Hey, Harleys are cool. Especially with more horsepower. We'll show you how it's done. So hang with us
today on horsepower TV.
We'll get our hands dirty hopping up a Harley with a passel of parts designed to drastically pump up the power.
In fact, you'll be astounded at the results. We get on the
dyno
Jet
in our race of the week. It's the NSC A Southern shootout in Darlington featuring America's fastest street cars where you'll ride inside some of these six second land missiles. This next bass. Keep your eyes
open. It's gonna rock and roll.
Yeah.
So hang on for horsepower TV.
Hi, welcome to the horsepower shop where we like working on anything that burns fossil fuels and spits them out the tailpipe. And since Harley's are so hot,
we thought we'd spend some riches on one today.
And now what we've got here is a 95 heritage soft tail. It's got a few miles on it, but the owner is just like us. He wants more power. Now we're gonna hop up this hog today with new heads pistons cam and carb. Then a little bit later on, we're gonna upgrade the ignition and at a high performance exhaust
bikes, like cars had their own speed shops. And we ordered these from R and B Cycle in Nashville, Tennessee. And, well, those guys are into all kinds of hall and Harley's from street bikes to those drag bikes you see at races around the country.
Now, the pistons assembled heads camshaft, carbon, even the intake all come as part of the performer RPM package from Edelbrock. Now, they ought to make that old heavy hog run like a greased pig. But you don't have to take our word for it.
That's right. You see, we brought in this special dyno Jet for motorcycles today and
right now we're gonna do a baseline to see what our work is worth later on.
Well, how'd we do?
Well, you made 56 horsepower at the rear wheel. Hey, that's not bad. But you know, it stumbled just a little bit when I first cracked that throttle. I noticed that. Well, let's get to work, man. I'm with you.
I've removed the seat, disconnected the battery and drained the fuel and now we can go ahead and remove the gas tank to access the top of the engine.
Then we remove the exhaust pipes,
the top engine mount,
plus the air cleaner intake manifold and carburetor.
Now we jack the bike up and the serious work begins.
Here's a tip that'll make your life a lot easier. Go ahead and remove the spark plugs, then kick the transmission into high gear.
That way you can rotate the engine by turning the rear wheel.
We're gonna start on the front cylinder
need to get this push rod cover out of the way here and I'll show you why
the rocker box tops come off
and now
we can rotate the engine
so that the valves are fully closed.
There we go. Now, this takes tension off the valve train here and we can remove these rocker base boats,
then remove the push rides and make sure of their locations by the color code on the tips.
Now, the four head bolts can come out
and you're ready to remove the cylinder head,
turn the rear wheel again to the pistons at the bottom
and slide the cylinder up to clear the studs and pistons.
Now make sure to stuff a rag into this crank case opening,
that'll keep any trash from finding its way into the engine block.
You'll need a small screwdriver like this one to pry the snap ring out that holds the wrist pin in place, be sure to cover it with your thumb. Otherwise it'll fly out and get lost.
Now, we can push that wrist pin out from the other side. Joe, give me a hand with that. Would you?
All right, I got it.
Well, there's our piston. Now, all we have to do is repeat that same procedure on the rear cylinder.
Our old pistons are cast flat tops while our new ones are dome forgings. Now, they're gonna give us about a 10.5 compression with those Edelbrock heads.
They're marked for front and rear cylinders with exhaust valve orientation. But, hey, before we install those, what do you say? We do a little camshaft swap.
Hey, man, how's it going over here? Well, now they got the back cylinder out. We're ready for that. But first, what do you say? We take a break? That's right now. We'll be back with more of our Harley hop up right after this
later on horsepower TV. Be there with the clutch drops and the chute pops. It's our red hot race of the week from Darlington International Raceway
for the latest news on horsepower TV. Check us out online at Horsepower tv.com.
