NOW TODAY WE'RE GONNA TALK ABOUT ONE SPECIFIC TYPE OF WELDING, AND THAT IS TIG WELDING. I'LL SHOW YOU DIFFERENT MACHINES, HOW TO SET THEM UP CORRECTLY, DIFFERENT OPTIONS WHEN IT COMES TO TORCHES, AS WELL AS SOME NEW TECHNOLOGY. TIG WELDING FALLS UNDERNEATH THE UMBRELLA OF SHIELD METAL ARC WELDING. AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THE FIRST TIG WELDERS, IT WAS JUST AN ATTACHMENT THAT YOU ADDED TO AN OLD SCHOOL STICK WELDER. NOT TOO LONG AGO, MILLER EMBRACED INVERTER TECHNOLOGY AND BASICALLY CHANGED THE SIZE OF TIG WELDERS FOREVER. THEY COMBINE A SMALL COMPUTER WITH A TRADITIONAL TIG WELDER, AND CREATED THE DYNASTY SERIES OF WELDING MACHINES. NOW IT'S EVERYTHING THE LARGER TIG WELDER IS. IT'S A DEDICATED TIG MACHINE AS WELL AS A DEDICATED ARCH WELDER. BUT BECAUSE OF THE CIRCUIT BOARD AND COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY, THE ADJUSTMENTS YOU CAN MAKE TO YOUR WELD PATTERN ARE VIRTUALLY ENDLESS. NOW THIS IS A GREAT MACHINE FOR A PROFESSIONAL WELDER AND FABRICATOR. YOU'D THINK IT WOULD BE A GOOD MACHINE FOR THE HOME USER BECAUSE IT'S INCREDIBLY LIGHT AND SMALL. THE DOWNFALL IS THE PRICE IS A LITTLE BIT OUT OF REACH. FULLY DRESSED, READY TO WELD'S GONNA COST YOU $3,500 DOLLARS. PLUS ALL THESE ADJUSTMENTS CAN SEND THE NOVICE WELDER A LITTLE BIT OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE. SO MILLER DECIDED TO COME OUT WITH ANOTHER TIG WELDER. THIS IS THE DIVERSION 165. THEY TOOK SOME OF THE TECHNOLOGY OF THE DYNASTY TO MAKE THE WELDER SMALL AND LIGHT, BUT MADE IT VERY SIMPLE TO OPERATE WITH A SIMPLE ONE KNOB OPERATION AND A SELECTOR SWITCH BASED ON WHAT YOU'RE WELDING. THE NICE THING IS IT'S INCREDIBLY CHEAP. JUST ABOUT $1,200 TO $1,300 BUCKS OUT THE DOOR READY TO WELD, MAKING THIS A GREAT WELDER FOR THE DO IT YOURSELF TIG WELDER. NO MATTER WHICH TIG WELDER YOU CHOOSE TO PUT INTO YOUR SHOP, THE SETUP AND BASIC OPERATION IS GONNA BE THE SAME. JUST LIKE ALL ELECTRIC WELDERS, YOU NEED A GROUND CLAMP TO COMPLETE THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT. YOU HAVE TO ATTACH IT RIGHT TO THE ITEM YOU'RE GONNA BE WELDING, OR IF YOU HAVE AN ALL STEEL BENCH LIKE WE HAVE HERE YOU CAN SIMPLY CLAMP IT ON TO THE SIDE OF THE BENCH. NOW LIKE AN ARC WELDER, A TIG WELDER USES AN ELECTRICAL ARC TO MELT THE METAL THAT YOU'RE WELDING, BUT HOW THAT ARC IS DELIVERED IS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT. THE ELECTRICITY TRAVELS DOWN TO THE TIG TORCH AND IS THEN INTRODUCED ONTO A PIECE OF SHARPENED TUNGSTEN STEEL. NOW THE ARC THAT JUMPS FROM THE TUNGSTEN STEEL DOWN TO THE WORK PIECE IS WHAT MELTS THE METAL AND CREATES THE WELD. ALSO INSIDE THE TIG TORCH IS A SMALL COLET WITH HOLES IN IT. THE ARGON SHIELDING GAS COMES OUT OF THOSE HOLES AND IS DIRECTED TOWARDS THE MOLTEN PUDDLE TO PROTECT IT WHILE YOU'RE WELDING WITH THIS SMALL NOZZLE BODY. NOW UNLIKE AN ARC WELDER, THE TUNGSTEN ITSELF IS NOT CONSUMED DURING THE ARC WELDING PROCESS. AND ALSO UNLIKE AN ARC WELDER, IT IS NOT LIVE IN ANY WAY. THERE'S NO ELECTRICITY TRAVELING DOWN TO THE TORCH HEAD UNTIL YOU INTRODUCE THE ELECTRICITY BY ENGAGING THE FOOT CONTROL AND TURNING THE WELDER ON. NOW USING A TIG WELDER TAKES SOME TIME AND PRACTICE. YOU'RE GONNA WANNA SPEND A LOT OF TIME JUST ON A BENCH WITH SOME PIECES OF STEEL PRACTICING YOUR WELD. WITH THE TORCH HELD PERPENDICULAR TO THE PIECE YOU'RE GONNA WELD, STRIKE AN ARC AND CREATE A SMALL MOLTEN PUDDLE. WITH YOUR FREE HAND, ADD THE FILLER MATERIAL INTO THE MOLTEN PUDDLE. THEN SLOWLY MOVE DOWN THE STEEL TO CREATE A BEAD.

