You wanna supercharge your sport compact? Hey, we'll show you how on the show today

today on horsepower TV.

It's operation Honda hop up as we both on a super charger and turn this little sport compact into a pocket rocket before testing the power gains on our dyno Jet

and we'll hit a local track to meet some warriors in the war of the imports.

I can have a Chevy or Ford, but uh here I've managed to put a Volkswagen together and run with the Chevy

Ford.

So hang on for horsepower TV.

All right. Welcome to the horsepower shop like it or not. Sport compacts are hot these days

and the owners are just like you and me. They want the rides to look good and go fast. Whether it's American Iron like this Dodge Neon or an import or like this Honda.

That's right. Now, one of the best ways to make more horsepower is by forcing more air and fuel into the engine. Now, this 93 prelude already has an F Max turbo system that's sold and installed by the

down there at hot rods in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Now it uses hot exhaust gas to drive the impeller.

And from there, the compressed air goes through this tube and down through an inner cooler, back out the other side and through more tubing before it finally ends up at the throttle body. Yeah. Turbo charger is a great way to make power. Although that long distance from the compressor to the throttle body can cause your turbo

lag plus a lot of heat is transferred from the exhaust to the incoming air charge. Of course,

that heat is absorbed by the inner cooler to make things more efficient. Yeah, but there's more than one way to nudge your neon or hop up your Honda and bolting a super charger on is one of them. Now, this one from Jackson Racing displaces 62 cubic inches

and it's limited to six P SS I boost by the pulley size here. Of course, bolting one of these on your stock. Honda is gonna add about 35% more horsepower and even more if you have a cold air induction package or a free flowing exhaust.

Well, this 99 Civics got both of those. Just check out the headers here. Cold air package even has an MS D ignition

and adjustable Camps pockets. So I'd say it's an ideal candidate for that super charger over there.

So we'll bolt it on after we get some baseline numbers on the dyno Jet.

Well, there you have it 100 and 32 horsepower at the drive wheels. Now, what do you say? We disconnect the battery drain the coolant and spin some wrenches.

You're gonna start by removing the strut tower brace,

all the air inlet components,

disconnect the electrical harnesses and use the labels provided in the kit for reference,

disconnect the throttle cable,

remove the fuel pressure and return lines.

Then on both the throttle body

and after removing two bolts holding the air control valve in place, you can remove it and the throttle Bonnie as a unit.

Well, now we can remove the intake manifold. There are 10 boats and studs that hold it to the head

and don't forget about the two boats that attach it to the support bracket,

then replace this fuel return line with a longer one that comes with the kit. And

while you're down here,

push this hose fitting down a bit. So it'll clear the supercharger once it's installed

and finally

the alternator comes out.

So, are you ready for this thing? Now, I sure am. Now, our supercharger is gonna drive off of the alternator. So we're gonna replace this single pulley

with this dual one that's included in the kit.

Now, we'll also need some extra room for the belt that's gonna drive the supercharger and this new alternator bracket will move the alternator back and give us the room that we need.

Would you mind installing this while I get on this pulley? No, it'd be my civic duty.

Now, before we reinstall that alternator. We need to modify the power steering return line to give some extra clearance for that blower drive belt. It's a metal line. So, just gently bend it toward the firewall to straighten it out.

Well, I just installed the alternator along with the belts for it. And the super charger now need to hook up the wiring.

Hey, great job partner. Well, thanks. Well, now we're ready for this super charger belt tensioner bracket. Now it just goes right in here on top of the alternator and bolts right up to the block. Well, well, Chuck's taking care of that. What do you say? We take care of some of our sponsors. We'll be back to wind up our blower build up after this

later. You'll see there's more than one way to hop up a Honda or build a bug for serious competition.

We'll look at the giant trend of sport compact racing

for the latest news on horsepower TV. Check us out online at Horsepower tv.com.

Hey, welcome back to the shop and our Honda blower build up using a kit from Jackson racing. Now, while you were gone,

we went ahead and finished up with that tensioner. Plus, we repositioned some of the coolant hoses and rerouted our main wiring harness to go under that new intake manifold

right now. I'm gonna lay the super charger right down in here just for the moment

reason we're doing that is once we bolt up the intake manifold, there won't be enough clearance between it and the firewall. Well, I guess that means we're ready for that new intake here. Give me a hand, sliding it over the studs. Ok. Here we go. All right,

with a blower bolts to the bottom of the intake manifold, using these four allen head bolts, they're included with the kit. Now

add a little bit of thread lock to help keep them tight Once they're torque down to 16 ft pounds,

once the mounting bolts are tight, give the pull

a few turns there to make sure that your rotors are spinning freely. Then we can go ahead and install the pipe plugs

right here in the intake manifold.

And finally, once we get this done,

we can go ahead and start reconnecting all of our hoses and vacuum lines

and here's something to pay special attention to make sure you clamp this hose to the bracket here on the intake. Otherwise, it could interfere with the throttle cable and really cause you some problems

and that's a great tip. Well, we don't want that throttle hanging wide open on us. You bet. Now, speaking of throttles, we're about ready to reinstall the new throttle body and the I AC valve. Now they just go right on the front of the super charger and make sure that you also install a new throttle body gasket.