Hey, welcome back to the shop where we're just about ready to bolt some hardware on our soft tail back there. Now, the camshaft that we're using is a roller replacement from Edelbrock that's been profiled to give that big Evo twin some additional horsepower
all the way to 6000 RPM.
My b,
hey, Joe back there has been hard at it. How's it going, Joe?
Well, I'm just getting these lifter boxes off. Now. You need to be real quick when you do this. Otherwise your lifters can slide out the bottom right into the engine block. Now, once you get the other one off here, we'll get to work on the timing cover and get that old cam shaft out.
After drilling out the rivets on the trim plate, remove it
and then the outside cover plate,
remove the sensor plate.
The timing rotor,
remove the bolts around the outside cover.
Then you can use a puller to break it free
with the cover out of the way.
There we go.
The old cam shaft comes right out and we're ready to install the new one. But first, we need to rotate the engine. So the timing mark on the drive gear is at the 12 o'clock position,
replace the C
bearing before installing the new camp shaft
line up the o with a mark on the drive gear.
Then time the breather gear by matching the timing marks and you're ready to put it all back together
before we start reassembly though, we need to check our piston, the wall clearance and here's how you do that. You start your measurement a half inch up from the bottom of the skirt
and perpendicular to the wrist pin.
Now, after you mic the piston, you'll also need to mic your cylinder and subtract the difference. We're looking for about 2.5 thousands. And if your numbers don't agree, well, you'll have to take your pistons and your cylinders in for machining.
Install a ring starting with the oil control set.
Make sure the dot On the second ring is facing up
and after the top rings in place, install one wrist pin snap ring.
Well, now we can install the pistons on the rods and make sure that you pay attention to those marks we showed you earlier for proper orientation.
Well, next, we need to wash the cylinders in hot, soapy water and dry them thoroughly before installing them.
Of course, unlock your car where you slide the pistons into the cylinder
on this Harley big twin,
while we slide the cylinder onto the piston
with our new base gasket in place. And the engine turned to put the piston at mid stroke, we installed the ring compressor,
then slide the cylinder over the piston
and to press the brake to keep the piston from moving while you move the cylinder on down against the block.
Now, our new heads are quite a bit different than the Stockers. For instance, the combustion chambers are 72 CCS
and their C MC profile to match the dome on our pistons. Plus they use a double squish area right here for efficient combustion.
Now, the valves measure 194 on the intake, 162 50 on the exhaust.
Unlike the round intake port that you'll find on the stock or the replacement head has a rectangular shaped port
that's been raised about an eighth of an inch for increased mixture velocity in a straight or shot
at
the intake valve. Now, over here on the exhaust side, you're gonna find a larger cross section area for increased flow
and ad shaped floor to help reduce exhaust reversion. Now, the best part is these ports are CNC ported from the factory for maximum flow
torque. The heads down. According to the factory manual,
we got the rear cylinder put together first and these tubes are in place.
Now, we can drop in our push rods in the order they came out.
Now, don't forget about that color coding.
Next, we need to rotate the motor again until the intake push rod bottoms out.
That'll take tension off the valve train while we reinstall this rocker base.
And here's an important tip for you.
Hydraulic lifters need to bleed down before you turn the engine over. So spin the push rods
to make sure they rotate freely.
The final piece of the performer RPM package is this quicksilver carburetor
and matching intake. Now, our big twin uses a spigot style mount but hey, this carburetor is also available with a two bolt flange for you guys that need it.
Venturia design actually increases air flow through the carburetor to improve fuel atomization and give us a quicker throttle response. We went ahead and ordered ours with these external adjusters for easy tuning.
That engine is gonna breathe a lot deeper with all these new parts. So we'll top off the carb
with this high flow chrome billet air cleaner. What do you think, man, man, that thing looks great.
Ok. We got more cool parts for this Harley hop up and we'll finish up right after this.
