepower figures on a big inch engine like this one.

The oiling system is the lifeblood of any engine and to keep ours alive, we're using this high volume pump with a Milon

pickup plus a seven quart street strip pan here from Charlie's. Now, the neat thing about this pan is it eliminates any need for this ugly old seal because Charlie has tightened up the tolerances and, well, all that's required is the thin beat of silicone. Well, let's get this thing on now.

There we go. 33 ft pounds.

Now, the last piece that we're gonna bolt up is this A T I two ring super damper? Now, we like it because if, and when we need to, we can send it back and have it rebuilt.

Hey, welcome back to the shop and our 426 small block build up.

Well, so far we filled our short block here with a Mopar performance Stroker crank Weis

go pistons on a set of eagle rides and a comp cams flat tap at camshaft. Well, after buttoning up the bottom end with our Charlie's oil pan, I guess we're ready to look at our heads.

Hey, if we're gonna build a better rat trap, we're gonna need to crank out six 100 horsepower or more and to do that, we need to move a lot of air both in and out of the engine. Now, the Edelbrock performer RPM is probably one of the most popular aftermarket heads for the small block Mo

Park.

Any cylinder head starts with semi finished Edelbrock heads then takes them to the next level by relocating the intake push rod locations. Now that allows them to enlarge the port openings and follow up with their super modified port job. Now these things are gonna flow 275 CFM past the 2051 60 valves.

Well, earlier, we told you about a head that would allow us to use those extra bolt toes for better ceiling and allow us to run up to 12.5 or higher compression ratios without blowing a head gasket. Well, here it is, it's a new casting from

cylinder head with these extra bosses for those bolts.

The intake volume is 210 CCS and they flow, get this 330 CFM. Of course, the valves are larger too 2 101 650. Now, even with these extra bosses, the heads work on any 340 or 360 block. Now, later today,

we're gonna try out a pair when we head to the engine, dyno.

Hey, those are some pretty impressive numbers. Now, I've already dropped the lifters in and also dropped on one of the cylinder heads. Now to further ensure that we have good cylinder ceiling. We're using these

fro head gaskets with an Integra O ring.

Now, this baby is ready to torque down and we're gonna crank each one of the studs to 95 ft pounds.

All right. Well, the rocker assembly we're using compensates for the relocated push rides

with a 150 offset intake rocker say one used on the 440 big block. Now, after we get them laid in place, we'll torque them down to 35 ft pounds. Then lash the valves,

we're gonna match those Edelbrock heads with their single plane victor intake. Now, this one mounts a 1025 CFM race demon carb.

This carbs got plenty of air flow to feed our 426 and

also give us a good booster signal for Chris throttle response. Now it's also got down leg boosters and interchangeable venturia so you can tune the carb for your own application

before we drop on those valve covers. Let me show you something. It's important to break in your valve train properly because after all, you don't want a dry start that could damage your expensive components.

So we're gonna use some of the slip coat spray from comp cams on all the rockers, springs and shafts.

That way, we'll have a nice gel coating on all the valve train parts to protect it during the first critical minutes of start up.

High horsepower engines generate more than their fair share of heat. So you need to keep a lot of coolant circulating through the system. Now, we're gonna use this Missouri Electric water pump that pushes 35 gallons per hour.

The installation starts with the backing plate first

followed by the pump

with 12.5 to 1 compression and a power band up to 7500 RPM. Well, we need a good reliable ignition. So we're dropping in this pro billet distributor from MS D along with a set of their 8.5 millimeter superconductor wires. Now, this will ensure compatibility with that MS D ignition box that's already bolted up at the

dyno now, we hate to bolt on out of here, but we need to head on up to the dyno ourselves. We'll meet you there right after this short break.

All right, welcome back. While you were gone. We made a trip up here to Indy cylinder head for a little

dyno time.

In fact, I guess we're getting ready to see if we did build a better rat trap with that 426 Mopar small block. Well, the engine's already on the

dyno and, and I heard him warming it up but just a little bit ago. So let's go check it out. All right.

Well, if you remember we started with a mobile

performance Siamese bore block and Stroker crank, then we filled it with Weiss co pistons and capped everything off with a set of Edelbrock Indie cylinder heads and a Victor intake. Well, now, what do you say we bring this rat killer to life?

Yeah. Sounds pretty good.

Well, this is Kenny Lazar, the resident engine builder here. And, well, I guess we're ready for a run. If it's warmed up, it's warmed up at two, then let's see what we got. All right.

Ok. That's a pretty stout passing this little rat killer. But, uh, how about the numbers? 600 horsepower, 565 ft pounds of torque when a torque is that close to the horsepower? It makes a wild street strip engine. Yeah, I'll say. But, uh, how are you gonna get more horsepower out of this thing.

We'll show you how. Ok.

Hey, I'm way ahead of you guys. Now, these Edelbrock Indie cylinder heads are about as good as it gets for a street strip engine,

but an engine will only run as good as its intake port. And, well, that's where these 210 CC ports on these Indie 3 60-2 heads come in.

Of

course, those oversized runners require the use of these offset rockers too.

Yeah, Chuck, we just came out with his intake to go with these heads. It's a high rise featuring a deep plenum and extended runners. You can't make it any better than this. Well, let's throw it on there and make another pull.

Hey man, check out the print out on that run 665 horsepower at 6900 RPM. Well, the new heads and intake and definitely worth 65 horsepower, but check it out. The torque stayed about the same, moved up the scale about another 1000 RPM. That's stout. I'll tell you what neither configuration.

This is a motor that'll trap rats on the street or strips. Well, speaking of the street man, we need to hit it again. Get back to the studio and we'll see you there.
