THIS IS A 1970 WITH ALL THE RIGHT BAIT ON THE OUTSIDE - THE HOCKEY STICK STRIPE, FATFORTHETIME F-60 GOODYEAR RUBBER, AND THOSE UNMISTAKABLE GILLS ON THE ROCKER PANEL. BUT, THE REAL CATCH WAS UNDER THE HOOD AND UNDER THIS MASSIVE SHAKER SCOOP. I'M TALKING ABOUT THE 426 HEMI. THIS ONE, BY THE WAY, WAS "CAUGHT" BY DEWEY GREEN IN ALABASTER, ALABAMA.

(CHUCK)>> THE HEMI MADE ITS MARKS FROM THE CRUISING CIRCUITS AROUND THE COUNTRY TO THE HIGHBANKS OF NASCAR. (CHUCK)>> NOW, THAT'S IMPRESSIVE. I TELL YA' WHAT, THE BASIS FOR THIS BUILDUP IS AN INDYMAXX ALL ALUMINUM CYLINDER BLOCK. NOW, STOP AND THINK ABOUT IT FOR JUST A LITTLE BIT. THAT'S OVER 900 HORSEPOWER FROM AN ENGINE THAT DOESN'T WEIGH A WHOLE LOT MORE THAN A SMALL BLOCK CHEVY.

(JOE)>> THE BOTTOM END BEGINS WITH THIS INDY CALLIE'S CRANK. IT'S A FORTYTHREE FORTY PIECE THAT'S BEEN TRIPLE HEAT TREATED AND STRESS RELIEVED. NOW, THE STROKE ON THIS THING IS FOUR AND ONEHALF INCHES.

(CHUCK)>> THAT BIG CRANK IS GONNA HANG A SET OF THESE BILL MILLER ALLALUMINUM RODS AND A SET OF THESE FOUR AND ONEHALF INCH BORE WEISCO PISTONS THAT HAVE BEEN FITTED WITH SPEEDPRO RINGS.

(JOE)>> NOW, BEFORE WE BOLT UP THIS BOTTOM END, THIS HEMI'S A UNIQUE ANIMAL. THE FIRST THING WE HAVE TO DO IS CHECK OUR VALVE TO VALVE CLEARANCE.

(CHUCK)>> WELL I'VE GOT THE CAM SHAFT.

WITH THE CYLINDER HEAD BOLTED ON AND THE VALVES IN THE OVERLAP POSITION, INSERT THE FEELER GAUGE FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE BORE AND CHECK FOR A MINIMUM OF .030 BETWEEN THE VALVES. HERE'S A NEAT FEATURE ABOUT THE INDY LEGEND HEMI HEAD. THE EXHAUST VALVE HAS BEEN ROTATED TWO DEGREES AWAY FROM THE INTAKE. NOW THAT LETS US USE A LARGER INTAKE VALVE AND INCREASES THE CLEARANCE BETWEEN 'EM.

(JOE)>> NOW, THAT WE'VE CHECKED OUR VALVE CLEARANCE, WE CAN START BUILDING THIS BOTTOM END STARTING WITH OUR MAIN BEARINGS. NOW THESE FEDERAL MOGULS ARE NARROWER THAN STOCK WITH A CHAMFERED EDGE TO MATCH THE SPECIAL RADIUS ON OUR CRANK FILLET. AFTER WE POP 'EM IN, WE'LL MAKE SURE WE USE LOTS OF THIS ASSEMBLY LUBE.

(CHUCK)>> BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THIS BLOCK ONLY WEIGHS 133 POUNDS, AND 30 POUNDS OF THAT ARE THESE STEEL BILLET MAIN CAPS. NOW, THIS BOTTOM END IS TRULY BULLET PROOF. ALL FIVE CAPS ARE CROSSBOLTED.

MAKE SURE YOU TORQUE THE CENTER BOLTS FIRST TO 80 FOOT POUNDS.

AND, FINISH UP WITH THE SIDE BOLTS AT 70 FOOT POUNDS.

(JOE)>> THESE BME RODS ARE MADE FROM A CUSTOM AEROSPACE ALLOY. THE ALUMINUM HAS BEEN FORGED UNDER EXTREME PRESSURE FOR SUPERIOR GRAIN FLOW. AND, THEY'VE BEEN POLISHED TO REDUCE THE CHANCES OF STRESS RISERS. NOW, THEY USED TO CALL OLD HEMI PISTONS BRICK HOUSES BECAUSE THE UNDERNEATH WAS PRETTY SOLID. THESE WEISCOS ARE MADE FROM A DEDICATED HEMI DIE THAT ELIMINATES MOST OF THAT EXTRA WEIGHT AND THE NEED FOR ANY INTERNAL MILLING.