Hey, welcome back to the shop where we're just about to wind up our Harley hop up. Now, so far, we've added an Edelbrock performer RPM package that includes new pistons heads cam and carb
and fire this monster off. We're gonna use a crane H I four ignition,
the control module mounts right in place of the original and the wiring plugs right into the Harley harness. Now, it allows you to control everything from rev limiters to the rate of advance and you can even control your rear cylinder spark phasing to help optimize performance.
The coil is a Siamese design with two independent sections
and it mounts right here in the stock location
and uses the plug wires that are included in the kit
and you're gonna have to pop for a set of these 12 millimeter plugs. Now, the smaller diameter threads are needed to clear those oversized valves every time they're open
and there's nothing that sounds like a Harley and the best way to enjoy that sounds through a set of good pipes.
That's why we're using this Dale
Pulley designed exhaust system from HP racing. It's a classic Quinn Pipe dyno
proven design that well, looks as good as it sounds.
Well, speaking of dyno proven,
let's get this thing buttoned up and strap it to the dyno so we can see what our work is worth. Let's go.
Well, this thing sure feels a lot stronger. What did
dyno Jet say? Oh man, that trip to RB cycles paid off went from 56.7 to 87 horsepower. Oh, man, that's a great combination. Now, that's over a 50% increase in horsepower for under $3000. Yeah. And Harley's are not only fun to hop up, they're great to race
coming up on the show. It's a wild ride. We'll take you inside for all the thrills of fast street car competition in our race of the week and it's next
tv's race of the week is brought to you by Edelbrock,
the leader in automotive performance for nearly 75 years.
This week we're at Darlington International Raceway and about to see if any racer can stop Pat
Missy's win streak in that Pontiac Spinach can,
yeah, with consistent runs in the six eights and several convincing wins in a row. It was going to take quite a jab to knock old Popeye
Yi off his perch.
Well, if anybody can do it, it's the driver of
Yi's old car. The 69 Camaro that still delivers a Popeye punch of its own
with a 688 et at 100 and 95 miles an hour. Tony took top qualifying honors from his mentor, Pat
in the Edelbrock Pro street class.
The racetrack is pretty tricky. It's pretty bumpy out there.
I mean, anything can happen. You know,
cars are running good,
you know, they're close.
We'll see it's hot you know, but we just,
we got something, our computer didn't work, so we're kind of a little lost right now, but we'll get it together by race day. I'm sure
in the other fast is class outlaw street. We're about to see who can plant the most power on the street tires, street tires. Yep. With these three grooves and stiffer side walls, these babies are dot approved
Atlanta's Fast. Freddie Davis has lived up to his name leading the C
Cam's outlaw pack and points with this 95 pickle built Corvette
feels great. Uh,
like, uh, we won the Georgia race and run up in Saint Louis. Uh got the car running real good, um,
running very consistent and, um, it feels good to be the points leader. We'll see if we can, uh, do good this weekend. Hang on to that.
Freddie feeds his 519 cubic inch big block with blown alcohol and helps harness it with a clutch assisted three speed linko once I leave and it comes to where my shift light comes on. Hit this,
hit this button here
when the second light comes on, hit that one
and uh, about six seconds later, almost seven seconds later
that
reach up here and get the old parachute level.
Here's a new outlaw on the loose in this NSE A series Mark burns and his very street 65 Malibu
Mark's got a 526 cube Olds engine in his Chevelle that makes a more than ample 2500 horses. I think we are to run some 67.
I hope
if we're lucky,
we depend on the track and depend on us.
Remember those dot Tires we showed you. Well, they're the biggest barrier to planning the power as Mark discovered on his first trip down the track with a pair.
The baddest outlaw of qualifying day was New York City Bandit, Mark
d'antoni who nailed a 670 at 207 miles an hour. We were definitely happy with the 670
we, uh the weather change here was like the air was really bad. It was 3300 ft and the humidity was up there.
So we were happy to run anything better than an 80. We didn't expect to go but an 89 in the first round, we went an 81. Meanwhile, the Chevy shoe box is part of a new class called Nostalgia Pro Street. Now, this thing is 3600 pounds of real steel with its own special chapter in drag racing history.
