Welcome to trucks. You know, one thing's for sure, everybody wants more power out of their truck, whether it's got a gasoline engine or diesel engine, both have a lot of potential. So the first thing I'm gonna work on today is a brand new Chevy
Duramax Duley
and we're gonna tweak on it and make it even better than it is already.
Now, obviously, this is not a stock truck.
This has already been highly modified with custom paint
hood grill and bumper
because this is destined for the S
A show in Las Vegas. And it's our job to make it run as good as it looks. Now in the past, you've seen me do some pretty wild things with diesels
and that is great. These things make incredible power, but the reality is
nobody really goes out and buys a diesel to go drag racing with it. No, these are big heavy expensive trucks.
A person buys a diesel because they want the power to go tow and haul heavy loads
and they want something that's gonna last a long time. Two or 300,000 miles. So today I'm
gonna show you how to get more power to handle those heavy loads, not destroy the engine
and use parts that are really easy to put on so easy that your dog could help you do it.
Yeah, I'm talking to you.
All right. The first thing we need is some parts. So we made a call to bully dog technologies, got a whole bunch of stuff to help us meet our goal. Now, the first thing we're gonna put on
is what they call the rapid flow air induction system. Now, this will get us a lot better air flow going into that engine. The best part is
to put it on, takes a couple of screwdrivers
and a wrench
first
remove the mass airflow sensor,
followed by this whole stock air box.
Now just install the new air box in the stock location. What do you think of this smokes? Yeah, it fits right in here. Look at this.
Yeah, see there
then reinstall the stock mass airflow sensor and that is it. You are done.
Now, you've got a nice cool blast of air coming in through the grill and feeding that engine or in the case of this truck, we've got a special hood on it from Sun Coast creations has dual functional scoops.
The air comes through this chamber into the box and
even more air into the engine.
This is cool.
Now most people realize that getting more air into your engine is one way to get more power out of a diesel but the area that you're gonna see the biggest change is in tweaking your computer and your electronics.
So that's what we're gonna do next. Now, this is called the Power Pup. Now, this is a programmer that allows you to custom tune your engine to give you more power and performance.
And all you have to do is plug it into the diagnostic port here in the cab
and start punching buttons.
This will allow you to adjust for tire size
axle ratio,
remove your speed limiter,
check and remove trouble codes. You know all that cool stuff and all you have to do is read the screen and punch the buttons.
Now we're gonna set this on engine tune setting number one because that is specifically for towing
there just picked up 50 extra horsepower,
ok? 50 horsepower is nice but say you're towing a heavy load and
you hit a hill and all of a sudden,
ah you need more power. What are you gonna do?
Well, the solution is to add this bully dog
dyno
dominator to the programmer.
Now, this is a performance module that gives you three different power settings
and you can change it as you drive down the road. Now, this set on level three added to the programmer will give you 100 and 50 horsepower
and 320 ft pounds of torque
and your heavy trailer just got a lot lighter. And if you think the programmer was easy to put in.
You wait to see this go in.
All right, these two big plugs here in the wiring harness are what we're after
and all you have to do is unplug them
and plug in the dyno
Dominator. Now, if you've never done this before, you can just relax
because these plugs only go where they're supposed to go. So it is impossible to mix them up and plug them into the wrong place.
Next, you're ready to mount the module. Now, the best place for this is right here on this fuse box cover to keep it away from the heat and moisture.
And the supply piece of Velcro
is all it takes to hold it in place.
Now, any time you add this kind of power,
well, you also add the possibility of maybe damaging your engine and transmission.
So you need to add some insurance to protect your rig
and keep you informed of what's going on. And that is what this outlook monitor is for.
Now, this not only has digital gauge readouts for your engine functions,
but it will also automatically Deuel the engine if temperatures get too high.
So you don't destroy anything.
The best part is this will work with anybody's aftermarket performance parts, not just bully dogs. So if you've already put some parts on your truck,
this can help you protect them, putting it in. Very simple. Here's how it goes.
You need to wake up
under the hood. You've got about three hookups. These, of course, go to the module here.
This runs through a rubber gromit in the firewall up into the cab.
And finally these wires
connect to the Pyro
Meer probe that goes down in your exhaust manifold and of course, this monitors temperature.
Now, I'm gonna hook these up. We're gonna take a break, but when we come back,
we're gonna put in the exhaust system, We're gonna fire this up
and we're gonna go pull something.
Welcome back today. We're taking a 2004 Chevy
Duramax Diesel Dooley
and turning it into a pulling machine. That's right.
We want a rig that will easily pull a heavy trailer down the interstate pass, whatever gets in its way, even going up hills. I've got my buddy smokes helping me out.
At least he's supposed to be.
Now, the things we've done so far have been very simple, put on an air intake, put on a performance module, power programmer and even some gauges. Now
it's time
to open up the exhaust on this thing, which means I need to get this in the air and I finally get to cut on something.
Now, Sawzall
is the best tool to use on pipe this big because it is so quick and so accurate and cutting the pipe,
it's gonna make it come out a lot quicker.
He smokes
the kit we're gonna be using is the bully dog four inch rapid flow cat back exhaust system. Now, it comes with 304 stainless steel pipe,
all the clamps and hardware to put it in place.