(CHUCK)>> WITH THE NUMBER ONE PISTON INSTALLED, NOW WE CAN SET UP OUR MILODON GEAR DRIVE. NOW, UNLIKE OTHER CAM DRIVES WHERE YOU SIMPLY HAVE TO LINE UP TWO DOTS TO INSTALL THE CAM STRAIGHT UP, HERE WE FIRST HAVE TO ESTABLISH THAT DOT LOCATION. TO DO THIS, DROP IN THE LIFTERS THAT'LL BE USED IN THE ENGINE. THEN THE DIAL INDICATOR TO MEASURE CAM LIFT. INSTALL THE DEGREE WHEEL AND THE POINTER. AND AFTER BRINGING THE NUMBER ONE PISTON TO TOP DEAD CENTER, LINE UP THE POINTER ON THE WHEEL. THE CAM CARD TELLS US THE INTAKE OPENS AT 32 DEGREES AT .050 CAM LIFT. BY TURNING THE CRANK TO 32 DEGREES, AND ROTATING THE CAM TO .050 LIFT, YOU CAN SLIDE THE CAM GEAR ON, MAKE YOUR MARKS, AND THAT'LL ALLOW US TO INSTALL THE CAM STRAIGHT UP. THEN, WE CAN INSTALL THE OTHER SEVEN PISTONS AND THE CAM COVER. USING A FEELER GAUGE TO MAINTAIN CAP ALIGNMENT, TORQUE THE ROD BOLTS TO 75 FOOT POUNDS AND MAKE SURE YOU USE PLENTY OF OIL SO YOU GET AN ACCURATE TORQUE READING.

(JOE)>> WE'RE GONNA BUTTON UP OUR BOTTOM END WITH THIS WET SUMP OIL PAN FROM CHARLIE'S. NOW, THIS THING'S GOT A UNIQUE FEATURE INSIDE HERE, A PICKUP THAT ACTUALLY SWINGS. THIS IS HOW IT WORKS, 'COURSE THE SCREENS ON THE BOTTOM HERE. WHEN YOU ACCELERATE IT SWINGS BACK, WHEN YOU DECELERATE IT SWINGS FORWARD. 'COURSE THAT WAY, IT STAYS SUBMERGED IN OIL ALL THE TIME. NOW INDY HAS ELIMINATED MOST OF THE STANDARD PAN FLANGE THAT USED TO BE HERE. BY OPENING IT UP, THERE'S LESS OIL BOUNCING AROUND IN THE PAN AND WRAPPING ITSELF AROUND THE CRANK. NOW THAT'S GOOD FOR 15 TO 20 HORSEPOWER. THIS PAN DOESN'T USE A GASKET. INSTEAD WE'RE GONNA USE SOME RTV. LET ME SHOW YOU A TIP. FOR A NEATER JOB, WE JUST TRACE AROUND THE PAN WITH A MARKER. THEN, APPLY THE RTV INSIDE THE MARK. WELL, THAT'S IT FOR THE BOTTOM END OF OUR HEMI. WE'LL CALCULATE THE COMPRESSION RATIO AND FINISH THE TOP END AFTER THIS. (CHUCK)>> THE HEMI PISTON HAS A HUGH DOME ON IT, BUT IT FITS THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER PERFECTLY. NOW, TO CALCULATE OUR COMPRESSION RATIO, WE NEED TO MOVE THE PISTON ONE INCH DOWN IN THE HOLE. THEN WE'LL CAP IT WITH A PLEXIGLASS PLATE. AND, FILL IT WITH MINERAL SPIRITS. NOW, YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE TO ELIMINATE ALL YOUR AIR BUBBLES. NOW IT'S TIME FOR THE MATH. THE VOLUME OF A FOUR AND A HALF INCH BORE, ONE INCH DEEP IS 260 CC'S. IT TOOK 170 WITH THE PISTON IN PLACE, SO OUR DOME VOLUME IS 90. NOW, WE MEASURED OUR COMBUSTION CHAMBER VOLUME AT 165 CC'S, AND WHEN YOU SUBTRACT THE DOME VOLUME AND ADD 10.9 HEAD GASKET VOLUME, OUR COMBUSTION VOLUME IS 85.9. NOW, JUST PLUG THAT NUMBER INTO A STANDARD COMPRESSION RATIO FORMULA, AND OUR HEMI'S GOT A 14.6 SQUEEZE FACTOR.