Big named Bertha. This 55 was the first back half car to run in the sevens a few decades ago. She's still classy and loaded with a aluminum big block for this new class.
Of course, we can stand the weight hit. So we're running the dual four barrels on a cast tunnel ram. You're not allowed to run any sheet metal intakes, only cast intakes one stage in Nitrous.
But the top qualifying never lift. Nostalgia. Pro Streeter would be John Cervantes
and his 66 Chevelle who also set a mile per hour record in the process.
Well, on Sunday's elimination day though, John had higher hopes. We got the mile per hour record right now. We're gonna get the ET record today
and we're gonna try like that
as a warm up for the finals. These junior drag racing stars of tomorrow took to the staging lanes including Lizzie Pat
Missy's daughter in her own pint sized spinach can.
But now here we go with finals in this NSC A Southern shootout
in Nostalgia Pro Street. John Cervantes
runs at 809 going home with three victories in a row.
We set the ET record. We set the mile per hour record. We won the event.
It's just been one heck of a weekend for, uh,
so slow has been,
I got the seat with
the
Wall Street. Finals were pit d'antoni against who else. But Bass Freddie, who was fast at the tree but got caught by the nitrous nudged Monte Carlo
and I saw him next to me my whole way down. Once we pulled 4th and 50 I started to pull away, but it was a race the whole way down the track
then Pro Street. And yes, it was green versus green genteel against Bey
and the old Pro came through with a winning 686 against Tony's 689.
We got a good attitude for this year. I mean we just wanna come out and not lose around, take it one round at a time and try not to lose around at all, you know, whatever it is that working man, you got a street going. Yeah, we got a good team and good my kids help everybody else. What was the most fun you racing or seeing him win?
See
him
and now hot parts brought to you by car parts.com. Everything for your car, truck van or SUV.
Hey, crate engines aren't just for cars anymore. Now, you can get them for Harley's too
available in both 88 and 100 cubic inch versions. This rev tech engine from custom chrome is the perfect replacement for your Evo engine.
Now, the head gaskets and base gaskets could have been replaced with O rings for a leak proof seal and cooling is improved too with more thin contact area.
Now down here
you're gonna find a removable sump that lets you inspect that bottom end. And of course, that's where you're gonna find these one piece flywheel halves and shafts that are forged from 4340 steel. Now, the prices of steel too starting at about five grand.
Hey, you guys with twin cam Harley's gonna enjoy more horsepower with Super Traps 2 to 1 exhaust system
designed to extract maximum performance from the new engine design.
It features oversized pipes feeding into a common collector.
Now, back here, the exhaust has the stackable disk that you can tune for desired power and sound.
Sound good. Well, how does this sound? Prices start at under 600 bucks
when it's time to plant all that power? Well, here's a new tire from Mickey Thompson
that's designed just for dot Tire shoot out competition. Now
it's a 17 inch Z rated radio with a soft sticky compound and a wide footprint to really help you plant the power on the strip, plus it handles well on the street too.
Now, the word on the street is one of these is gonna set you back about 200 bucks. All right. Well, it's time for us to hit the street, but not before a sample of next week's show.
We'll do a driveway cam swap on Chuck Chevelle wagon and while we're at it we'll install a new timing chain,
valve train components and carburetor. Then we'll test these power pieces on our
dyno
Jet.
We'll start to work on my Mustang project car with a new rack and pinion kit
and take you to Ontario for some down and dirty dragster action
in our I hr a race of the week.
And remember high performance fun is what this show is all about. Well, I guess it's time for a putt. Hey, Joe, what are you gonna ride
that purple monster over there? Uh, no, no. Well, what about the drag bike. Are you kidding? Well, that only leaves one. That's that red demon back there. Nope. Nope, none of the above. In fact, uh check out my board and stroke hot rod. Wizard
man. I am born to be mild

we, uh the weather change here was like the air was really bad.