(IAN)>> TODAY WE'RE TALKING ABOUT TIG WELDING. YOU'VE ALREADY HAD A GOOD LOOK AT A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF MACHINES, HOW TO SET THEM UP, AND SOME BASIC WELDING PROCESSES, BUT THERE'S A MISUNDERSTANDING WHEN YOU'RE COMPARING TIG WELDING TO OTHER FORMS OF WELDING. IT'S NOT NECESSARILY BETTER OR STRONGER THAN MIG OR ARC WELDING, IT'S JUST MORE PRECISE AND MORE VERSATILE. NOW ALL THAT PRECISION AND VERSATILITY IS DUE TO THE ABILITY TO SWAP OUT THE TUNGSTEN THAT IS INSIDE THE TORCH. NOW WHEN WE'RE TALKING ABOUT OFF ROAD FABRICATION, WE'RE DEALING WITH THREE MAIN TYPES OF TUNGSTEN. THERE'S TWO PERCENT RED THORIATED TUNGSTEN, GREEN 100 PERCENT PURE TUNGSTEN, AND ORANGE TWO PERCENT CERIATED. GREEN TUNGSTEN IS 99.5 PERCENT TUNGSTEN, AND IS USED MAINLY FOR A/C OR ALUMINUM WELDING. WHEN HEATED, IT FORMS A CLEAN, BALD TIP THAT PROVIDES VERY GOOD ARC STABILITY. RED TUNGSTEN MUST BE SHARPENED TO A TIP BEFORE WELDING. IT CONTAINS 97 PERCENT TUNGSTEN AND TWO PERCENT THORIUM, AND IS USED MAINLY FOR D/C OR CARBON STEEL WELDING. THORIUM IMPROVES THE ARC STARTS AND OPERATES MUCH LOWER THAN IT'S MELTING POINT, AND THEREFORE THE TUNGSTEN HAS A GOOD LIFE SPAN. ORANGE CERIATED TUNGSTEN, LIKE THE RED, MUST BE SHARPENED IN ORDER TO WELD, BUT IT CAN BE USED FOR BOTH D/C AND SOME A/C ALUMINUM WELDING PROCESSES IF YOU'RE USING AN INVERTER STYLE TIG MACHINE LIKE A DYNASTY. NO MATTER WHAT COLOR THE TUNGSTEN IS, IT MUST BE PROTECTED WHILE IT COOLS. NOW THIS IS THE JOB OF THE POST FLOW FEATURE OF THE TIG MACHINE. WHEN YOU'RE FINISHED WELDING AND TURN OFF THE ARC, THE GAS WILL CONTINUE TO FLOW OUT OF THE NOZZLE. HOLD THE TORCH STEADY AND ALLOW IT TO PROTECT NOT ONLY THE TUNGSTEN, BUT THE COOLING WELD AT THE SAME TIME. WHEN ALUMINUM WELDING WITH THE CERIATED TUNGSTEN, IT IS SHARPENED TO A POINT JUST LIKE YOU WOULD IF YOU'RE WELDING STEEL. THIS CREATES A MORE FOCUSED ARC ON THE ALUMINUM, AND ALLOWS FOR MORE CONTROL OVER THE MOLTEN PUDDLE. THE COLOR OF THE TUNGSTEN IS NOT THE ONLY VARIABLE. IT CHANGES IN SIZE AS WELL, AND YOU WANT TO MATCH THE SIZE OF YOUR TUNGSTEN AS CLOSE TO THE THICKNESS OF THE MATERIAL THAT YOU'RE GONNA BE WELDING. IF YOU'RE WORKING WITH THIN SHEET METAL, YOU'RE GONNA STEP DOWN TO THIS 040 TUNGSTEN, WHICH IS JUST A LITTLE BIGGER THAN MIG WELDING WIRE. IF YOU'RE WELDING SOMETHING THICK LIKE A BRACKET ONTO AN AXLE HOUSING, STEP UP TO THE THREE 32ND, WHICH IS JUST A STEP UNDER AN EIGHTH OF AN INCH. BUT WHEN YOU CHANGE THAT TUNGSTEN OUT, YOU DO NEED TO DISASSEMBLE THE TORCH AND SWAP OUT THE COLET THAT LOCKS THE TUNGSTEN IN PLACE. YOU'LL ALSO WANT TO STEP DOWN TO A SMALLER NOZZLE THAT'LL ALLOW THE PROTECTIVE SHIELDING GAS TO BE CLOSER TO