Well, now we're ready to install the fuel injectors and the fuel rail

then the fuel injector regulator adapter is next.

Well, now we can install the high pressure fuel feed line.

There we go,

followed by the fuel injector wiring.

Well, as you can see, we've made some progress with all the hoses and wiring.

Now, since we're gonna force more air into this engine, it stands to reason we need to feed it more fuel as well. So the kit comes with this fuel enrichment relay

and it bounces under the fuel filter bracket here. Now it splices into the air temp sensor

with the black wire here going to our new pressure switch.

Finally, this wire connects to a switch 12 volt source.

Now, the other part of our fuel enrichment program is this fuel regulator that comes as part of the kit.

Now, the center port connects up to that longer fuel return line that we installed earlier

and the outer port connects up to another fuel line that eventually ends up right here at the stock regulator

on the fuel rail

there, there's that bolt.

We're gonna need a high volume pump to ensure a steady supply of fuel to the injectors.

So we ordered this one along with our super charger kit. It

installs directly into the fuel tank which we access by

removing this rear seat

there

while Joe's been busy back there. Hey, I've been busy myself topping off the coolant and changing the oil. Now we're using royal purple synthetic racing oil for a little bit of extra protection because, hey, that blower and our right foot are sure to put some extra demands on this motor.

Well, that fuel pump went it easier than I thought it would.

I guess. Now we can reconnect the battery and get this thing back on the

dyno

Jet.

100 and 78.8 called 100 and 79 horsepower. Now, that's 47 more than our baseline. And I don't care what you say. That's a serious performance upgrade for a pocket rocket like this.

Give you a new sense of a civic pride and maybe shut down a Chevy or two. Hey, watch what you say about those

ch

Now, what I'll say is that this thing is 50 states emissions legal and you can bolt one on in about a day in your driveway. Yeah, the project will cost you about 2800 bucks uh more if you have to take your partner to lunch. Hey,

now here's some food for thought from our sponsors. But stay tuned. We'll be right back

later. A cool billet shifter swap for a hot rod neon. But first a hometown battle in the war of the imports and sport compact

horsepower T V's race of the week is brought to you by Moroso the leader in the automotive aftermarket performance industry

this week. It's not a race but a racing trend that's invading drag strips around the country at

numerous national events like this one at Moroso Motorsports Park. The crowds are getting bigger while the cars are getting smaller. Yep, sport compact racing is the hottest thing to hit the 21st century

and not just here but a smaller eight mile tracks around the country as well as in the hometown garages of a new breed of racer

in Nashville, Tennessee. Ricky Shoemaker's race ride is a Honda Civic crx, one of the most popular little racing platforms going

but not Ricky's version.

You see, he swapped a stock Civic motor from what he got from an 85 Dodge charger

and mounted it in the rear.

I wanna have high power and I want to have the weight concentrated where the drive wheels were and at the back because when a car takes off, you know, more acceleration, the more the weight shifts at the back of the car.

I'm borrowing my brother's tools, but he'll never find out.

Ricky estimates it took more than 1000 hours of work and countless trips to the salvage yard.

The biggest challenge he says was building a new stout rear Subra

the sub frame here which is mild steel, uh

two by two tubes and two by three down the lower portion,

it's sort of

integrated into the car unitizes with the Honda.

He also

fed up a scoop to feed air to this inner cooler which is connected to the car's turbo charger.

Now up in the cockpit, you'll find even more of his homemade hot rotting tricks.

A

lot of people ask what this is. Uh, I had to take the parking brake out to do the rear engine work. So

instead of getting a red light, I can hold this. Now, this holds the car at the line, sort of a manual line lock and I can let go and I'm right there to get into gear. Well,

that's all I can do until I make my first trial run at the track.

That

the place Music City Raceway,

the event, a monthly battle of the subcompact where the sideshows consist of the usual burnout contest,

but there's also a low rider competition

and even a contest for the worst hair.

Now, they don't have a show car competition at this local event. But if they did, I know the import that would get my vote,

man. What a statement

Ricky came to compete in the quick 16 on his hometown eight mile strip

and with his rear powered Civic running in the mid eights, he was laying down some impressive qualifying

and elimination runs. That is until a hot all wheel drive talent got a whole shot on him in the semifinals. Basically, he got me right off the line and I kind of stayed with him like a car, Len was still behind all the way down and actually he finished up a mile an hour faster.

No doubt the man to watch here is Terry mcmillan and his vicious VW,

a twin car bug that runs consistently in the sevens,

I guess all my life, I've tried to be a little different. Uh, I could have a Chevy or Ford but, uh, here I've managed to put a Volkswagen together and run with the Chevy

for

the motor has been punched out definitely as a 2275 engine. But, uh,

our transmission is here for the eight mile track that

gives me an advantage of, uh, getting the car motivating,

uh,

getting the speed that I need to run with the V8 car.