Then you have a big polished flow through muffler
and finally bringing up the tail end is a polished tip.
Now, these pipes are all pre bent, ready to go right in place of the system we just took out of there.
Ok. One area that can become a weak link when you're building power in a diesel is the automatic transmission, especially if you're gonna be towing and hauling.
That's all right because bully dog has this shift enhancer kit to take care of that.
Now, the good news is
that is all there is to it.
The bad news is
you have to go inside the transmission to install it.
Now, wait, wait, wait,
I know a lot of you are deathly afraid of the inside of an automatic transmission. It's like opening up a brain. It's not that difficult.
And this is very simple. Come on, I'm gonna show you
first drain the tranny
and then remove the pan and the oil filter,
then
unbolt the valve body and remove it.
Now we'll take off this small tube and plate
followed by this other plate that holds the solenoids in place.
Then we'll pop out the solenoids
and finally carefully separate the two halves of the valve body.
Ok. Still with me. Good because this is what it's all about. That's what we're after,
these are your stock pressure valves and springs that go in these cylinders
behind the solenoids that we just removed. Now, what we're gonna do is replace those stocks, pressure valves and springs
with the new bully dog pressure valves and springs. Now, these will do two different things.
They'll give us a much quicker shifts and more pressure on the clutches, which means less slippage. So all you gotta do is slide them in place and you are ready to move on.
Finally drill out the two holes in the separator plate
and put it all back together.
See, wasn't that bad.
Now comes the moment of truth. Just what kind of difference did all this stuff really make? Yeah,
now it's time to take it out and see what she's got.
Oh, no, no, you're not driving. You just sat around, you get over to your spot.
All right, we've been talking about towing something. Well,
let's go tow something truck style.
Uh,
now
look at that. That is right at 100 and 30,000 pounds with a pickup.
Now, I know you think I'm gonna say, don't try this at home. No, I want you to try this at home with your dad's truck,
but just make sure you make a trip to bully dog first.
That's awesome.
You know, we're always talking about big rigs, the engines, the drive systems, how they're put together,
but what's their real purpose
that
it's to tow things, big, heavy things for mile after mile down the road.
But what is this thing? How does it work? Single hole in the center? How does that handle? A big old trailer?

This is 1/5 wheel. Um It pulls the load down the highway and without it, we're not gonna make any money and that's what it's all about. It is. All right, let's go into the design of it. You got the ramps here, obviously, you back on the trailer, trailer comes up, pin goes down in the jaws and loads up. Tell me about those jaws again, we got, they usually spread just a little bit further apart. But again, one pin on the trailer as we back into it,
you're gonna hear a pretty good little clicking back there when she snaps shut. Know that we're know that we're completely locked in. This is gonna come all the way to the front. So one pin
in
those jaws pulls the whole load. Sure does.
So how prone is that? To going back. It sure will. When we're talking about moving back and forth, that much weight, back and forth, the braking, the acceleration and all that, we're gonna get some wear. So once in a while the trailer might pass the truck, we hope not.
All right, that's how it hooks up. How does it release
what it does? We've got, got this handle over here and of course, we take the load off of the fifth wheel with the dollies on the trailer and we just take hold of this handle and give her a jerk. Pops the, yeah,
you will, you're gonna hear a little bit of that.
That's gonna come forward and, and we can get out from underneath the trailer.
I noticed that you've got some gears here down on the side.
What does that do? What this actually does is we've got this air cylinder down here which opens these blocks, pushes them out away from these teeth. Once we've
done that now, we can move this fifth wheel back and forth. So you can adjust the fifth wheel. Yes, we can. It's adjusted by
air. Exactly. It's, it's opening it out.
The actual tractor moves it back and forth because we're attached to the trailer. Now, we can move this back and forth with a tractor. Now, why would a driver want to do that? What we want to do is shift the load at times? We, we don't have a position just Exactly right. And we may have too much on the front axle and we want to put more back on the duals or too much back on the duals. And we want to, we may want to push that a little bit more forward so we can move it, distribute the weight where we want it.
Now. A lot of times running down the road, you see people with a bunch of grease smeared all over this thing. What's the deal?
You can do that? A lot of lubrication is what we need to see
me.
Yeah, it does.
Yeah. Just kind of tearing this thing up a little bit. We've got to have that. It's easier steering. All right. Unless it's thickened,
we've got to have it lubricated. So if the engine is the heart of the big rig,
this is what it's all about, isn't it? It sure is. If we don't have this, we're not gonna make any money.
That is how it works.
If you're working on a full size Jeep wagon, Ear Cherokee or J series
style pickup.
Well, you know that most of those came with an A MC V8 engine. That's good
and very restrictive exhaust manifolds. That's bad.
Well, Edel Bron got sick of that and came out with the shorty style headers for the AM CV eights. Take a look at this.
They've got nice thick fangs.
So you don't get any kind of warping here or down at the collector
you have smooth free flowing bins to get that exhaust gas out of there.
And of course, everything is coated in a nice high temperature coating. So these will look good for a long time.
One last thing
they are emissions approved in all 50 states. So, if you have decided it is time to whip that old A MC into shape