THE TIP OF THE TUNGSTEN. AND WITH THESE DIFFERENT SIZE TUNGSTENS COMES DIFFERENT SHARPENING TECHNIQUES. THE LENGTH OF A SHARPENED TIP MUST BE TWO TIMES THE WIDTH OF THE TUNGSTEN AND SHARPENED LENGTH WISE ALONG THE GRAIN. YOU HAVE TO DO THIS ON A DEDICATED GRINDING STONE ONLY USED FOR SHARPENING TUNGSTEN OR YOU CAN CONTAMINATE YOUR WELDING ROD. IF YOU PLAN TO DO A LOT OF TIG WELDING, YOU REALLY WANT TO PICK YOURSELF UP ONE OF THESE. NOW THIS IS A PORTABLE HAND HELD TUNGSTEN GRINDER THAT WE GOT FROM WELD CRAFT. ON THE TOP IS A JIG THAT WILL HOLD THE TUNGSTEN AT DIFFERENT ANGLES, AND THE SHALLOWER ANGLE WORKS WELL ON LOW AMPERAGE APPLICATIONS. IT HAS HOLES THAT WILL FIT ALL THE DIFFERENT SIZES OF TUNGSTEN, AND ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS SLIDE IT IN, TURN IT ON, MOVE THE TUNGSTEN, AND YOU'LL END UP WITH A PERFECTLY SHARPENED TIP EVERY SINGLE TIME. NOW THERE IS ONE WARNING WHEN DEALING WITH TUNGSTEN. THORIUM IS A KNOWN CARCINOGEN. SO IF YOU'RE GONNA DO A LOT OF THE GRINDING OF THE RED TUNGSTEN, MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA. AND THAT'S JUST ANOTHER REASON WHY A LOT OF US ARE SWITCHING OVER TO THE ORANGE CERIATED.

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THE MACHINE YOU NEED TO BUY TO WELD AND YOU CAN TELL THAT THINGS HAVE CHANGED FROM THE OLD DAYS WHEN YOU WERE BASICALLY HOOKING UP A GIANT ARC WELDER. BUT ONE FEATURE THAT HAS REALLY COME ON THE SCENE LATELY IS PULSE WELDING. NOW YOU CAN'T GET A PULSE FEATURE ON A SMALL AT HOME MACHINE LIKE THIS DIVERSION. BUT TRUST ME, IF YOUR POCKET BOOK CAN AFFORD IT, IT'S DEFINITELY WORTH IT TO STEP UP TO ONE OF THE TWO INDUSTRIAL SIZE MACHINES JUST TO GET THAT FEATURE. NOW THE PULSE FEATURE DOES EXACTLY LIKE IT SOUNDS. IT BASICALLY TURNS THE WELDING ARC ON AND OFF AND ALLOWS IT TO PULSE AS YOU WELD. NOW THIS DEFINITELY COMES IN HANDY WHEN YOU'RE WELDING THINNER MATERIAL. WITH THE PULSE FEATURE ENGAGED, THE WELDER ACTUALLY TURNS THE ARC ON AND OFF AS YOU WELD. BUT CHROMOLY IS NOTORIOUS FOR SUCKING UP THAT HEAT AND SPREADING THE HEAT EFFECTIVE ZONE ALL DOWN THE TUBE. THAT MAKES IT BRITTLE AND IT CAN CRACK LATER RIGHT BESIDE THE WELD. SO IF YOU NOTICE THAT THE HEAT EFFECTIVE ZONE IS STARTING TO GET A LITTLE BIT LARGER THAN YOU LIKE, INSTEAD OF PULLING YOUR PEAK VOLTAGE DOWN, WHICH COULD LIMIT THE STRENGTH OF YOUR WELD, YOU GO INTO THE MACHINE AND SIMPLY DIAL DOWN THE BACKGROUND VOLTAGE. THAT WILL PULL SOME OF THE HEAT OUT OF THE WELD BUT NOT EFFECT THE STRENGTH OF THE WELD BECAUSE YOU'RE STILL OPERATING AT THE MAXIMUM AMPERAGE, GIVING IT THE HEAT THAT IT NEEDS. NOW THAT'S JUST ONE MORE BENEFIT TO HAVING THE INVERTER TECHNOLOGY. THERE ARE SOME DEFINITELY