(JOE)>> WELL NEXT COME THE COMP CAMS ROLLER LIFTERS. 'COURSE THEY'RE RIDING ON ONE OF THEIR CAMS THAT'S BEEN GROUND TO INDY SPECS.

(CHUCK)>> THE VALLEY COVER'S NEXT AND HERE'S A REAL NEAT FEATURE. THIS CENTER PART ACTUALLY COMES OUT SO WE CAN GET AT THE HEAD BOLTS AND THE LIFTERS LATER ON IF WE NEED TO.

(JOE)>> THE LEGEND HEMI HEADS HAVE IMPROVEMENT OVER ITS PREDECESSORS WITH A .350 LONGER INTAKE VALVE FROM MANLEY THAT'S A NAILHEAD DESIGN COMPARED TO THIS TULIP HEAD. NOW IT'S ALSO 2.4 COMPARED TO 2.25 INCHES ON THE STOCKER. NOW, THAT ALLOWS FOR A RAISED INTAKE PORT AND SHORT SIDE TURN FOR MORE PORT VELOCITY AND INCREASED VOLUME. 'COURSE THE EXHAUST PORT IS ALSO RAISED FOR THE SAME REASON.

(CHUCK)>> MAN, THAT'S GREAT. NOW, ON THE BENCH THESE THINGS FLOWED 490 CFM ON THE INTAKE SIDE AND 335 ON THE EXHAUST.

(CHUCK)>> IT REALLY IS. NOW, LET ME SHOW YOU SOMETHING. THIS IS A STOCK HEMI ROCKER STAND. ON THE LEGEND HEAD, THEY'VE BEEN CAST RIGHT IN FOR ADDITIONAL STRENGTH. OF COURSE, USING A LONGER VALVE CREATES A GEOMETRY PROBLEM AND THE WAY THAT'S BEEN ADDRESSED IS WITH A PAIR OF ADJUSTABLE SHAFTS THAT CAN BE SHIMMED INDEPENDENTLY. THEN, THE HEAD IS FINISHED OFF WITH A SET OF COMP CAMS' PACALLOY SPRINGS, LOCKS, AND RETAINERS.

(JOE)>> THE HEADS ARE ORINGED AND MATCH THIS RECEIVER GROOVE HERE ON THE BLOCK. 'COURSE THEY WORK TOGETHER WITH THIS COPPER HEAD GASKET WE GOT FROM CLARK. NOW, HERE'S A LITTLE TIP FOR YA'. USE SOME RTV AROUND THE WATER AND OIL PASSAGES TO PREVENT ANY LEAKS.

(CHUCK)>> NOW, REMEMBER. WE'RE RUNNING ALMOST 15 TO ONE COMPRESSION HERE, SO WE'VE STUDDED THE BLOCK WITH ARP STUDS. THAT WAY WE GET BETTER CLAMPING AND TRUER TORQUE READINGS.

(JOE)>> WITH OUR INDY STAINLESS ROCKERS IN PLACE, WE PUSH ON THE LASH CAPS, DROP IN OUR PUSH RODS, AND, FINALLY LASH THE VALVES.

(CHUCK)>> WELL THAT ABOUT DOES IT OVER HERE, 70 FOOT POUNDS ON THOSE HEAD BOLTS. WELL, SINCE WE'RE BUILDING ESSENTIALLY A SUPER CLASS OR BRACKET STYLE MOTOR, WE'RE GONNA GO AHEAD WITH THIS SINGLE FOUR BARREL, SINGLE PLANE SETUP. NOW, THIS ONE'S BEEN FULLY- PORTED AND POLISHED AND IT'S GOT TWO INCHES OF SPACERS HERE. NOW, THAT'S GONNA HELP US BUILD PLENUM VOLUME WHICH IS REAL CRITICAL TO FEED A 572 ENGINE LIKE OURS, ESPECIALLY IF YOU WANT MAXIMUM POWER. NOW, IT'S HELD IN PLACE WITH THESE LITTLE QUARTERINCH BOLTS HERE. YOU'RE GONNA HAVE TO BE REAL CAREFUL NOT TO OVERTIGHTEN 'EM. WE'RE TALKING 72 INCHPOUNDS HERE.