It's the Volkswagen. When I go down the track, I'm loving every gear that I bang down through there. And then of course, if I can come back here and park it and get right back in it and start it and go do it again.

It's hard to see who's having the most fun. Terry or Cindy, his wife and Cucci

and we're just having a great time

and that's what it's all about. Life is supposed to be fun

and that's what we're doing. We're having a good time,

especially when you're winning.

Terry would face off against Brad

Mayo's twin turbo 97 supra.

And as expected his bad bug took the quick 16

with a 783 at 104 miles an hour.

He took his bumper off to try to pep his car up and, uh,

I loaned him some tools to do it. So I felt I'd done a good deed for the day. And uh

what can I say? We pulled it off

enough, said Terry's bodacious bug and Ricky's rear engine Honda are just two examples of the imagination and talent going into these compact, competitive racing machines.

No doubt about it. These sport compacts will play a big role

in the high performance street and strip future of America and beyond.

All right, welcome back to the horsepower shop. As we mentioned earlier, more and more of you are modifying sport compacts to make them run hard and look good.

This dodge neon, for example, has been slammed. Spoiler rolls on 18 inch rubber

and back here check this out.

Even as a Nipress kid

on the inside, it's got a full brace of gauges

and these really cool, see its complete with a set of five point racing harnesses. Now about the only thing that's missing is a performance shifter. But hey, we're gonna take care of that.

Yep. With this edge shifter from B and M pretty sharp, huh?

This stainless billet stick is a direct bolt and replacement that'll shorten your shift throws over two inches

and make it more accurate as well. Now, it's topped off with this polished billet aluminum knob.

Now, I've gotten started in here by removing the console and that'll give us access to the stock shifter,

remove the cables at the lower end of the shifter,

the three nuts on the top of the shifter assembly are next to go

and then you can pull the shifter right out.

Hey, good job over there. What do you mean getting the shifter out? No, I mean, getting yourself out of those tiny bucket seats,

tell you what, get to work on this. I'm gonna go make an appointment with my car, Oprah.

Now with this original shifter out, the first thing we wanna do is remove this ECL

holding in the upper spring assembly.

Then the spring itself can come out.

Next, we need to remove this plastic pushing here so we can transfer it.

Here. We go to the new shifter

loop, the new shift or ball with the grease that comes with the kit

and

install that bushing.

Ok. Next, we can install the spring

and spring bracket assembly

and after reinstalling the CLP, we can both this lever into the car.

Are you sure that 130 is as soon as you can work me in?

Yeah, my back is killing me.

Well, all right, I'll see you in about a little over an hour. Then

lucky for you. I guess this thing installs in less than an hour. You bet. Now let's get started by putting the shifter right back down here on the mount. Then we can reinstall those three nuts,

push the cable bushings onto the lower pins,

making sure that they snap into place.

Well, now what do you say we drop in the console and install our new shift or not?

Oh man, this thing is sweet solid and

the throws are a lot shorter. Well, that's great. But I tell you what, I'm gonna take my throne back to that car, Oprah.

Hey, hey, wait a minute. Not so fast. We still have hot parts to do.

And what happen for you right after this

and now hot parts brought to you by car parts.com, everything for your car, truck van or SUV.

You know, there's nothing like a set of headers to make your engine run better and that applies to you guys with imports too.

Now,

Brock has the tsunami headers. That feature laser cut

fangs a try. Why design for improved torque and stock style connectors for easy installation.

This Honda set is made of 17 gauge 409 stainless steel with a ceramic coating for durability and good looks.

Price looks pretty good too at 390

up.

Well, if you pumped up the power in your sport compact, chances are it won't be long before you need a high performance clutch assembly like this one from mccloud. Now they use a diaphragm style pressure plate for a low pedal pressure and the clutch disc borrows heavily from racing with this center died

facing here for maximum grip.

Now they have them for most popular applications and hey, you won't have to double clutch your wallet either.

They're 330 up.

Hey, while we're on a roll. Let's talk about how to keep your sport compacts, wheels and tires looking good.

This all wheel cleaner here from Castro is designed to work on all wheel surfaces from chrome to paint

and quickly release road grime and brake dust. Oh, while you're at it, they've also got this non solvent tire gloss that clings to your tires without any runoff. Well, hey, we don't want you running off this time next week because here's what you'd miss.

We'll show you how to build a 500 horse pump gas Pontiac 455 complete with forged pistons Victor Intake and 1050 CFM car.

Then we'll test this Iron Indian on our horsepower shop, dyno

in our race of the week. We'll follow a fast moving family competing in three hot classes at the I HR A Empire Nationals.

Plus, examine some cool tools for your shop

and remember, high performance fun is what this show is all about.

Well, how much fun did you have today working on these four cops?

Well, it was great right up until the point I threw my back out. I still need to go to the chiropractor though. I'll give you a ride. Come on. I got the keys to the K Neon.

Oh, no, no, no. He, here's the keys to my grocery getter.

I'll just jump in the back in the back.

Ok.