SAFETY AND SETUP DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TIG WELDING AND ANY OTHER FORM OF WELDING. NOW THE NICE THING ABOUT TIG WELDING IS THERE'S NOT A LOT OF SPATTER OR SPARKS FLYING THROUGH THE AIR. SO THE SAFETY EQUIPMENT YOU NEED IS A LOT LIGHTER. NOW THE REASON THEY'RE MADE SO THIN IS SO YOU CAN FEEL THE FILLER MATERIAL IN BETWEEN YOUR FINGERS AS YOU WELD. NOW WHEN IT COMES TO THE HELMET, IT'S A TYPICAL WELDING HELMET, BUT I LIKE TO GET AS BIG OF A VIEWING WINDOW AS A POSSIBLY CAN IN CASE YOU'RE WELDING OUT OF POSITION. AND TIG WELDING TENDS TO BE A LITTLE BIT BRIGHTER THAN MIG WELDING. SO I TURN THE SHADE ON THE HELMET DOWN TO ABOUT A NUMBER 11 TO KEEP MY EYES FROM GETTING TIRED. NOW WHEN IT COMES TO WELD JOINT PREP, THIS IS WHERE TIG WELDING COMPLETELY CHANGES. SEE TUBING IS ALWAYS SHIPPED WITH A RUST PROOF COATING ON THE OUTSIDE, BASICALLY AN OILED COATING. ALL THAT NEEDS TO BE REMOVED BEFORE YOU CAN DO ANY WELDING. YOU NEED TO GET IN HERE AND GRIND ALL OF THAT OFF OR IT WILL CONTAMINATE BOTH THE WELD AND THE FILLER MATERIAL AND THE TUNGSTEN AS YOU WELD UP THAT JOINT. A GOOD FLAP WHEEL ON A FOUR AND A HALF INCH ANGLE GRINDER IS GONNA BECOME YOUR BEST FRIEND.

IT'S REALLY ONLY DESIGNED FOR GUYS WHO WELD A LONG TIME DURING THE DAY, AND IT ALLOWS YOU TO EXTEND THE DUTY CYCLE OF THE WELDER. BUT JUST A FEW HUNDRED DOLLARS YOU CAN MAKE YOUR TIG WELDING A LITTLE BIT BETTER BY CHANGING OUT YOUR TORCH. WHEN YOU BUY A TIG WELDER, THIS IS MORE THAN LIKELY GONNA BE THE TORCH THAT COMES WITH IT. IT'S A FIXED HEAD TORCH WITH A LONG BACK CAP DESIGNED TO FIT A FULL LENGTH PIECE OF TUNGSTEN. THE NOZZLE HAS A LARGE OPENING ON THE END AND IT'S GREAT FOR GENERAL PURPOSE WELDING. BUT WHEN IT COMES TO SPECIALIZED WELDING, YOU'RE GONNA WANNA UPGRADE IT. NOW THIS IS WHAT I LIKE TO USE WHEN TIG WELDING. I TAKE THE TORCH, SWAP OUT THE LONG BACK CAP FOR ONE OF THESE SHORT ONES. NO MATTER WHAT COLOR THE TUNGSTEN IS, IT MUST BE PROTECTED WHILE IT COOLS. NOW THIS IS THE JOB OF THE POST FLOW FEATURE OF THE TIG MACHINE. WHEN YOU'RE FINISHED WELDING AND TURN OFF THE ARC, THE GAS WILL CONTINUE TO FLOW OUT OF THE NOZZLE. IF YOU'RE WORKING WITH THIN SHEET METAL, YOU'RE GONNA STEP DOWN TO THIS 040 TUNGSTEN, WHICH IS JUST A LITTLE BIGGER THAN MIG WELDING WIRE. IF YOU'RE WELDING SOMETHING THICK LIKE A BRACKET ONTO AN AXLE HOUSING, STEP UP TO THE THREE 32ND, WHICH IS JUST A STEP UNDER AN EIGHTH OF AN INCH. BUT WHEN YOU CHANGE THAT TUNGSTEN OUT, YOU DO NEED TO DISASSEMBLE THE TORCH AND SWAP OUT THE COLET THAT LOCKS THE TUNGSTEN IN PLACE. YOU'LL ALSO WANT TO STEP DOWN TO A SMALLER NOZZLE THAT'LL ALLOW THE PROTECTIVE SHIELDING GAS TO BE CLOSER TO THE TIP OF THE TUNGSTEN.
